A wonderful explanation to my fumbling about with a fluke with it’s safety off. These unearthed cpcs can be tricky to pin down, especially when you’re a “bathroom fitter” shooting from the hip. It only highlights the importance of inspection and testing. I’ve seen too much class 1 equipment connected to what looks like the cpc, only for that to be going nowhere. Testing would show this. However, this is the last thing on the mind of an instawife as she gives the 4 LAP downlights from Screwfix to the poo pipe fixers, redesigning her shower room. I used to work in an office in a 132/33kV substation - everything is a phantom earth there! People working on 33kV switches etc. always had to earth the 3 bus bars even if isolated due to coupling that could be 1000s volts at several amps. Best fireworks display was when they reenergised the system without removing the temporary earth leads - cm diameter copper cables turned into fireworks of sparkling molten metal! The windows had protective film but the salesman who was visiting dived under my desk!
Did you get free light from flourescent fittings, just using a unshielded power cable, and connecting to the fitting only, and then the other side to ground. Some farmers, with a 132kV power line running along the fence, cut the one strand at the top, put in an insulator so 100m was floating, and ran a wire to the shed, where the voltage provided lighting inside, the wire to one end of the tube, and the other to a ground stake.
Great entertaining and informative video. Having moved into a house whose former owner's son was a "theatre electrician" (whatever that is). We acquired some crazy electrics, kitchen wired with undersized cables, bedroom wall lights fed from ring main without being fused down, etc. etc. Everything now has been checked out and documented by a qualified electrician That said I am a former electronics engineer (so understand measurement impedence), not sure that we are any better than electrical engineers though ;-)

I had an electrified radiator fault. That ended up being being a switch live must have been caught by a steel in the loft top floor, which when the landing light was on the entire earth system all the way back to the mains so 230v on every tap shower head and radiator, but was also at the incomer so no rcds tripping either. Was a real head scratcher of an afternoon fault, by a wireless switch soon sorted that bugger out. Great video, as usual.
A few years ago at a summer house, we suddenly started getting a zing if touching the hob and the stainless steel kitchen bench at the same time. Turns out the hob was connected to a separate grounding system based on an earth rod, while the stainless steel kitchen bench was using the all metal water main pipe as it's ground. The voltage potential was caused by an earth fault in the water heater, and exposed by the difference. The situation was rectified by connecting the earthing systems and replacing the water heater.
This were a good-un, Davey. Had me in tears laughing, albeit serious laughter. MY method of "voltage safety-ing" is to disconnect the circuit completely. Yes, I can, and yes, I do. Yes,, once you've been zapped, you take measures to prevent reoccurrence!! OMG! So many lights, so many switches, I just want to go around and push them all! But, I can't, cos I'd proper get done. Ok so I don't fully understand all the ElectroBabble BUT I do understand the problem. I used to suffer mild zings from time to time while leaning over leccy goods to switch off the wall socket and catching my wrist on the metal edge of the DVD player with a loud BAS....! When I did the outside sockets I drove a 4 foot Earth rod into the ground and slotted trunking over it and wired into a weather proof box junction at the back of the (small) garden next to the last socket, and yes at least 5 meters from any neighbours properties, which led all the way back to the main fuse board about 15 meters away (through round trunking way above ground level and partly down a covered passage to the front of the house) and that Earth point from wherever it goes in the floor+the distributer Earth on that black block thing with big wires in it. Needless to say, no more zings, no more ghostly LED lamps not knowing if they're on or off so I must have done something right, I guess. Please don't cringe, I made sure I RCD'd and Fused the sockets on their own fuse box and they are the proper outdoor ones with covered, click down lids. Still work, still not dead. Besides they aren't ever used unless I need to use the hedge strimmer on my small 70's bush then they are disconnected the rest of the time LOL If a serious Earth leak fault occurs I hope it zaps that big fat moggy that keeps sneaking onto my garden and taking a dump in the middle of the path!
Chrome cover switch versus white switch, the chrome switch was on sale, and 50p cheaper over the white one, so Joe householder, wanting to get this "HoneyDoo" off the list, and save the 50p to contribute to getting a full six pack of canoe booze (close to water, and going to get your parts wet and smelly), instead of a single. After a few tingles the other party called a sparky, because she was tired of this being the only spark in her life....
According to my voltage indicators the whole house is live, bricks plaster the lot. Try to measure to company ground and there is nothing measure to an outside ground and there is around 90 volts measure with any of my DVM's, I have about twenty. Measured with my 1970's AVO and there is nothing. This seem to be down to having earth leakage detectors and far to many wall warts with class Y caps in them, the capacitors leak voltage onto the earth line and the earth leakage devices act as a resistor, they have to in order to detect 30mA or less. I called in an electrician and he swapped the house earth rod for the company one at the pole which is next to the house as we are at the end of the line, it made a bit of difference but not a lot. By the way I do have some electrical knowledge as I am a licenced radio amature and well versed in tracking down ghost voltages.
I got a reasonably good belt in a fire station a while back, their paging transmitter was in an IT rack that seemed to only be grounded via the coax shield to the antenna. (bonded to the lightning conductors). Scarily the young electrician they called out was clueless, had to quickly show him with my Fluke that the entire rack was at 100v or so relative to the earth pin of a nearby socket. Visibly there was a lot of bonding, to cable trays etc, but rather than find the actual fault he just ran another ground. These floating grounds and mains filters have got me a few times....

Father in law (recently passed away at nearly 100) always said that he used an indicator lamp as a positive test for power at the circuit and disparaged those old neon glow screwdrivers for the false leakage potential when (good old days) he was checking for dead/off circuits. The leakage problem is in many ways getting worse because of electronics that need/require EMI/RFI circuits with their X and Y capacitors throwing leakage everywhere. Always worth getting the big picture when you get 'stupid' counter intuitive regulations and 'fault' indications.

This is the trouble with people with a bit of knowledge, they treat earthing as an optional extra simply because things still work without an earth connection. My late father once moved a socket but didn't bother to connect the earth to the back box. I found it when inspecting and rectifying his numerous electrical bodges after he passed away.

I had the same thing where someone was getting a belt from the dishwasher and the kitchen sink. Back in the days of the 15th when we bonded kitchen sinks the kitchen appliance fitter didn't connect the earth properly and it had fallen out of the flex outlet behind the dishwasher

Thank you for the explanation. As a matter of interest, why should we be using voltage indicators. What’s wrong with using my Fluke 116 multimeter, so long as I know what I’m doing with it? If I ever suspect ghost voltage, I just switch to low input impedance
Nothing is wrong with using a multimeter so long as you know how you're using that multimeter. As I said in this video, I use the CA757 multimeter as my go-to. The requirement for a voltage indicator is to satisfy any inspection where, under examination, an inspector might be concerned you don't fully know what you're doing. In my NICEIC assessments, I always use my TIS859 because it has non-removable GS38 ends - but I don't use that out on the job. It's the difference between knowledge of what you're doing over copying the steps of what you've seen. It's easier for an assessor to tick the checkbox of copying over inside knowledge.
Things like that USB charger are potential problems as sometimes they are not properly isolated out either. And it's not just the UK market. Those sockets can have the inferior schuko (starting flame war.....) instead, which may have the same potential problem as that. And the trusty transit looks like it's due to be come the mot testers tin worm favourite before too long :(
That charger is ridiculous. Blows me away that people buy that crap, but they do. Headsup to that popular online sales place that doesn't do a thing about any of it, no matter who reports it to them. This problem is all around the world. Unless governments intervene - and why would they, governments are lazy AF - and probably enjoy the free stuff and kickbacks - it's going to get worse and more dangerous. I a couple of week ago decided I’d put me some smart switches in. I opened the switch plate at the bottom of my stairs. And every wire was red. Red common red live and red earth etc some more investigation they had used some block connectors to extend wires. And though fuck it use all the same colours cause it’s pretty. The joys and cowboys.
The CPC should have been green/yellow but all other cores were right to be red. Back in the day you could get twin-red T&E, these days you can get twin-brown for switching. As all cores in a basic switch drop are live (either permanent or switched), then all-brown (or all-red pre-harmonisation in 2005) would be correct. Most installers don't bother though because they don't want to keep additional reels on the van, so easier to use standard T&E and, if not too lazy, oversleeve one core at the point of termination.

Do I spot a Robin KTS1630 multi-function meter there? I used to be a Robin fan-boy, until I bought one of those and, after months of fighting with them over faults with it, I swore I'd never touch Robin again - then they got bought out by Fluke, so clearly my boycott was the reason they were shut down.
Indeed, the rare 1630 got a video of its own last year - "Grandad Gear with Virtua Nige". I quite like it, although I couldn't use it out in the world. All that lead-swapping would do my noggin in!
That tech bean usb power outlet wasnt designed by anybody competent. The only good bit probally was the usb circuitry they bought in. at it was electrically isolated enough to not to flash over and blow the rcd when switched on. but just looking at it from my perpspective why do you need switches and led indicators. all the connectors are soldered on. the wires are red and black. there seems no though went into protecting the high voltage led indicator circuit from the low voltage 5v which when your prouduct is going to be made in some factory by people who dont give a shit. really needs to be considered. but overlooking all this if it was tested at all with a production tester this fault would of been picked up. so it boils down to poor design, poor construction, minimal qualiy control, lack of due dilligence on the importer and distrubtor ie amazon.
If anything close to a 3kW load was connected to a socket, the switch and thin metal contacts in the socket would get very hot. Also the risk of shock due to poor contruction as shown in the video, and any of those wires tacked on by solder could easily break off.

Delroy clearly replaced that light switch for a white one, because it will do.
In James' case, it was the metal switch at fault. So Delroy presumably worked on that one.

I had the same thing where someone was getting a belt from the dishwasher and the kitchen sink. Back in the days of the 15th when we bonded kitchen sinks the kitchen appliance fitter didn't connect the earth properly and it had fallen out of the flex outlet behind the dishwasher

As a matter of interest, why should we be using voltage indicators. What’s wrong with using my Fluke 116 multimeter, so long as I know what I’m doing with it? If I ever suspect ghost voltage, I just switch to low input impedance
Nothing is wrong with using a multimeter so long as you know how you're using that multimeter. As I said in this video, I use the CA757 multimeter as my go-to. The requirement for a voltage indicator is to satisfy any inspection where, under examination, an inspector might be concerned you don't fully know what you're doing. In my NICEIC assessments, I always use my TIS859 because it has non-removable GS38 ends - but I don't use that out on the job. It's the difference between knowledge of what you're doing over copying the steps of what you've seen. It's easier for an assessor to tick the checkbox of copying over inside knowledge.

Things like that USB charger are potential problems as sometimes they are not properly isolated out either. And it's not just the UK market. Those sockets can have the inferior schuko (starting flame war.....) instead, which may have the same potential problem as that. And the trusty transit looks like it's due to be come the mot testers tin worm favourite before too long :(

That charger is ridiculous. Blows me away that people buy that crap, but they do. Headsup to that popular online sales place that doesn't do a thing about any of it, no matter who reports it to them. I a couple of week ago decided I’d put me some smart switches in. I opened the switch plate at the bottom of my stairs.
And every wire was red. Red common red live and red earth etc some more investigation they had used some block connectors to extend wires.
And though fuck it use all the same colours cause it’s pretty.

The CPC should have been green/yellow but all other cores were right to be red. Back in the day you could get twin-red T&E, these days you can get twin-brown for switching. As all cores in a basic switch drop are live (either permanent or switched), then all-brown (or all-red pre-harmonisation in 2005) would be correct. Most installers don't bother though because they don't want to keep additional reels on the van, so easier to use standard T&E and, if not too lazy, oversleeve one core at the point of termination.

Do I spot a Robin KTS1630 multi-function meter there? I used to be a Robin fan-boy, until I bought one of those and, after months of fighting with them over faults with it, I swore I'd never touch Robin again - then they got bought out by Fluke, so clearly my boycott was the reason they were shut down.
Indeed, the rare 1630 got a video of its own last year - "Grandad Gear with Virtua Nige". I quite like it, although I couldn't use it out in the world. All that lead-swapping would do my noggin in!

That tech bean usb power outlet wasnt designed by anybody competent. The only good bit probally was the usb circuitry they bought in. at it was electrically isolated enough to not to flash over and blow the rcd when switched on. but just looking at it from my perpspective why do you need switches and led indicators. all the connectors are soldered on. the wires are red and black. there seems no though went into protecting the high voltage led indicator circuit from the low voltage 5v which when your prouduct is going to be made in some factory by people who dont give a shit. really needs to be considered. but overlooking all this if it was tested at all with a production tester this fault would of been picked up. so it boils down to poor design, poor construction, minimal qualiy control, lack of due dilligence on the importer and distrubtor ie amazon.
If anything close to a 3kW load was connected to a socket, the switch and thin metal contacts in the socket would get very hot. Also the risk of shock due to poor contruction as shown in the video, and any of those wires tacked on by solder could easily break off.
