  • Julius Boros won the first of his two U.S. Opens - and denied Ben Hogan’s bid for three straight - at the Northwood Club in Dallas. Hogan, competing near his boyhood home of Fort Worth, held a two-stroke lead over George Fazio through 36 holes, but he wilted in the 98-degree Texas heat with rounds of 74-74 on Saturday to finish in third place. Boros, who had turned professional just three years earlier at age 29, finished at 1-over 281, four strokes ahead of runner-up Ed Oliver.
