I think it’s important to remember that none of this free quality content would be available if it were not for Eric’s generosity. He started doing this for us during the pandemic to keep us all motivated and inspired. He also does have a business to promote which is a necessary part of the daily videos. Let’s lift each other up instead of criticizing.
Wow, what a thrill to see this class from 3 years ago, many thanks Eric and Tom, a lifetime student watercolorist . Same as Eric says, I've been a frustrated mess and still years later I still feel intimidated. These classes help me to learn as well as gives me confidence to keep painting like Thomas....I cannot express how your teaching Eric has inspired me, and Tom as well, merci Beacoup Fellows. Mrs. St. Tick
As a beginner water colourist, I can't thank you enough for the high quality teaching videos you make available. They are incredibly informative and inspirational. I especially love Thomas Schaller's work and teaching method. Thank you, Eric Rhoades!
I’ve tried watercolor years ago, was still working retail, just became very frustrated with the process. I’m now retired, have a granddaughter who taught herself how to play the guitar by watching You Tube. I figured I could learn painting that way too. Now at 80 years old, I’m enjoying all the instruction that is free here! Thank you for getting me started on a new addiction! Lol! I’m not doing too bad. Proud of my self!
I watch both Thomas and Streamline whenever I can. I was so excited to see that Thomas was on today. The way Thomas identified and then drew together design elements was nothing short of enlightening for me. I’ll be watching this again. Thank you, Thomas and Eric.
Is there somewhere we can look at the final painting? I’m really interested in looking at it front on not in an angle. And of course when the paint is dry hopefully also finished. I love the loose feeling and like to see how it ends up.
I so admire this artist...Hearing the explanations of why and seeing his how has been a fascinating lesson. Thank you Eric for providing this valuable show!
Thomas you are an amazing and generous artist so informative so exciting to watch. Thanks Eric for giving us this opportunity to learn from a real genuine gentleman!!
what an amazing demo! Hearing you guys talk about making art your profession is so inspiring...crossing my fingers for my own path. Thanks a mill for sharing such great tips
if you would like to view and learn more about the artist then why not purchase his book! Eric’s introduction speech was worthwhile listening to. I purchased Thomas’ book, thank you Eric for introducing him to us. ❤️
The mention of diagonal positioning of lights and darks to pull people throughout the painting compositionally is a good suggestion. I have done it for years, as well using color accents, but did it intuitively without realizing the compositional advantage.
Absolutely loved this! I haven't painted a watercolor in a bit since I have been experimenting with Acrylic and Gouache! This makes me hungry for my watercolors once again!! Lovely painting and love the technique he uses!
I was glad to hear the story of Joseph and the life changing moment. If I were to take a class from Thomas, the first question I’d ask is what his art life practice was. His thought processes…so I was happy for the questions asked. We can watch til we’re blue in the face, but I want to know what makes him tick.
Such a magnificent artist who is as humble and kind as anyone can be. What a super surprise it was to have found this older episode. Pray tell, whatever happened to showing the completed painting?
Love the variety of artists I am getting to meet through this program How do you go about getting posing air magazine I live in Florida but am not experienced yet only painting watercolors for two years in Florida
I love ❤️ the amount of information you give 💓 in this interesting💓💞 video thank you for the💞 beautiful💕 video you shared with all of us, a big hug and good luck in what you do. thanks for sharing stay connected ,💓...
Wow….incredible interview, painting, thought processes, design, techniques, etc….I will most certainly be watching this again. Less than a month ago, I had NO idea who Thomas Schaller was….I was just drawn deeply to his work without much thought to the artist….sorry if that sounds impersonal or rude….it’s not meant to be. So much of this interview seemed to strike home for me….no more excuses….I need to start my journey….I have no goal in mind other than to enjoy myself in retirement…..thank you for the kick start! (Where can this painting be seen in its completion?)

Hi everyone! I am a retired math teacher who just started painting after I retired & then more seriously in spring of 2929 when I was sheltering at home.
great tips. Wor,ing on a digital waterco,or (using rebelle software, which is on-sale right now, bet the pro version for same low price), and m having trouble because I didn't plan out things like shadows and contrasts for maxi um impact beforehand. My work as of now is too discombobulated because of the lack of planning in this larticulsr scene I'm working on. I have to stop, take a snapshot, and work it up in photoshop to see how I can change va.ues and shadows and co,or etc to work better toeher.
Eric, you talk too much! You spent the whole first half of the video yakking with Thomas. Then you told him he only had 20 minutes or so to complete the demo. Instead of painting, you talked. Then, had the affrontery to tell him he only had 3 minutes left. How rude. I’ve tried to watch some of your other videos with well known artists, but they’re all the same…too much Eric and not enough content.
Agree completely. Schaller is introduced as probably the best watercolorist in America, then Eric talks which prevents Schaller from starting. This resulted in painting being much less complete than it could have been, and even moreso it rushed Schaller’s explanations of techniques. Thank you Pat for stating this, I value these videos and would love to have seen/heard 20 more minutes from Schaller.
I don't know what everyone is complaining about. You get to watch a master artist for Free! Fast forward is you don't want to hear the intro. I enjoyed the discussion. And these are meant to get us interested in painting a give us tips. There's not enough time to do a full work of fine art. Also, this is a promotion for Eric to spread the word about the magazine and the videos.
When Thomas says that he paints in complimentaries, it sounded like he was speaking about mixing complimentaries versus visual complimentaries; can anyone clarify?
He uses visual complementaries. If you watch him paint regularly (it's not apparent here), he works out of his palette directly, doing any mixing on the paper.
Visual complimentaries means the synthesis of two opposite colors that our eyes blend to make a new color. That's not what Thomas does in his paintings. He typically uses a trio of secondary complimentary colors to play off each other to create contrast and an emotional element. His favorites are purple, orange and green in various shades and tones.
Agreement about drawing before painting…I don’t understand how people understand shapes and shadows without the preliminary drawing. I need to draw first.
Outrageous that Rhoads would yakkity yak throughout the demonstration, while Thomas labored away! And to not allow him to finish his painting nor allow viewers to see the final result of Schaller's work here. We watched faithfully and were denied a final look at his work. Shame on you Eric! Get wise Eric. This is NOT about you, it's about the generous artist's work and thoughts. Butt out please! Schaller deserves more respect!
I love ❤️ the amount of information you give 💓 in this interesting💓💞 video thank you for the💞 beautiful💕 video you shared with all of us, a big hug and good luck in what you do. thanks for sharing stay connected ,💓...

Thomas is an amazing artist - but "best in the USA"? It's very subjective. I'd say he's one of the best. Dean Mitchell is too, as is Mary Whyte, to name just a couple that come to mind.

He's fantastic! ❤
yes!:))))😊
Thank you Erik.

Beautiful! Can’t wait to see the completed painting. Thomas is such a humble, amazing artist. Thank you for sharing your talent.
Thank you so much for this great demo. Thomas Schaller is a wonderful watercolor artist and instructor.
I watch both Thomas and Streamline whenever I can. I was so excited to see that Thomas was on today. The way Thomas identified and then drew together design elements was nothing short of enlightening for me. I’ll be watching this again. Thank you, Thomas and Eric.
Fascinating video … wonderful. To see Mr Schaller in action is a privilege.
I am glad for all programs that are helping a lot of people who like painting.
Thank you
So much knowledge and wisdom packed into everything this mans says. Thank you Thomas! You are truly inspiring.
Have a complete episode please. As a beginner it’s frustrating to have a teacher stop midway through.
Is there somewhere we can look at the final painting? I’m really interested in looking at it front on not in an angle. And of course when the paint is dry hopefully also finished.
I love the loose feeling and like to see how it ends up.
Thomas is so generous to share his amazing talent. Thank you!
Did Thomas post his finished painting?
I so admire this artist...Hearing the explanations of why and seeing his how has been a fascinating lesson. Thank you Eric for providing this valuable show!

Thomas you are an amazing and generous artist so informative so exciting to watch. Thanks Eric for giving us this opportunity to learn from a real genuine gentleman!!

This is so helpful i have never been shown this an Thank You For Explaining This Thomas. This has helped me so much.❤
I have only come across Thomas's work recently, but I absolutely love it. This demo was awesome. Thank you very much.
The mention of diagonal positioning of lights and darks to pull people throughout the painting compositionally is a good suggestion. I have done it for years, as well using color accents, but did it intuitively without realizing the compositional advantage.
Yes! Please make a video on perspective for the artist! ❤

I am changing from oils to acrylic painting. A frustrating proposition! I love your presentations. Please keep them coming.
Such a magnificent artist who is as humble and kind as anyone can be. What a super surprise it was to have found this older episode.

Would love to win a digital subscription to the Plein Air magazine.

@@barbarawhitehead5488 RIGHT ON! You spoke for all of us viewers! Rhoads is about $$, publicity, etc. Tom Schaller is about ART!

Finished painting?
He loves to hear himself talk I think.
When Thomas says that he paints in complimentaries, it sounded like he was speaking about mixing complimentaries versus visual complimentaries; can anyone clarify?

Back in the 60's my first art teacher said; we paint~ Not draw first~ Aloha BigIsle🌋HI.USA.
Have ypu changed your color scheme of late?
ok,,great,..but where's the rest !
I didn’t put iam frim Sherman,Texas ❤
If you had a photography or art teacher who told you to always put things in the center, that teacher should be fired.
Agreement about drawing before painting…I don’t understand how people understand shapes and shadows without the preliminary drawing. I need to draw first.
What a poorley handled interview Eric. Just saw it and felt that if he is truly a world class watercolorist you cut him short. Not good.
🥰
I thought your special January event would be shoveling
👍❤️💋🌞👏

Yeah he yakkety yaks too much for me.
Yes, I got very frustrated about him incessantly talking about himself!
Instead of criticizing the people who introduce us to these great artists you can search the artist and go to their own website where they are not interrupted. I think Eric asks important questions.
Wow, l feel that criticism was unnecessarily harsh.
