    The genius songwriter and the genius architect behind the sound. It was heartwarming to see they are still brothers.

    Stewart Copeland was an unbelievably strong drummer. He plays with more energy than any drummer I have ever known. It's amazing the stamina he had to keep it up for a whole set.

    There is a deep love and bond between them that is obvious and touching. Their clashes in the police were real , but their mutual respect here is really great. What a journey they've had musically and personally together. The police were really superb, but there were 3 pretty strong egos, and it was probably pretty exhausting. But that sort of musical alchemy is rare, and the sum of its disparate parts

      I always considered Copeland one of the best drummers. In all of rock.
      I can't say that about Sting or Andy Summers, as unique as he is. Only Copeland. I felt the drums drove this band more than anything else. I loved it. ❤️

    The Police have been my #1 band since I got Outlandos d Amour for Christmas in 1980. I had posters of Stewart and his kits all over my wall. Sting and Stew are polar opposites and that’s what made it work. Andy was the happy medium between them.

    Ha ...that was funny!! From the comments people seem to think that Sting is only serious. I read his autobiography and that couldn't be further from the truth. His humour is more subtle but it is still there. I wish these 2 gents would do a musical project together. I couldn't stop laughing when they were doing their lovely little bossa nova song and then Stewart turned it into a full on Rock Concert and Sting the school teacher admonishing him for playing it wrong....way too funny!!!

  • @Burnwash
    @Burnwash 4 года назад +45

    4:15 - a flash of truth, I think; two men of the same age - one who takes himself very seriously and has a restricted sense of humor, and one who is relaxed and at ease with himself, resulting in a child-like attitude. Must have been tough for these opposing personalities to find common ground.

    • @asm1
      @asm1 4 года назад +17

      Yes and no - I think the music ALLOWED them to find common ground. Read in an interview once that the two of them went and "got therapy" in the build up to the 2007 tour as there were still "tensions." They apparently cleared the air, and it struck me that Copeland said they found out things they didnt know about each other, including what they did to rub each other the wrong way... Copeland even said "I wish I had been kinder to Sting."
      This is a fun section between two old friends, probably taking the mickey out of their "past tensions". You can see however, the chemistry/click between them still. Sting starts playing and Copeland is there immediately with his frying pan.... brilliant. One more tour guys please ?

      If you listen to those 2 describe how Andy Summers be-dazzled them both endlessly with his vast reservoir of guitar knowledge that is the glue that held them together. They both had to rise to Andy Summers' level of skill and talent.

    • @Burnwash
      @Burnwash 3 года назад

      @@tripledotter I've never heard of Sumner being impressed with anyone but himself. Any links?

      Both have strong personalities, both are highly talented in their own field, both are very intelligent and headstrong; they’re basically chips of the same old block, hence it’s what drew them towards each other, but also why they clash. Classical attraction of opposites. Add to that the fact that Sting is more of a reserved Brit and Stewart the outgoing, no holds barred extrovert American. But they know goddamn well they have a very unique chemistry together and with Andy Summers, it only took the wisdom of age to acknowledge each other’s soul connection, and be comfortable with arguments past to the point that they’ve become mere anecdotes they verbally joust with. All the better for them, their musical legacy is invaluable.

    • @007ndc
      @007ndc 3 года назад +1

      @@doh4828 great assessment. An the guitar master Andy Summers who is older and more experienced than the other two was the glue to bind them.all together. The alchemy of The Police is wondrous to behold

    Sting said he had the power to create touchstones for moments in people's lives, and I thought surely there's something like that for me from this artist I listened to so much throughout my life. And I remembered that I swore "in the days still left we'll walk in fields of gold" to my now ex-wife. That song makes me wistful of something I had looked forward to but alas never came to be. It is indeed a touchstone that touches my heart with bittersweetness when I hear it.

    3:28 Stewart playing a Brazilian frigideira along with Sting playing “Roxanne” as a bossa nova is a perfect note in this discussion. Maybe pagode groups should consider incorporating “Roxanne” in their repertoire.
