Neat little video essay on the 2D Metroid franchise! It's a better time than any now that Dread is coming soon, with Prime 4 still in development.
I noticed you were linking some of the more "definitive" hacks in the description. While I can't speak for Metroid 2 (which you already have two choices for, anyways), I _can_ speak for the GBA games.
For Zero Mission, I'd recommend Cosmic's Project ZM, which polishes up the game across the board with physics tweaks, fixes, etc. For Fusion, there's the original Sequence Breaking Fusion if you just want proper wall/bomb-jumping (and the sequence breaks that come with them), or there's Special Edition (it's been a passion project of mine for the past month). It uses the previously-mentioned SBF as a base and updates the visuals a bit to look less like it's an early GBA title, along with introducing many community tweaks and some reimplemented early/unused content.

I think it's because it lacks the same amount of accessibility as Mario and Zelda. Anyone can pick up one of those games, get through it quickly enough and have a blast. 2D Metroid games on the other hand are way harder, and are really just gonna appeal to a specific type of gamer. Not as many people are gonna be able to pick up a Metroid game and enjoy it as they would Mario or Zelda, even if I do think it's at the same level of quality as a franchise, if not more so.

You could basically make a whole essay on Metroid music and hardware limitations lol. IMO, because some of Metroid's best tracks are simple melodies with a breath and a pulse to set the atmosphere, and because of the musical talent and technical know-how of the music team, Metroid, M2, and ZM all have a lot of brilliance that shines through the hardware constraints. M2 especially is interesting to me with what it accomplished in it's time with it's hardware.
Anyway, good video I enjoyed it 👍

Strongly agree. Particularly with how interesting the bloops of M2's music was. I liked how SM handled the remixes. Only problem is the more time I talk about music, the high the risk of YT taking exception to it, so I had to keep it very short.

Assuming a Prime series video will come (maybe when Prime 4 actually gets any news?), I am excited to see it (hopefulyl) done justice. People only ever seem to care about Prime 1 because it's "Super Metroid but in 3D!" and Prime 3 because of its different approach to things, but to me Prime 2 will always be the best of that trilogy. It took what worked in Prime 1 while fixing most of what didn't. Backtracking is extremely streamlined, with elevators connecting each area to every single other area, beams are done MUCH better (each new beam doesn't make previous beams obsolete, because honestly, who used wave after getting ice, and who used ice after getting plasma?(outside of the few enemies that REQUIRED them). I could go on for far too long about why Metroid Prime 2 is potentially the best game in the franchise, or at least my favorite.

As a long time Metroid fan from the early 90s since my childhood days of playing Metroid on his NES, I gotta say your description of what it feels to play that opening section of NEStroid, as it is called, was marvelous. The editing with the map zooming out while the music faded and the commentary kept on going.... *chefs kiss*
I particularly want to thank you for not dismissing both NEStroid and Metroid 2 on the Gameboy. Too many have I seen and heard say: "just play the remakes, forget about the originals, they are too clunky and have aged badly" and while this isn't exactly false, since they are indeed very old games, I feel like at least trying them out once or twice is the way to go. The franchise ideas came from somewhere and it is totally worth checking out either for the franchise history reasons or because of gaming history. Thank for that little showcase.
Amazing video by the way. You've earned a new subscriber.

    • @jacobmonks3722
      @jacobmonks3722 2 года назад

I only think that way about Metroid on the NES. While the lack of a map and cryptic progression can be solved by just looking up a guide online, the fact that you start with a meager 30 energy whenever you die is the absolute worst thing about the game, and that can't be worked around. It makes the game a chore, completely sucking away any and all sense of progression.
Metroid 2 on Gameboy though is pretty good. I blasted through almost the whole game in a couple sittings, the only reason I stopped is because the closest recharge point in the end was a solid 10 minute trek, and I needed it after every Omega Metroid. So while I recommend it, I also completely understand why someone would want to skip it and just go to AM2R or Samus Returns.

A non linear sprawling labyrinth with no map (outside of buying a nintendo power guide). No save points. You died, you were given a password and brought back to square one. The stakes were high at the start and the world map at that time was ambitiously HUGE. This game preyed on your fear being lost of the unknown.

The SM Redux patch is very nice indeed after not playing the game for many years and being used to the newer games' controls. It's not perfect. Sometimes Samus gets stuck trying to land on vertically moving platforms, but there's only 1-2 places it really comes up as a minor problem. Overall it's a nice QoL update with the missile shortcut button, and auto-run especially.
I'm so excited for Dread. I'd started getting back into 2D Metroid after playing a lot of Prime 1 rando over the last year, and that has only intensified after the reveal of Dread. I've played Super, Fusion, ZM, and SR several times over the last couple months to see how quickly I could clear the games. AM2R a couple of times as well. As a child I didn't know much about Metroid. Sonic was my obsession. As I've grown older though, Metroid has usurped Sonic with its condensed quality and connected storyline. The first one I ever played was Prime 1 and the final game i completed was GB Metroid 2. Its a wonderful series and i like doing quick playthroughs of the games for friends who other wise wouldnt have played them. The series deserves more recognition and love.

I've always preferred playing through a game series as released to see how the series evolves gameplay wise rather than playing the "better versions" straight away and suffering from hindsight when going back to an earlier title (although there are obviously exceptions). I suppose it boils down to how tolerant you are to playing through older games, especially those of the NES era, but it makes the transition from Metroid 2 to Super Metroid so much more of a transcendent experience, and revisiting Metroid 1 through Zero Mission right after Fusion is a blast.
But anyway, your summary of the series so far is excellent, thumbnail game is on point, and I'm excited to see where you might branch off to next.

I recently started playing the Metroid franchise at the start of august, I played zero mission on my Wii-U and I played samus returns on 3ds… then I started super Metroid and it was definitely a great game but the floatiness and few vague spots made it quite frustrating. Like how come you can’t see where the doors are on the map, how come you can’t see what items you’ve picked up… and the random bomb spots… though this is certainly circumvented once you get the scanner. Super Metroid is revolutionary for it’s time and has been a great game so far but if I decide to replay one of the Metroid games, I’ll stick with zero mission or samus returns.

Super Metroid plays like a dream afterward. The other patches will change the map, but the "gameplay only" patch only changes the gameplay to feel more modern and responsive/fluid.

Well, you said you were thinking about doing a Metroid video, and you certainly don't disappoint!
It'd be interesting to see Lore vids from you, in the same way you do with C&C, although I don't know if you're as into Metroid as doing those kind of vids would need. Up to you I suppose, but might be fun to see. ^^
As for that final statement...well, I never bothered to play C&C4. I lost touch with the franchise post-westwood and didn't check it out again until after C&C4 had been released, so I had the benefit of the fandoms wisdom to steer me clear of it.
But I have played Other M.
