I can't even!!! This is so aesthetic!!! Love the teacup and saucer, the hair and makeup, the 50s theme, and what threw me over the edge with the loveliness of this vid is The Nutcracker music in the background!

I believes this selection is Tchaikovsky’s “Waltz of the Flowers” from “The Nutcracker Suite.” I think it’s a great song to show off fine typewriters.

@@johntapp7232 I'm a huge fan of the nutcracker suite, any time of year! It's so pleasant and whimsical, and pairs nicely with vintage items too!

Royal typewriters have always been a top favorite of mine. I have had everything from a 1949 Royal Arrow portable to a 1957 Royal Electric RE upright. I still have both-with a fleet of other Royal machines. I have been a collector of old Typewriters for 40 years and have seen many many interesting examples.

I don't collect typewriters, instead I'm more into vintage television sets. However, people kept hearing I was into antiques and people just kept giving them to me. Now I have like, 7. My favorite one is a 1953 royal typewriter (almost identical to the one at 3:36) that my dad found in a backroom at his workplace during a clean out back in the 1990s. When I was about 6, my sister (also 6) tried to pick it up. The thing weighed about 50 pounds and she dropped it right on the lid and broke the close latch, bent the key cover door and broke the "A" key (it just remained depressed at all times). I would love to use this thing but my first name alone has 2 "A's" in it so unless I want to use the @ key instead it's pretty unusable. It's been 15 years since then and I still don't know how to fix it, although I all honesty I've never really tried.

FYI: from a very old retired typewriter mechanic-- the type font in 10 pitch is called Pica (pie-ka), not (pee-ka).

The Royaluxe (along with the Century) is not internally a Royal A-frame like your other Royal portables at all. It's the last iteration of a German design that started with the Diana and Administrator. It's a pretty cool design, more complex and very different mechanically from the American-made Royal Portables. It is somewhat uncommon.

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  3 года назад

What makes it so different? On the outside it looks very similar to the futura to me- at least on the sides. How does it differ? I didn’t find as much about that specific machine out there as I did on the others.

So I just bought a royal aristocrat like the one you have in the center, with the red royal label. I didn't know and just bought it for $50 but it doesn't have the entire back piece yours has where the paper rests. Everything else works on the typewriter just not sure if it was still worth the money. I'm new to this whole typewriter thing.

50$ for a fully functional typewriter in good condition is a good price! Pieces can be replaced- you might want to try joining the antique typewriter collectors group on facebook! It's a great place to help connect with other collectors and find missing parts!

The tea cup on the edge of the typewriter was nerve racking. I was waiting for it spill into the keyboard of the typewriter. But thanks for this. Very informative. I'm considering a Royal typewriter, but I do not know if they are worth it. I do not collect. I want a typewriter to work with. I also looked at those new Royals. I was not impressed.

I would personally encourage a desk model machine fi you intend to use it daily. If you want a more portable machine, I personally love Smith Coronas in the 5 series (1950s-60s). Collectors also really like German designed machines- Adler, Olympia, Hermes. All of those machines seem to hold up well

There is a seller near me with Royal Aristocrat but all the keys letters are rubbed off and he wants $90. 😖 I wish people sold their typewriters here locally for $25.

There is a peddler's mall here where I tried to haggle down a ROUGH LC Smith no.8 from $100 to $50. Bent return lever, missing tabulator linkages, square rollers and cracked platen. Figured it was a good winter project.
He said "I just put it out, I won't accept lowball offers right now."
Yeah, he's treating a peddler's mall like an auction or something. FB marketplace seems to be the place for low prices, though. Found multiple local typewriters for less, in better condition too.

Thanks, I now know more about typewriter Royal-ty. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.) I have a gold-plated 1953 Quiet Deluxe currently being refurbished by Gramercy Typewriter here in NYC (fingers crossed). It was allegedly once owned by a relative of Hart Crane, former poet laureate of Ohio! (Don’t worry, I never heard of him either.) Oh, and fyi, pica is “PIE-ca”, not “PEE-ca”. Not that it matters, but now you know.

I found a Royal HH Elite today at a garage sale and I am in the process of cleaning it out. It's in pretty rough shape but I think it's doable. Your videos have given me the will to continue, and it's great hearing you say that The HH Elite is a smooth and consistent machine! It makes me think the repairs are worth the effort. Thanks for the inspiration. By the way, I would name your 1963 typewriter Gemini. LOL

Did Royal do a tombstone plastic key in brown?

    • @JustMyTypewriter

On royal QDL (older ones) the keys are a brownish shade. Not as tombstone styled as the futura though

@@JustMyTypewriter Thanks Brown keys would look good on my Empress project, but seems Royal was good with green, white and the occasional gray. And looks like all the Empresses had white. Dark gray would match the platen knob and back carriage track cover. I have some gray keys on an HH that would look better with green. Hmmm.
