I've been building PCs for over 20-years and sometimes forget how easy it is to make this sort of mistake on your first builds. This should be a big help for beginning builders.

Just about all power supply manufacturers make a mess out of the GPU cables, they suggest you to use 2 cables but always make each one with 2 connectors on one end and you have to try to hide the plug not being used on both cables. This is fine for small cards but more power hungry cards either get extensions or look at the ugly plugs hanging down not being used

One 8pin can supply 300watts and 9V. GPUs are designed to max out the intake on 1x 6+2pin to 150watts. So one pigtail can deliver the 2x150watts easily. Cards with 200-250watts tdp are really safe to use with one pigtail if you have a decent PSU. Also mind the 75 watts that can come from the PCI-e x16 slot.
Isn't an 8 pin usually a 12V connection?
well 3070ti uses up to 290watts i think? so i just switched to two PCIe power just to be safe.
@@iCore7Gaming Same here. 350 watts on my GPU Why stress one cable with 350 watts when I can run 3 cables at 117 watts each . Making a pc last long is about the least amount of stress/HEAT as possible. Which is also why I buy power supplies that are running at around 50% or lower instead of 90+ percent. My next build which is coming soon is going to have a 1000+ watt psu
What about power spikes though like the rx 6000 series's which are apparently high enough to trip the safety shutdown?

I'm pretty sure the manual said "Standard" not "Wrong way". Big difference.
Yep, you are 100% Correct!
Ok, this may be the answer I've been looking for! I have been building PCs for over 20 years and been having an issue that has been perplexing me for a few years now. A little background...... I built a system in 2020 with a Rm850X PSU and a 5700XT GPU. Worked great, never had an issue. Then 2 years later, I upgraded the GPU to a XFX RX6900XT. I did my research, and the PSU was more than sufficient for the new graphics card. But from day one, I had issues where I have had to power on the PC several times in order for it to post. But once it posts, it's fine. I tried everything from updating the BIOS to changing PCIe and DP cables. So, I've just been living with it for the past 2 years. Call it lazy or whatever, but I couldn't find anything on Google regarding this issue. I knew it wasn't motherboard related because I never had the issue with the 5700XT. I think the problem is that I have been using one cable coming off of the PSU PCIe output. This card most definitely needs more power and subsequently, more than just one cable. It never dawned on me! That "Standard" connection in that manual is how I've been connecting my cards since GPUs required more than 1x 8pin connection. I'm going to try the "Recommended" connections and use 2x cables and see if it resolves this no posting issue on a cold boot. I will check back with the results!

Answer this ... Why would every manufacturer waste the money to add second plug if you shouldn't use it because it causes damage?
Hi! I got my information from the manual that SeaSonic provided. The second plug is great if your graphics card needs two plugs but doesn't draw a lot of power. Using one cable with two plugs looks better and neater, but if you have a high power graphics card it is better to be safe and use two separate cables like the manual recommended. :) Let me know if you have any other questions. @@UTECHPIA I personally hook all connectors to separate sources where ever possible to ensure nothing is starved for power since that will cause the components to heat up more thus shortening their life span. Thanks for sharing your expereince.
@@gripclinchcanada2238 My 3070 has only has one single 8 pin and draws only a little less than a 2080 Super. Even with a single 8 pin and OC'ing to 2100mhz the cables barely get warm. You have to remember 75w is delivered through the mobo PCIe slot and the 8 pin PCIe cable is rated to about 200w or more with bigger gauge wires.
You saved me. I've got 3 x 8 pins ! Let's go for 3 cables then
Actually the split Y cable can be used. It is well rated for the power delivered for 2 > 1 as well as the socket on the PSU side connector. It shouldn't hurt your GPU and it is tested on manufacture for its purpose. The "Standard" option does not means wrong. While the "Recommended" does not means correct. Both are correct, but depends on the usage. Also, depends on the PSU power deliver itself, if it is enough to stand your 2x 8pin GPU using a single 1 > 2 connector so it is safe enough to do it. But, if your PC Build overpass the maximum power of your PSU so the Y cable does not matter, it is wrong in essence and a higher wattage PSU with the correct power needs for your setup is needed in this case, regardless of how you are going to connect the GPU....

It shouldn't really matter for the 2070 super, since that's a sub 300w graphics card. But with the newer generation cards, 6800XT, 3080, 3080ti etc, this is great advice, since those can draw more than 300w.

whats wrong with "standard" - i mean WHY would a psu supplied cable have 8pin and 6pin on the same cable if NOT to plug into the same GPU (especially as the 8pin is a 6+2 detectable anyway)
I don’t think you will run into any problems with the “standard way”, but if you do have problems you can try to see if this tip helps. This is just the recommendation from the PSU, just passing it on to my viewers.
@@UTECHPIA ah thanks, just curious as i upgraded my psu to a 850w (from 500 as getting new card recommended minimum 650w) and the new gpu coming uses the two "sockets" so i was hoping i dont need to undo all the cables to install another whole cable lol - i'll see how it goes during some tests etc.

Exactly.

Looks like you did have it wired properly. Daisy chaining for GPUs that have one eight and one six pin should be fine. It's when it's two eight pins that you should have two separate cables. Of course, if you can have two cables, may as well.
what if it has three 8 pin connections needed for 3080ti
i also am gonna be using cable extensions, but the reason i ask is because someone had told me it’s okay to use 2 of the 8 pin connecters for a gpu that needs 3
@@asmrpoke006 It's officially recommended to use three separate cables in that case. However, it seems to, generally speaking, be fine to use two cables, one daisy chaining. I believe that I read one guy who allegedly blew his card by doing this, but it's definitely extremely rare if true.

Yes, it will totally work and probably without issues for a long time, BUT if you use one cable you will put a high load on that 12V power rail in your PSU which can lead to faster componment degradation or to "coil whine" in your PSU while putting high load on your GPU. So it is indeed a good idea to "relieve" your 12V power rails of your PSU. If you divide the load into two cables both rails are not under high load. It is even better to consult your PSU manual to find out how the 12V power rails are redistributed in you PSU and use different 12V power rails for each cable. In this way you'll put even a lower load on your PSU. It will work longer without failures.
good information bro thx
Thanks!!! Glad it was helpful, bro! 👊

I can't seem to find the answer to the question I've had since I figured this out literally today, and I've had my 3080 for several months now, but why do we need to use two PCIe cables instead of how you had it originally? Does it really make that big of a difference in performance? Also I'm using a 750 PSU, is that more than enough with a Ryzen 5 3600 or should I upgrade?
Hi Sam, if you are using a cheaper powersupply, they usually don't split up the rails very well, that's why having separate powerlines is more important. HIGH end power supplies typically can split up the rails automatically; so splitting up the powerlines isn't as important. 750W is perfectly fine for the 3600x and the 3080. Nice combo!
@@UTECHPIA Will I notice a difference in performance at all with the correct method?
@@DespinaValnir , unless you are currently have problems, you will NOT see a performance benefit. You will see more stability, again, only if you currently are having stability problems.
@@UTECHPIA It's still kind of bs to suggest you can't use a single cable, as it is actually all about the current that goes through a cable and whether or not the _cable_ is decent enough to handle that without frying. It has literally nothing to do with the rails. It's why that manual considers a single cable connection 'standard'.
I would also say that any GPU that requires _two_ cables to power, is probably a GPU you want to avoid. A single 6+2 pin connection should be more than enough juice to power even the most powerful GPUs currently on the market. That's usually a 8 pin PSU to 8 pin pci-e power connection, single cable.
@@PHeMoX Not really bs. My GPU runs at about 350 watts fully loaded, with 3 8 pin connectors. The 4000 series I'm hearing 400+ watts. Why risk it? Running 1 cable would mean I'm constantly running 30 amps through the cable. Id much rather be conscious of my cable management and run 3 cables. That way I only run 10 amps through each cable. I would assume that the manufacturer knows what amp draw the cables or power rails are rated for and should follow the recommendations.
The cable management though!! what do you do with the seperate hanging 8 pins?
Hehehe, thanks! I just used a ziptie to hang the unused 8pin cable under the 8pin cable that I was using. Did this for both cables. :)
Thank you, needed this video, I was about to make the same error👍
I just realized that I have my 2080S installed incorrectly and it was running like that for onver an year :D. How bad can that be?
just not getting the optimal amount of potential power. jayz 2cents did a video on does this actually matter.. and its eveer so slightly does. "can power cables affect gpu performance"
my rtx 4080 needs 3 cables. is it ok to use 2 cables and daisy chain/ pig tail the third? I am using a 750W Power Supply
Yep, that should be "okay". Personally, if you CAN, get a beefier power supply that has 3 cables straight from the power supply... But I did the same thing you did for my friend's 3080Ti because it also needed 3 cables, and so far so good!
My PSU doesn't have 2 independent cables. And it only has one rail. I read that with only 1 rail you don't need to use two separate cables, how correct is that? I'm having crashes while gaming and I'm thinking that is the GPU fault, any way to know if it is this issue? I don't another PSU to try.
Hi, I have a 3090 with 3 8-pin connectors. On my HX1000, there are two 8-pins on one end of the PCIe cable that comes from the power supply. If I use two cables with a total of 4 8-pin connectors, can I just leave one hanging, because I only need 3. Thanks!
Hey Spuddy, that should work. I don't recommend using only 2 pcie power cables, there is the possibility that the card may use its max wattage and if cables aren't rated for that amount of wattage, the cables may melt. I would recommended using a single cable for each 8 pin connector of your graphics card.
this was fun... thanks. I am hooking up an old Titan and this was my next big question.. however I have a 6+2 connector so am wondering where the ground (2) goes
Those pins aren't for ground. They're for PCIe outlets requiring 8-pin connectors so the same cable can work for both 6 and 8-pin slots. You can let them hang or tuck/ziptie them out of the way.
how can i see witch connector i have on my all in one gaming pc without tear down my pc ?

Can you flip the cable ? Other end is with one 8 pin conector so when you connect graphics like in this video there is those 2pin cable on the side ,and it is not looking nice
