    Fumée
Inspired by and in recognition of Reynaldo Hahn’s legacy, compose Geoffrey Gordon re-imagines, through his own distinct and intensely expressive musical language, the beguiling atmosphere, adventurous harmonic progressions and profound beauty of Hahn’s exquisite and contemplative chanson, “Fumée” (“Smoke”) - first published by Paris Heugel (1896) - in the form of an alluring and intense new concerto for clarinet and chamber orchestra. E Boeing and amplifying Hahn’s setting of the text by Jean Moréas, the concerto idiomaticallyaddresses the poet’s message of a life that goes from ashes to ashes, envying the freedom and transience of smoke which has no past, no responsibility, and is without the hardships of life…vanishing into the ether.
    Debussys Première Rhapsodie
Providing a complementary work to Fumée, composer Geoffrey Gordon orchestrated the well known solo clarinet work, Premiére Thapsodie (first Rhapsodie). Where he considers and develops the relationship between the solo clarinet and that of the ensemble in both line and harmony, and colour and rhythmic pulse, drawing on the challenges which Debussy provides for the performer, in tests of endurance, breath control, and subtleties of tone, intonation, and nuance, providing a fascinating and enduring addition to the clarinet repertoire.
