Thanks for your content. I'm a big cold steel fan boy but all of my knives are from last century, American made out of Carbon V steel. I have serious doubts that the newer knives are better, if as good as the originals. Would love somebody to do comparisons of original Carbon V blades vs the San Mai or CPM 3V.... are you that guy? ;)

In my subjective opinion 3V is the ideal knife steel. It is hard, and tough, but not to the point that it can not be sharpened with diamond stones. In addition it is stain resistant, but not stainless.
Yes it is a PITA to work with but the finished product is great.
This is why I think more 3V knives are a good thing.

🤮.... I've spent many years of my life with so many knives. From budget to custom level expensive...well, at least for me. I'm talking upwards of $600 blades.... 😳 (young Marine with my first real expendable cash)
Sold them all. End of the day, older I get, all I want is some lowly, cheap 1095, 5160, etc that is expertly heat treated and I can use and beat on for the rest of my life without fail.
I don't give a hoot anymore about these "Super steels." Just give me a solidly forged blade in a cheap and reliable steel. Don't care about rust and upkeep. Easy field sharpening. Not overly expensive. I'm a happy camper.
I've been feeding my Nepalese made khukuri addiction lately. Cheap 5160 spring steel. Differentially heat treated. Convex edges. Hand forged by master blade smiths. A lifetime of chopping and thumping where the handle will wear out long before the blade. Just make a new handle and off to the field again.

0.30" is just under 5/16" and just over 7.5mm, which is consistent with at least the very old Recon Scout in Carbon V (~1095 CroVan).

The more I look at that the more oddly familiar it looked, mainly in the blade, the way the satin finish came out, the 'not sharpened' false edge that's sharp as an ax, the more it reminds me of the Spyderco Darn Dao. Like they were done in the same shop!
And now I'm sad my Darn Dao isn't in 3V, because that would be ideal for it

The overgrind is even more intense on my 3v trailmaster. Its something I usually cannot live with, but on these, they are so heavy to begin with that a smaller knife isn't so bad. This might also mean that the blade is narrower and shorter than its supposed to be if its overground consistently all the way around

$300+ for any rubber-handled knife from anyone is a big fat “No” for me. The rubber handles wear, melt, get cut or otherwise damaged AND they’re not easily replaced like a regular slab style.
Dont get me wrong, I love CS blades at the sub-$150 price range (my 3v SRK for example).. they’re hard working knives that are tossed in the bottom of a toolbox when the handle is completely shagged… but any $300+ knife should have heirloom potential, and this one doesn’t with its irreplaceable handle.
In this category and style, look to the ZT 0006

I’ve carried a knife since I was eight years old. That was 1967. Been collecting, and using knives (fixed blades) since 1977.
I had a Recon Scout in 2004 and loved it. Gave it to a friend of mine when she got married, but haven’t replaced it yet.
Perhaps it’s too late now. I don’t remember it being that thick, maybe 3/16ths.
In my humble opinion, 0.3 inches is too thick. It is completely unnecessary. One quarter inch is pushing it, although my favorite knife of all time is 1/4 inch thick (TOPS Armageddon).
3/8ths is plenty strong enough for anything you need to do with a knife.
I suppose the full flat grind helps keep it from being too unwieldy (is that even a word? lol)

I have a Trail Master, and looking at that knife, and listening to your comments about it, I must say I'm disappointed about that knife.
The fit & finish is not even close to that of my TM!
Where is that blade actually manufactured? I don't recall your mentioning that.
My TM is the San Mai III version made in Japan.

Their prices are way too proud these days. I was able to find a lightly used carbon recon scout on ebay last year but they are very hard to find and command a high price now. Cold Steel, or whoever owns the company now, should realize they would sell a lot more of these if they didn't price them at $300+ and came out with good versions priced similarly to their SRK line.

The thickness should definitely help in chopping, and “batoning”. I like sledges for aesthetic design, and balance, and even back cutting when sharpened. However it might be better with a flat spine, for “batoning.” Back in late ‘80s I was going to replace a SRK handle, with a wood one, lo and behold, an F.g Rat tail tang. The same year I experienced my Recon Scout braking at the blade/tang area. POS design and possibly forging! As much as I have enjoyed many CS knives and accessories, I have to speak to my Falkniven A1 being fantastic. A definite step up in every way. After decades of CS knives. I don’t think I’ll buy another. You can tell the the generation of these knives by the sheath. I never did check out the tang on my First Edition Tanto Sanmai, (with brass guard and brass end cap.) I had it since 1980 and eventually sold it to a buddy. I still use my CS Recon Tanto though. I have abused it as much as any other knife I have had in the field but for some reason it’s still going strong, take a beautiful hair shaving edge and still secure in my old/cracked “leather sheath.”

THANK YOU!!!! Often, I will be watching a review and, halfway through, the reviewer will mention how great the "Secure X" sheath is. At that point, everything else they said becomes sus because - Water is wet, women lie, and Cold Steel sheaths are dog shit. These are just basic truths we all KNOW. I really like CS fixed blades. The Recon Scout in 3V will most likely be my next (sucker for Old West Nostalgia). I appreciate you showing the grind "oops" which - that knife is too expensive to be ok with that, he should have asked for a replacement. A Warcraft? Sure, wtvr. Once you near the 300 mark, expectations need to be met. And THANK YOU for not trying to go ez on CS about their ridiculous sheaths. They're as BUNK as Glock's plastic sights 👎 Good honest video!

You showed us a sheath and told us you were going to talk about it in another video. You made two more videos and neither of them are about the sheath. You said it’s over the top- but that just seems to be click bait as you don’t say why. It’s 1/3 “ much like the trail master and other cold steel bowies. So, I am doubtful that I will watch again. I’ll look for some information elsewhere. This was pretty much a waste of time.

    • @CrazySharp
      @CrazySharp  Год назад

So this is a first impressions video… I have not filmed the other videos yet. I don’t know if you know how this works but that’s typically the way I do stuff on my channel. I get the knife and I do unboxing and first impressions… Then there is a use period where then I review the Knife.

    • @CrazySharp

You seem quite impatient when I specifically say in the video that I have to speak to the owner of the Knife to find out how much actual use I can do for a review. • @CrazySharp

And as far as why it’s over the top… It’s .3 inches of 3V steal the entire intro of the video was tongue in cheek I refer to it as a bumper off of a Buick. So basically what I’m reading here is that you didn’t watch the video
