  • It's the night before Ian Harford and Steve Wild's epic trip. Ian is going through all the carefully selected essential hunting equipment he will taking into the Alaskan wilderness.
Welcome to Hunting in Alaska - Episode Two.
Previously we spent the day with Ian and Steve in Wales and they practiced their long range shooting skills with the help of Andrew Venables of WMS Firearms Training. (Click here to watch now - • Hunting in Alaska: Lon... )
The weather can be very unpredictable on the mountains of Alaska, the temperature can change suddenly and without warning.
It may look like a lot of gear that needs to fit into one rucksack. But, considering the conditions and terrain, the focus on a hunting clothing system based upon multiple layers that is waterproof and lightweight.
Every piece of equipment has been carefully chosen for it’s specific function and only essential items will be taken on the trip as everything must be carried into the wild.
Next time, the Alaska hunting adventure begins.

Excellent! I have lived and hunted in Alaska for 28 years. If your flying in with a bush plane (super cub), typically transporters have a 50 pound limit (excluding your rifle) or you will have to pay for an extra trip to get all your gear in. One item that I recommend is a lightweight tarp to sit under in the rain while glassing, as a wind break while glassing, and to keep the quarters clean while butchering.
    Expect cold, windy, wet weather.
Expect biting insects (mosquitoes and white sox)
Expect big country....lots of glassing instead of lots of hiking.
Expect grizzly bear at any instant.
Expect long delays in bush plane take out/pick up.

Hope all base layers and underclothing are made of wool. Just can't beat great heat retention even when wet. Any woodsman with respect for themselves and the elements would use wool.

First of all: Good luck :)
A question about the solar panels: Do they work well? I mean have use them before and can we trust them? In the hurry to see the next vid.

Ian and Steve, question for you guys on kitting out.
My friend and I want to go to AK, the problem is we're both pretty big fellas - I'm 2M tall and just south of 110 kg. He's a bit shorter, but just north of 120kg. Sure seems like for a typical bush plane, there won't be hardly anything else we can pack in. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to approach this, or just start asking around with the outfitters when it's time to make the booking?
We're both 50 and could stand to lose a little weight, but that might give us an extra 10-15kg of gear at most. For a 10-day hunt, that doesn't get us much.

You are not going to make the 50lb weight limit on the charter flight, just saying!

Lol, holy gear queer. That is a ridiculous amount of gear to take to the Alaska backcountry.

DUDE, the advertising is what counts.
If someone payed him to include a drag outfit, he would seriously stuff it in the plane, wear it on a Grizzly hunt and load it with praise.
