Who said turn-base games is dead? Who said Over world maps are gone? Who said we can't have a high tech photo realism jrpg game with traditional rpg mechanics? These are the companies i aim to support, their innovation and creativity is just on a different level. I hope this is the future for jrpgs.
It is odd for some companies to say things like that especially these days, when success fills each of those sentences. The reality is that the cost of production is so high that they are afraid of changing anything that's not known to be the hottest hitters. We got BG3 but rarely do we ever see a turn-based GOTY. Its interesting to say the least.
Who said turn based games are dead? A small but loud sect of JRPG fans, especially FF fans, for the last ten years and ONLY them and its annoying as fuck because we have had an never ending flow of turn based games beyond the two FF games that went action instead. Its never been dead, FF just has a chunk of annoying fans who can't let go of only TWO frickin games NOT being turn based 🙄
I think your miss interpreting what I’m stating here. It’s not that turn-based mechanics are dead, rather its the refusal for a company to provide AAA production with photo realism graphics blended with turn-based. Sure, we have games like persona, Dragon quest, tales of series, but these are all visually a different style and design that take less productions costs to make and less about the approach of realism. Its that companies shy away to much from very high production well incorporating turn-based mechanics. This game took that entire philosophy and turned it on its head by blending modern tech with classical rooted mechanics to create a very distinct and unique experience. If there is any company that deserves the best game for innovation at this years game awards, it is for sure Expedition 33

Weil it is true that Atlus makes turn based games with success but both Metaphor and Expedition 33 shake the Industrie and even Square Enix a bit up and that was needed ! Square needs to see that a turn based Final Fantasy can still win Goty if they try hard enough !
I am SO happy that this game is being made. I want to play a dark fantasy game without having to play a Soulslike. Not to mention it's turn-based, so I'm totally on board.
My hype for this game is immeasurable! It is my number 1 anticipated game for this year for sure! I'm hoping I get into the beta test because this is the kind of game that I have been waiting for The game timed mechanics remind me of Legend of Dragoon and even the Paper Mario games. The Story is very compelling and has an interesting concept. The art direction of this game is absolutely stunning! I also love that one of the characters is voiced by Jennifer English who voiced Shadowheart in Baldur's Gate 3. I'm hoping that this game ends up doing really well and I am looking forward to its release.
The gigantic blimp like character world traversal is absolutely brilliant. If it’s executed right, this will be a concept by many games copy like paraglide traversal was copied from breath of the wild.
The interactions required during combat are very ShadowHearts, but even that series didn't have you actively defending. Very excited about this. (And about Penny Blood if it ever gets a publisher.)

Plenty of games released in the last few years that will scratch that itch, unless you’re looking for a “jrpg” which this is objectively not. It’s a tuned based rpg. Lies of p, ff7 remake/rebirth, disco Elysium..I can go on and on.

Never been anything like this before, I do get Legend of Dragoon vibes but the graphics in this one sets it apart from anything I have seen. i really hope the Expedition 33 game has treasure chests you can open to get items and certain weapons as well like in other turn based rpg games also i saw at the end that this game is coming to PS5 as well which i am really happy about as it is one game that i have been wanting to play since it got announced
I am very interested in this, especially because The Legend of Dragoon was my most-played PS game. i really miss that timed-button attack system and home this one works well.
I'm sad I thought Rebirth was going to be the game that brought back and innovated the world map into a new class-leading feature, in a segment littered with open world games that are actually very small in scale but too big for game play purposes Rebirth didn't do that instead just made another "open world" game. What they call a continent is but a small island in true scale. When you played the OG ff7, you had this sense that the world was huge... And now this studio has taken that idea and did something with it. I'm really excited. Whether it is good we'll see, but I just thought SE lost an opportunity there to once again be the industry leader to bring something bold and new to the table...

I've heard a lot of praise, however I'd like to take a more nuanced approach. The game's presentation gave me an initial reaction similar to the PS5 console design; little over there and too bombastic. Character design gives me a sense of generic "Unreal Engine" vibe but not necessarily bad if the acting fits. Now the good bits, I'm still looking forward to its release since I'm a big fan of turn based and Legend of Dragoon gameplay. Hopefully the music will keep on giving and feel very adventurous, fantastical and mysterious. I would also like to see some environmental variations, more than what we've seen so far. That they won't be stuck in the same abstract looking place for the whole game.
I hate to be a downer because I really hope the game is good, but I agree with you. To me it’s cluttered and lacking cohesion and my eyes don’t know where to look. It’s like an overly prompted AI painting. But who knows, maybe once I’m actually in the game and viewing it at my own pace and getting immersed I’ll feel differently.

Square Enix reacts to this by announcing FFVI Remake is in development and will be turn-based, because "Final Fantasy is all about innovation and trying new things. Action combat was a nice solution for the limitations of the time, but a bit old fashioned for today's audience. We now have the technology to feature strategic, group-based battles where the player can command all characters in the group seamlessly." All the people who only played XV, XVI, and VII Remake are throwing a tantrum online, calling it a betrayal and Square Enix is "throwing its fanbase under the bus."
Looks pretty cool. Almost looks like a ff13 remaster with turn based parry mechanics though. Hope it’s not a hallway simulator, but it most likely will be with “zones”. Honestly don’t understand why devs don’t make more 2d “jrpgs”. It’s like the metriodvania genre. Make them and people will buy. Trying to make a 3d turn based game should be left to Atlus.

Never liked turn based where positioning doesn't matter. So three characters and menu surfing while number float up is supremely dull. However FF fans have thier thing I have games like BG3 and X com. Positioning that's fun for me .
