  • Brian compares two beautiful, but very different, salmon dial calendar chronographs. On one side we have the Patek 5270p and on the other the Breitling Premier Datora. Is the difference in price justified? Who are these watches for? What aspects of collecting draw you to the hobby? These are just a few questions that we explore in the video.

I am a very proud Breitling owner and lover of horology... But this is on the level of comparing a Monet painting to a Middle School art project. However I love the video concept and the boldness to even make a comparison such as this. The more literature I read about what makes high-end watchmaking high-end watchmaking.. the more I appreciate the level that patek brings to their timepieces.

Having tried that Breitling... it's super thick, which is it's biggest deterrent. If it came with a hand wound movement and measured less than 14mm (13 would be ideal), it would be a real winner and I would buy one for sure.

I think the most frustrating thing about the breitling watch is it's so close yet they were totally within their power to make this materially closer in quality to the patek: Skip the automatic and go manual and get rid of the caseback to reduce the thickness, and make the dial more legible by making the day/month windows bigger, and the chronograph subdials smaller, just like the PP. Instead, they have a 42mm diameter 15+mm thickness benemoth of a dress watch that frankly, most people would not want to wear in any dressy occasion. Oh, and make the blue leather strap the standard strap! It's stands out with the blue accents in the dial! It's like their design team got 90% of the way there and just forgot the last few very very important details.
Would've bought the watch long time ago if it wasn't so damn thick and the windows so small.

I wear the 116660DB Deep-Sea Sea-Dweller and although it is fine you really have trouble with it around cuffs. This Breitling measures, like, 15.3? And, my Rolex measures 18 - so it is really, really not ideal for any formal occasion!

The Datora looks amazing, especially for the price point. How does its wear experience compare to a Heuer 02 Monaco in terms of thickness? I know they're totally different watches, but the Monaco is also about 15.5mm thick.

While breitling seemed to go through a strange stage of "fashion watches" but they've always been in my top 5, while the breitling is a little to thick! It 95% there and for the price it's by far much better value! Based on the dial alone I'd choose the breitling, sorry not sorry. If I could afford the PP I'd own both but probably only wear the Breitling 😬

It is difficult to keep the cost out of the equation when it comes to wearability too. Walking around with a item on your wrist that costs as much as a small house or a second hand Ferrari is great in normal places that you might go. When venturing around after hours, in a less safe place of town, in the subway, or even on the street, there is a non zero chance that you get rolled for your watch. Would you be out and about with hundreds of thousands of dollars of cash in your wallet? I think not. So even if you can afford the Patek, there will always be just a little resistance to wear it in some circumstances unless of course that you have a monstrous amount of money than you can afford to carry hundreds of thousands of dollars on the street. My point is, for most of us, a $13K watch would be a painful loss if something would happen but nowhere near the kind of loss of losing the Patek. I guess, I like middle of the road luxury for most daily activities and reserve something more special for more upscale occasions. For this reason, I think they both are highly desirable watches for what they bring. No losers here.

If money wasn't an issue, patek for sure. The size is perfect, they were able to squeeze a perpetual in that size while Breitling isn't even a perpetual and its 15.3 (thats really thick). It just says the finesse is not there for the Breitling. I like the dials on both. Machine finish i can understand because of the $, I don't expected a perpetual for this price, but I think they couldve done it in a more moderate size. Even i can make a perpetual if you gave me unlimited space but thats not what a skilled watchmaker does.

Hmm in car Terms Patek is definitely a Bugatti, instead of custom coachbuilding you're getting custom craftsmanship.
That said the Breitling dial offers the same experience as the Patek for 1/15th the price. They're both significant amounts of money but the Breitling is the price of a used car whilst Patek the price of a 1 bedroom Studio in the City... Or a 2 bedroom apartment in a little town... Unless you're a watch fanatic 2mm width & movement decorations just aren't worth that much. I LOVE watches and even I think spending more than $15-20k on a watch is lunacy unless you're so wealthy that amount is irrelevant.

I'm sorry comparing these two watches for me is to much of a reach. They aren't close other than they are both watches. The Breitling doesn't even have an in house movement which kills this at the jump. Which by the way I'm a Breitling guy and initially at its release I loved the Datora but I have up on it at its price point because of the movement and how thick it was. Nice vid however.

The Breitling movement is in house. You think there’s nearly a $200k difference between these watches? If you took the branding off most people wouldn’t even be about to discern which one is “higher quality”. Watches are 99% about brand perception.

@@robertsullivan4773 this used to be the case but has not been for several years now. Both the B01 chrono and the B25 (what is in this watch) are manufacture movements. They are not based on the Valjoux 7750 as you indicated in your comment. Moreover, the B01 is regarded by many as one of the best chronograph movements on the market today. Having in house movements has been pretty crucial to Breitling’s reformation as a world class watchmaker. A simple internet search would tell you this.

If you took off the names and showed people these two dials, the Patek would look like the unfinished alpha build. This is such a poor layout on Patek’s part. They couldn’t even align the letters on day and month or maybe it appears that way cause the size of letters vary so much between them… I’m sure there is some “heritage” explanation for bad design here.
The depth and size of the subdials as well as the two-second-search on MS word for font suggestions all make this look super cheap.
Worst part is definitely how they decided to handle numerals on the bottom half. It might have a Rolls Royce Engine but the chassis is more worthy of a Honda Civic.
High horology needs to be more than just how much time people spend polishing something. China made watches could get the technical parts down in half the time at a quarter of the cost if that’s all we were after.
