Since the lord of the hundreds is a moody and childish leader that drags his sheep followers around wrecking havoc, in my group we have renamed them "trumpists" and "amlovers"(depends if we play with only mexicans or not), because they mimic both presidents and their followers actions
Not at all surprised to see that this new expansion is yet another hit! Can't wait to see gameplay of it. Also, Kyle Ferrin's art is basically half the reason I love Root; it just gives life to a cute, complex world that I wish I could inhabit lol Great vid!

Great review! I agree with your final thoughts; the Rats are really well done and balanced. Badgers definitely feel like a puzzle, and it's interesting to see if they'll turn out to be the "Red" militant faction that ADSET makes them out to be.
@@LordoftheBoard Right? They start with 8 warriors but they can really seem like tissue paper if the Eyrie/LotH comes over and gives them a bop early on.

I really wonder what the gimmick for the next expansion will be (assuming there will be another one). Riverfolk had the second Vagabond and the Mechanical Marquise, Underworld had new maps, and Marauders had hirelings. I'm interested to see what they do next

@@LordoftheBoard Sweet. I love what I’ve seen about Root, mostly from your channel, but trying to break down what comes from what box or side deck or mini expansion is a bit harder to parse.
Just a brief explanation: Base: Factions are - Cats, Birds, Woodland Alliance, Vagabond (Tinkerer, Thief and Ranger characters). Base deck, autumn and winter maps. Riverfolk: Factions are - Otters, Lizards, 2nd vagabond board (along with new Vagabond Characters: Arbiter, Vagrant, Scoundrel) and components. Also adds Mechanical Marquise bot (but this is generally viewed as not very good by the solo community). Underworld: Factions are - Moles, Corvids. Mountain and Lake maps, along with the Pass and Ferry landmarks respectively. Marauders: Factions are - Rats, Badgers. Adds Advanced setup cards for more competitive play. Adds the Hirelings for the 4 base game factions (cats, birds, WA and vaga). Clockwork: Adds 4 bots for the base factions (cats - updated version from riverfolk one, birds, WA, vaga), generally considered to be very good by the solo community. Each bot has difficulty and trait cards. Clockwork 2: Adds 4 bots for the factions in Riverfolk and Underworld expansions (otters, lizards, moles, corvids). Each bot has difficulty and trait cards. Also has extra trait cards for bots from clockwork 1. Vagabond pack: Adds 3 new Vagabond characters (Harrier, Adventurer, Ronin). Also provides custom meeples for every Vagabond character! without this all Vagabonds are represented by a grey or black racoon meeple (now only Thief and Ronin use these meeples). Exiles and Partisans: Adds a new deck which can be used instead of the base deck, which is generally considered to be better and more fun. Landmarks pack: Adds 4 new Landmarks (Forge, Treetop, Black Market and Lost City), which can be put on any map to add some importance to certain clearings. before this, the Pass and Ferry landmarks could only be used on their respective maps: now rules have been added to allow them to be used on any map, and their respective maps can even be played without them. Riverfolk Hirelings pack: Adds the Hirelings for the riverfolk expansion factions (Otters, Lizards) as well as a pink Hireling, not associated with any faction (Hedgehogs). Underworld Hirelings pack: Adds Hirelings for Underworld expansion (Moles, Corvids) as well as a pink Hireling, not associated with any faction (Deer). Marauders Hirelings pack: Adds Hirelings for the Marauders expansion (Rats, Badgers) as well as a pink Hireling, not associated with any faction (don't know the animal, but they're a band on one side and an acrobat on the other). There is a Hirelings box to store all the Hirelings, not sure how you get that retail? Might be with one of the 3 above, or maybe bought separately idk. Then finally there are cosmetics such as resin clearing markers, playmats for the 4 maps, and card sleeves. I think that's everything? If anyone who knows sees I missed something let me know.
love the review. I dont think you were biased in its praise. It is a well made game. Love all the work you do with sound and editing. Well made video and you can tell a lot of care went into it.
I totally agree that the hirelings smooth out the two player experience. We played rats v cats this past weekend. I can’t wait to try the advanced set up.
“Like adding items to Smash Bros” You convinced me in one sentence. If that’s not excellent game reviewing then I don’t know what is. Also, can’t believe you made this video in 3 days! With b-roll, 20 mins long, title cards, and a thorough explanation of the whole expansion. That’s a whole lot more work than most people realize…guess I should be editing right now and not watching RUclips. 😳🙄
Haha perfect! glad you got the reference. and yeah it was quite a lot of work. I for some reason work better under pressure so ill challenge myself with something like that once in a while. :) thanks for watching!
Hi Sam, this video was really informative! I’m intrigued by these new factions. I was wondering how they stack in terms of your list of favorite Root factions overall?
Love your videos and can't wait to keep seeing more strategy videos for factions. I want to take some of what you teach and turn it into small paragraph intros for when I teach root to new people so they can know a little more about how to play the faction for the first time.
Great review, very well thought out! A non-Root question though... I love the artwork on the top left behind you, next to Maria and PaxViking...is that a board game cover?
Interesting note on the naming conventions of the factions; I subconsciously took their strange names to mean that they're not strictly governmental powers, but instead a long-forgotten holy force (whose only leader is divine) and a nameless bunch of anarchists (the Warlord being any rat that just happens to be anointed). While even the Lizard Cult and the Corvid Conspiracy are vying for control of public opinion, these two new factions really don't care about other people, since the Keepers don't score by ruling and the Hundreds want *all* enemy pieces gone, no negotiation. It's definitely a different flavor, but one that contributes to the more historical feel of Root with how "old woodland" the two factions feel. Otherwise, yes, I'm one such person who finds the Hundreds super difficult to oppose. The fact that they gain more actions with no way to lose them and score points merely by existing has me concerned for their overall strength. I think 4-player might be best for them to have a much harder time actually winning, what with how many more enemy pieces there'd be. Still, like you say, super compelling presence. Also like you say, I'm a big fan of the Keepers. Encamping, decamping, going on their pilgrimage feels rewarding. If they're as militant as the game suggests, perhaps I need to be more aggressive in recruiting and moving, but I'll learn with time (and perhaps some new strategy guides? Plz). Good job, as usual. Love your thoughts and presentation! Hope you're doing well.
I enjoy this take a lot! And I will meditate on it some more. In Lower player counts its all about utilizing Hirelings on the backline. Dont craft cards that increase their Prowess. Instead bags are good because that Mood is one of the Warlords best! There is a fun little Snippet Nitrorev made on his channel! check that out. Guides are coming :) I appreciate you!
Great job! Thank you for these videos! Could you do an in depth look at the hirelings for the purpose of strategy and how to play certain ones, maybe even ur perspective of ranking them in some way :)
You have the best Root coverage! It is my favorite board game. I like a game that you can grow as you go with. Can't wait for you to rate the factions again.
Great review! There is so much content with this expansion, haven’t played enough yet to feel all the stuff. So far badgers seem OP, and rats more challenging, but I have to test more
I just received my copy of the new expansion, and I have been looking for a video to give me a thoughtful overview as I prepare to learn how to play with the new factions. Unfortunately, I found most videos either moved too slow, and went too in depth about the mechanics, or they moved way too quick to actually grasp what is happening with this expansion. This review, however, provided a very nice balance of pacing and detail. Thank you for making this video!
I just want to say that this is the first of your videos I have watched and I agree with literally everything you said, I plan to watch many more, and I just subscribed. P.S. I love the Smash Bros analogy!
For two players, should I do this or clockwork? We are casual gamers. I also heard there is a clockwork 3 coming that would better integrate hirelings with bots, so maybe I should wait for that and just get marauders expansion for now?
Question: are the hirelings compatible with the clockwork factions? I thought the automated factions was the devs answer to low player count problem so I’m kinda confused about that
I'm SOOOO excited to play this! unfortunately I haven't played Root in such a long time I might need play a few practice rounds before I jump into these factions.
I love the hirelings idea for 2-3 player games. It opens up playing more the faction you want to (the Cats/Eyre/Alliance... threat can be included anyway). A boost to Root in my book. Two new factions are fun but I'm not done with all previous ones yet. never bad thing though (again no one NEEDS to play vaagbond for ruins etc).
Looks amazing! Will be getting Root (plus one expansion) when finances allow, and have really enjoyed all your Root content, which has really helped me narrow down which expansions and content to prioritise.
I have root and a couple expansion I would be interested in this expansion but too pricey. Will there be just hireling packages for sale for the base game?
@@LordoftheBoard Yes I have seen you play this one a lot, and it looks great! Hopefully we will do a full playthrough on it as well 😀 Will tell you how it went haha
Great content. I'm so stoked to get my Marauder copy on the table soon. Hopefully the Keepers burn my brain in the most fun way haha. Can't wait to fight as the Lord of the Hundreds soon as well! I mostly play 2 to 3 players, so hirelings are so welcomed here. Keep up the good work!
Hey LOTB! Great stuff. I love your content! Maybe you could help me know which expansion I should get first? I am soon going to pick up root because it looks great. But after that, which expansion is best for your first expansion? Thanks!
I have loved the base game of root, looking at getting an expansion. Could i ask why you believe the exp. With the moles Is #1, like what specific things make it better than this one?
The Underworld expansion is great because it comes with 1 militant faction (duchy) and 1 insurgent faction (crows), and 2 new maps. Marauder is great because it enhances 2 player with the hirelings, no maps but 2 militant factions is good.
Your videos are amazing! I hope they bring the translated version of Marauder Expansion to Brazil! I'd love to play with the new factions and hirelings :(
@@hugotavaresgomes9539 Cara, eu vi o site da Meeple alguns dias atrás e fiquei frustrado pq não tinha nada lá! Você me salvou demais, eu não olharia de novo tão cedo! hahahaha
Great review! With all the new factions, hirelings, and advanced setup cards…what do you think is the best set up for a two-player game? (Without any clockwork!)
Did you play with the old influence system where you rolled at the end of your turn an swayed hirelings then? Stealing them from others or securing them for yourself? And if you have, how does it compare to this new system?
I hold you personally responsible for also getting me into Root like you did for Villainous i have played it a fair amount already seriously though thanks mate
I am new to Root and love the game. I only have the base game so far. Would like to buy an expansion soon. Which one is the best, or would you recommend after the base game? Should I buy them in order or jump straight to the Moles and Ravens because they have another map? Or is the new expansion by far the best?
Underworld Expansion is good for maps and 2 new factions. If you play at lower player counts mostly though i think marauders is better for next expansion!
I originally thought this was the best "1st expansion to get" as well, but then I considered the fact that the hirelings cannot be played with the faction they are based on, so the options would be super limiting because you only have base 4 factions +2. However, if you don't care about the hirelings, 2 militant factions is awesome, and I will now always play with ADSET so I understand why you call this the best 1st. I think Underworld narrowly beats it out, but this is certainly a close second imo.
for someone that just got root and all expansion, do you recommend to play the advanced set up Directly? or the original one that calculates the number depending on the player-count?
I would recommend standard way. Adset is really clear though and just having players follow the setup card i think is easy enough for first time setup!
A weird question since I tried to find an answer but failed over and over again: Does the expansion make other factions playable in a two player game? Asking about guys like Corvid Conspiracy or Lizard Cult.
i thought this expansion wasn’t out yet? it still says preorder on leder games. did everyone get it from the kickstarter or did i miss something? i’ve had my eyes on this expansion and thought it still wasn’t out
It has come to my attention that Lord of the Hundreds is a type of cheese.. and that is hilarious 🔥
Since the lord of the hundreds is a moody and childish leader that drags his sheep followers around wrecking havoc, in my group we have renamed them "trumpists" and "amlovers"(depends if we play with only mexicans or not), because they mimic both presidents and their followers actions
It's also something else, see my comment below
I thought they could never top the pun on "Marquise de Cat" but of course I was wrong...
We definitely going to mix them rabbit hirelings with the mice meeples. Just need fox meeples to complete the Woodland Alliance army.
I know right

For two players, should I do this or clockwork? We are casual gamers. I also heard there is a clockwork 3 coming that would better integrate hirelings with bots, so maybe I should wait for that and just get marauders expansion for now?
Question: are the hirelings compatible with the clockwork factions? I thought the automated factions was the devs answer to low player count problem so I’m kinda confused about that
No official rules for it yet I don’t believe
Love this and love your channel. Thanks man!
Do you know when it's coming in europe ?
I do not know! :/
@@LordoftheBoard 👌
I'm SOOOO excited to play this! unfortunately I haven't played Root in such a long time I might need play a few practice rounds before I jump into these factions.
Rats are super clean and easy.. Badgers less so. Im sure you could pick up and play the Rats easy peazy!
As someone who mostly plays games at 3p when not 2p, this is great. I somehow missed out on the KS, but just ordered everything on Amazon and MM.
Can't wait for this on Root digital!!
Me either! Exile and Partisans as well as the rest of the vagabonds releasing today I believe
Thank you for this, really helped me make up my mind about when to buy it.
Looks amazing! Will be getting Root (plus one expansion) when finances allow, and have really enjoyed all your Root content, which has really helped me narrow down which expansions and content to prioritise.
I have a series coming that should further help you decide which factions to go with when you play that I hope you enjoy :)
Awesome video :) really enjoy your root coverage.
I have the base game of root and am looking to snag an expansion. Which one would you recommend??
I would recommend Underworld expansion! It comes with 1 militant and 1 insurgent faction. And 2 new maps! :)
Thank you for thoughtful and consice review. I'm scared of how many years digital version will have to wait for this :')
Oh boy its gonna be a bit... haha!
what's the game on the top left of the video in the background? Behind you on the right. looks awesome.
That is Crescent Moon :) I have a video on it! Definitely check it out.
@LordoftheBoard for sure! Art look awesome.
I have root and a couple expansion I would be interested in this expansion but too pricey. Will there be just hireling packages for sale for the base game?
I’m unsure about the base game - but a hireling box and hireling packs are available on their store for preorder :)
Great video as always! I am curious though, will you ever do a playthrough of Root using the map you designed? I'd love to see that in action :)
Possibly! I hope too!
going to try this game next week! can't wait!
OMG Richard! YESSSSSS. Please let me know what you think. I love this game so much as you can tell!
@@LordoftheBoard Yes I have seen you play this one a lot, and it looks great! Hopefully we will do a full playthrough on it as well 😀 Will tell you how it went haha
what did you think about the landmarks?
I have a video coming up soon where I discuss them :)
Really great content, as always! Very enjoyable. Thank you!!
My pleasure!
I love the Badgers. Such a brain burner. I really enjoy their planning.
Hey LOTB! Great stuff. I love your content! Maybe you could help me know which expansion I should get first? I am soon going to pick up root because it looks great. But after that, which expansion is best for your first expansion? Thanks!
Oh wait- just finished the vid and you answered my question 😆
Glad I could help :)
@@LordoftheBoard thanks a lot!!!
Your videos are amazing! I hope they bring the translated version of Marauder Expansion to Brazil! I'd love to play with the new factions and hirelings :(
Thank you so much! And I hope that for you as well!
chegou!
@@hugotavaresgomes9539 Cara, eu vi o site da Meeple alguns dias atrás e fiquei frustrado pq não tinha nada lá! Você me salvou demais, eu não olharia de novo tão cedo! hahahaha
Will you be releasing an updated teir list soon? Really want to know your options with the advanced set up and the 2 new factions!!!
I will definitely release one!
Great review! With all the new factions, hirelings, and advanced setup cards…what do you think is the best set up for a two-player game? (Without any clockwork!)
Any 2 red factions is good with hirelings. Badgers / Eyrie / cats / rats and Moles
Hey, I love the work that you’re doing.
You're too nice :)
Still waiting for the digital version, anybody knows when it will come out?
Did you play with the old influence system where you rolled at the end of your turn an swayed hirelings then? Stealing them from others or securing them for yourself? And if you have, how does it compare to this new system?
New system is a lot cleaner. 💯 yes I played the original system. This one makes more sense and seems to balance out the game better as well!
I hold you personally responsible for also getting me into Root like you did for Villainous i have played it a fair amount already seriously though thanks mate
You know i dont feel bad about this... Hehe thanks for the support! and happy gaming.
Great review, i'll get this expansion
I am new to Root and love the game. I only have the base game so far. Would like to buy an expansion soon. Which one is the best, or would you recommend after the base game? Should I buy them in order or jump straight to the Moles and Ravens because they have another map? Or is the new expansion by far the best?
Underworld Expansion is good for maps and 2 new factions. If you play at lower player counts mostly though i think marauders is better for next expansion!
just started playing, thanks for you in-depth discussion of the game!
You’re welcome :)
I think underworld is best because it adds 1 militant and 1 insurrection, along with another pair of boards.
for someone that just got root and all expansion, do you recommend to play the advanced set up Directly? or the original one that calculates the number depending on the player-count?
Don't go into adset right away. Play 8-10 games with different factions first.
I would recommend standard way. Adset is really clear though and just having players follow the setup card i think is easy enough for first time setup!
A weird question since I tried to find an answer but failed over and over again:
Does the expansion make other factions playable in a two player game? Asking about guys like Corvid Conspiracy or Lizard Cult.
Even with hirelings it is recommended you only do 2 player games with militant factions - being Badgers, Cats, Birds, Moles and Rats :)
what's the game on the top left of the screen behind you? Seems nice
That is Crescent Moon :) I have a review on it here on the channel
@@LordoftheBoard thank you! I soon spotted it in your reviews!
i thought this expansion wasn’t out yet? it still says preorder on leder games. did everyone get it from the kickstarter or did i miss something? i’ve had my eyes on this expansion and thought it still wasn’t out
I got this from Kickstarter yes . I believe wide retail release will be in august :)
@@LordoftheBoard ah ok thank you so much, i got into root after this campaign ended, can’t wait for the public release
I love your enthusiasm for Root!
I am so glad you do! :)
Great review. Does anyone know what the game in the top left hand corner is called, the art js gorgeous and the game intrigues me.
That is Crescent Moon 🌙 - I got a video on it coming soon :)
@@LordoftheBoard yay I can’t wait to see that video, from what I can tell I already am going to like it
Adset is THE game changer in this expansion!
As per review... I completely agree.
Great review, do you have thoughts on the new landmarks?
Yes! I have a video lined up on them :)
@@LordoftheBoard Sweet!
Excited to play this eventually
