  • We visit iSimangaliso Wetland Park near St. Lucia, as well as Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve during a long weekend trip to Northern KZN. Enjoy our travel review.
iSimangaliso Wetland Park is a declared Ramsar site, as well as South Africa's very first World Heritage Site.
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve, a Big 5 park, is the oldest proclaimed reserve in Africa.
Both are well worth a visit, and should definitely be added to your South Africa travel & adventure list.

Other parks in the area I've enjoyed include Ithala, Mkuze and Ndumo. I've not been to Tembe, but that's meant to be good as well.

I haven't seen Ithala and Ndumo. Have stopped briefly at Tembe twice and enjoyed what I saw of it. I found it to be quite unique with deep sands and dense bush as well as open wetlands.

Great review, add Mbibi and Lake Sibaya to your return trip, great sand driving and very good camping. Also lookat Mkuze reserve, stunning!

I really hope we can get to them this year. Thanks for the tips. I'd like to do a northern KZN trip, some amazing coastline amongst other attractions.

Oh I miss Hluhluwe-Imfolozi! And the stay at Tugela Mouth on the way from Durban.

For camping you can include Ndumo GR (excellent birding). Bonamanzi private GR very close to False Bay. There is a private campsite at Umfolozi, Nyalazi Gate but nothing inside. The honorary rangers are restoring the Mkhuze Emshopi camp

We had an Mkuze trip planned for Easter but unfortunately that had to be abandoned due to the lockdown. Hoping to get back to it next year same time.

We've stayed at Mpila in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi. Basic self catering chalets, which we liked.
We also stayed in a cottage called Monzi Country Cottage. Booked on Airbnb, very nice 👌🏾
