There was no internet, and everyone I knew was still using spinning tackle. That first birds nest all my friends made fun of me. Telling me that spinning reels were the way to go. I gave up bait casters for spinning rods once they got the spoils figured out....now I will take the pepsi challenge with anyone on distance and accuracy with a spinning rod setup regardless of line weight or type.
So maybe a dumb question, but I am new to using braid on my baitcaster. How do i get it evenly distributed on the spool? it tends to spool more on the left side.
If you're new to bait casting, make sure to readjust for each lure you tie on, also practice using your thumb, so you can eventually turn your brakes and tension down a bit for more casting distance.
Good luck one of the most important things is to keep your thumb on the spool & depending when the backlash happens determines what you need to adjust the brake is also very important.
Use the tip of your thumb nail on the spool as the lure is flying. I basically keep all of my tension knobs completely loose for casting distance, and I control spool from over speed with my thumb nail.
Good way to learn in the very beginning but keeping the tension knob loose without any rattle in the spool will be a much better experience when you can thumb the spool
I just bought a Magic L ultra light casting rod with a Spartacus reel. I added 4lb Mono and I’m throwing a light 2g lure and I just keep backlashing everytime I throw. Even if I do what you did.
I’m having an issue with the baitcaster I just bought, put 50lb braid on it and a 3/4 oz lure and I have the tensioner all the way tight and my lure still falls fast. I was hoping to use pretty big baits on this but it ain’t looking good. The baitcaster is rated for musky so it definitely should be able to
I have a big bait caster What’s the brakes? Mine has tension nob Drag The release is on the side And a button for bait clicker Having hell trying to cast it Im using it for cats So run egg slip weight 1-2oz Been done with the dam pole and reel lol
Today was maybe my 7th or 8th time fishing. Ive got all my gear but im not catching fish. Ive been mostly dock fishing with all kinds of lures except live worms. Im usually hitting the water by noon. I cant tell if its the hour of the day or me just refusing to use live worms. Because i cant seem to catch anything! 😢😅😭🤧
And then smash a hard cast into a strong headwind…if you want to cast without thumbing the spool, why not just use a spin reel? Also…if you can’t figure out why thumbing the spool is an advantage for casting accurately (why would accuracy even matter?🙄) just put an earthworm on a piece of string tied to a stick.
Baitcast reels are great when you need muscle the fast retrieval speed, the heavy drag and being able to pull a fish through heavy cover all are beneficial and something a spinning reel will struggle to do
Never got a backlash with my Abu but one shimano reel I’ve never had it not backlash you can basically only cast 15ft out, if that and then not get one if you have your thumb slowing it down. While with my Abu I just cast and right before it hits the water I put my thumb on the line so it doesn’t backlash and that’s with no breaks
Even after adjusting it I was able to get three to four casts without causing a bird's nest, but then I would get like five or six in a row that it would cause a bird's nest again. So I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I think I'm just going to stick to spinning rods. I was trying to learn all three fly fishing, baitcasters and spinning rods but baitcasters are obviously just not for me.
