So now that I've watched Chivalry, I've figured out why Ikki decided that stripping himself was the way to atone. I'm going to assume that he walked in on his sister once, and she told him that was the proper way to apologize.

It makes a lot of sense to me. If someone saw you naked, it'd only be appropriate for them to see you naked as well. That way you're even.

Late reply but, fuck it, I'm doing it anyway.
I think it has a lot to do with your personal standards. Digi has a weird approach to anime in that he can analyse one show very in-depth and completely dismiss another for very small reasons.
He has openly stated that his favorite thing is cute girls doing cute things but with at least some degree of nuance.
As such, his standards are very, VERY different from those of most other people. Just to give an example, he considers Asuna to be a decent character when most people would agree she's extremely bland. He also thinks Log Horizon is a high 9 or 10, which honestly seems like an exaggeration.
So, even if he rates this show as "slightly above average", I'm sure there are many people who will disagree with that. Personally, I've seen some really, REALLY bad shit (Pupa) and it has made me appreciate many shows which people think are "the worst thing ever". Chivalry is a solid show; nothing unique or well polished but it is very enjoyable.

Log horizon season 1 is great because it is written with some realistic rpg dynamics, fun characters and a non traditional bland character, season 2 ok, and asuna from evangelion is a decent character and very iconic

This show is the first time I've EVER seen an action anime do this. I'm probably gonna go watch it now.
By the end of the fourth episode? I can't name any shows where the characters actually hook up in their entirety.

Yeah, i really liked the part where they don't muck around for 20+ episodes with "will they or won't they" only to give some sort of "they will but not really cause we want something for second season" bullshit conclusion.
I would give this show a solid 5-6 due to very good execution despite very generic premise. They use the tropes that are expected for this kind of anime but then they invert or deconstruct them. Also i disagree with digibro about fight choreography being bad. It's not about how well animated it is, it's about how well it can present a current situation and flow of battle to the viewer. And on this point it's quite good.
It's a show i quite enjoyed. Completely unexpectedly, also.
You could try Trigunn, even though it is only at the end of the series for quite a short time.
Also Fate/Stay Night. Then there is SAO. I wouldnt recommend more than the first season, but you've got it there.

It was infinitely better than the zombie horse trope that is, "guy tries to say he didn't see anything/apologizes while girl hits/attacks him."
I personally think one of the best is in Haganai when the MC catches a glimpse of a hot girl half naked in his shower at home and he apologizes and she's just like "accidens happen, it's not like it's a big deal and I know that you didn't do it on purpose". You know. Like, actual common sense.
Fun fact: Most guys would rather be in a solid relationship with one hot girl who loves them than of being chased by a dozen hot girls that love them and never be able to be with any of them.
Even on a wish fulfillment level Chivalry Of A Failed Knight beats Asterisk War.
(Also even some of the generic background characters in Chivalry look honestly more appealing at times than some of the main girls in Asterisk War.)

I’ve never heard a fact like that before and I’m a guy for the record. Is that even a thing guys would generally say? I mean I don’t think about making harems either but would we be generally yelling that out loud? I mean in general, like a guy would say they would care less about their hair compared to girls but that “fun fact” I never heard someone saying something like that like that and I don’t think I ever would be. As for picking one girl... you better know who your picking because if it doesn’t turn out well, you will be having to find another girl to date in the end. Because I believe in the LN, those two did almost broke up. As for harem mcs not getting together with anyone in the end, that’s because most harem anime’s never get fully adapted because I’m pretty sure a good amount of harems do have mcs picking someone.

April Jones Same here. Asterisk War’s art has pretty sharp outlines and a very bright color palette. Chivalry, on the other hand, has thinner lines and a richer, darker colors, giving it a softer look. It’s easy on the eyes. I also like the way that Stella’s full face blush slightly glows. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Stella is pretty hot.

You want to know something subtle I liked? In the first fight in Chivalry, they are in an actual arena, not out in public, and they have very few viewers. I don't know, it just was interesting because you get that Idea that the fight was sanctioned, and also that like in real life, most people wouldn't be interested in seeing a fight between some nobody and somebody already established as one of the greats. It goes along with the actually more grounded tone I get from this show, with even the Buildings and school environment being much less grandiose than is Ass Wars. It helps humanize the characters, putting them in a setting that is more like our own.

I'm genuinely surprised (in a good way) that Chivalry has an actual trans woman as a character w/ her being presented as:
1. A ""trap""
or
2. A token character w/o an interesting personality.
Alice is geniunely a charming, kind character that matters. Even some of my favorite anime haven't shown any LGBTQ representation. Wow. Ikki even mistakenly calls her a "dude", but he corrects himself and even trusts Alice for watching over Stella & his sister when he's gone.

It was generic, but at all the right places, they went the other way. While not amazing, very enjoyable
I've never seen Asterisk War, but I have seen Chivalry of a Failed Knight and it's definitely one of my favorites, because yeah, while its setup is everything we've seen before, there's a certain charm to it and it does try to be unique enough to stand out from the crowd.
I think that this show is a parody of the Asterisk War because he says "I know what you are going to say" then takes his clothes off too as if the creators of that series read Asterisk War before and wanted to parody the show while it was still going because they knew it would be bad.Strange huh?
I hope there's more Chivalry of a Failed Knight, because it definitely deserves one. I wanna see more Ikki and Stella, I wanna see them talk and interact.
David Timmer I think that a show that knows what it is and who it is trying to entertain and performs everything it can in its genre to its limit, even though it does not bring anything completely new, deserves to be celebrated.
I have to agree, i've seen this shit all the time. Just that this one did it in a very charming and amazing way. Stella.... is kinda generic but one of the best i've seen. Yes obviously there's much much better animes, but with 12 episodes how much can you actually do. This is by far one of the best or the best 12 episode anime i have watched, just hits you in the feels at the right times. Pretty much its great if you just want a happy ending and fast romance in an anime. PS needs a season 2

One thing I don't recall you mentioning, that I've noticed a lot in these videos: The lighting is so much better-looking in Chivalry than in AW.
God does it ever. Asterisk War looks like the sort of shit a commission artist would put up as an example of their flat color tier. Chivalry looks like a genuine finished product.
Also Digi never talks about the opening either. Which is a shame because Chivalry's opening is stylish as _fuck._

I totally, utterly disagree that first time having seen someone magica power is "pulling it out of ass". Especially that it is clearly stated in the anime that every knight has some magical power. that moment was one of many good points in the anime, moment in which he activates magic is the point where viewer should realise "oh wait, right, he also has magic on top of that"
That is not random power outta nowhere, its the first time we ever see him fight. And it's not a power to disappear. That is his strategy.

asterisk war s2 isn't really a second season it was announced as 24 ep with 12 then another 12 later on same with bungou stray dogs

+JrIzRightHere Mirai Nikki was already better than Ass War on the simple basis that it wasn't giving us another battle harem rom com where the MC never actually gets into a relationship with the main love interest, didn't use an animation style outside of fight scenes that felt lazy at best and just plain sloppy at its worst, and it gave us Yuno, the literal poster girl for Yandere psychopaths. She freaking terrifies me. Plus, Miari Nikki had a much more dramatic, suspenseful thriller/horror vibe going to it in that it was a Death Game where the characters murdered one another; there was a genuine threat to the main cast surviving and plot armour was not a given.
Here's the only "important" difference between the two series: Ass War has cuter girls.

This video is a goddamn journey. It has a narrative arc. For a minute there you had me believing that Chivlary is literally saving anime, then I snapped out of it and laughed at myself. You achieved immersion lmao.
It's such a shame this never got a second season because it's actually competent and thought out. Even when following the standard route anime of this genre usually takes it does it well and the reasons for it happening in-universe makes sense. And the series gets better with rewatching it too.
I think I figured why this show to me has a more eye-friendly look, it is the shadows. Asswars has almost no shadow movement and everything as a result looks unnatural and like a flash game of some kind, this one has some shadow in the colors so it is more friendly to my eyes and causes less strain.
I think I unknowingly switched from Chivalry of a Failed Knight to Asterisk War a couple episodes in, and only just now realized that such a case had happened.

@@theseus0767 it's actually pretty good, even though it might seem like it's generic (which it kinda is), the story and characters make up for that. They have an actual romance and the mc actually fails. It's better than most of the other "generic" swordplay anime.

The harem and fan service is surprisingly tame in Chivalry.

unlike Ass Wars, the fanservice actually seems to not be totally shoehorned in and to usually make some kind of sense in-universe, but still, there's a lot of it in Chivalry. It's still miles better than Ass Wars as a whole, but there's definitely a LOT of fanservice.

I think his metric is just especially high due to over-exposure. This show is an 8/10 for me and I am pretty sure it is because I am not as jaded as him about the genre.
I can still sit down and enjoy a generic harem series, I can see it's not the best but I will still enjoy it. A series like this stands well and above most others in its genre which is good enough for an 8/10 (which MAL calls "good.")

What I liked about chivalry is that it had a relationship that actually went fucking somewhere
I sat down and watched Chivalry of a Failed Knight after watching this video. I kind of liked it, despite seeing a bunch of flaws in the story. What got to me was that even though this show had a bunch of fan service at the beginning, it actually tried to tell a story with characters whose motivations you could understand, and you would like to root for.
What I found the most refreshing was the relationship between between Ikki and Stella. It would have been so easy as to make Stella be secretly in love with the male protagonist and let that run throughout the entire show, but no, they instead get together in the first act. Stella then became a secondary main protagonist and all the fan service inbetween the two main leads became justified from that point on. The underlying themes of the story kept driving the narrative forward and it was able to wrap most threads up at the end in a satisfying conclusion.
While I still have my issues with some aspects of the narrative, it was at least a competent attempt at telling a story. It did not rely solely on fan service to keep the viewers' attention and that made me actually emotionally invested in what was going on.

I don't think he's going against the system, tho. He's a hero as a Hobby. He doesn't even realise people are judging him. All he wants is to be a Hero. Heck he doesn't even pay much emphasis on the money (Probably cuz Genos is paying rent, but meh).
In my opinion, that's pretty simple, but pretty deep. You do what you like, and work hard for it. All that matters in the end is whether you feel you've achieved it, and not whether others tell you you've achieved it.

As a trans woman myself I would actually argue One Piece does an awful job in regards to trans characters with all its characters playing into the offensive Okama stereotype. Sure some of them are highly likable characters (Looking at you Bentham) but they still play into the Okama stereotype. Good examples of trans characters would be the leads of the anime Wandering Son, Ruka Urushibara from Steins Gate (Not perfect but a lot better than most) And Rui Ninomiya from Gatchaman Crowds (Who canonically isn't trans but who is so very obviously written as trans accidentally that I count her as trans...like seriously every aspect of her character hit me right in my trans heart)

The high energy animation when Ikki turns off parts of his body to increase the rest of it are super hype, and the Ittou Rasetsu sequence is straight-up one of my favourite 1-hit KOs in all of media.
i honestly really liked Chivalry i like the fact that the main character get in a relationship earlier on and there being a plot around it being hidden though nothing beats my love for the Trinity Seven harem

Now this other girl is holding a piece of metal that burns at roughly HALF THE TEMPERATURE OF THE FRICKING SUFRACE OF THE SUN. It would be EXTREMELY expensive to even find a metal to work for that. It would be pretty fair to assume that Ikki's sword would be a molten puddle, and EVERYTHING WOULD DIE INSTANTLY! HOLY MIYAZAKI THESE PEOPLE CANNOT HANDLE TEMPERATURES PROPLERLY. Just burning at 100~200 degrees Celsius would be enough to absolutely frick everything up, you don't need to turn it up to 11 you crazy anime writers!

I think you're unduly harsh on Chivalry, as there are truly more mediocre and worse examples than it (in recent seasons, Unlimited Fafnir, Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle, Absolute Duo, Aria of the Curse for the Holy Swordsman and Sky Wizard Academy - some of those names are wrong I'm sure). The love story is also engaging, as is the tournament arc. I do agree others are better though like Tokyo Ravens. Strike the Blood may be comparable or worse, but I like anyway, hence my avatar. I do like your videos though and your analysis though and understand your reasoning, so please keep it up.

I know, but it was a fun watch and the characters were likeable and interesting designs without being as generic as usual (if their background and motivations are considered). MC was pretty generic, but the setting made up for it and unlike some harem fantasy, it did feel like there was pressure and stakes.

I remember reading the manga of Chivalry of a Failed Knight and was blown away when Ikki and Stella got together. I couldn't believe they were acting similar to y'know real people! There romance actually . ..went somewhere! Not the same regurgitated nonsense of fan-service, blubbering idiots, painful flirting, and fan-service that goes nowhere and wastes screen time/manga pages. The best part . .both of them are likable and you want to actually see them win.
I had passed over this show as well as The Asterisk War for being somewhat average anime but coming back to Chivalry, I really enjoyed the characters and the maturity of the romance. I guess being aimed at a mature audience allowed them to delve into mature subject matter such as both of them having qualms that their relationship was not progressing at one point and even going so far as talk about having sex while they were in the cabin and Stella admitting she was horny. These subtle things make Chivalry's romance more relatable to real life than some superficial relationship imo.
I like the more washed out and lighting tones of Chivalry, it's simple but it's pleasing to the eyes, unlike Asterisk where it looks tacky as hell. Plus y'know I kind of care about the romance more. Fight direction could be a little better and some fanservice scenes did not need to take place at all. But it's much better than Asswar's fanservice which just made me stop immediately.
