I have been living in Markham since I migrated from HKG to Toronto 30 years ago. When I worked in King/University area downtown, I took Go train. You two may try to explore areas along the Yonge subway line. As a rule of thumb, the further north of Bloor, the lower is the rent and more "local community" feel, but of course a little more time on subway to commute back to downtown till you switch to a job near to where you live. When you switch job, you may bargain for higher pay too. Just a word of caution, Toronto is just like other big American cities: murals on a wall of building is art authorized by landlord, graffiti on hydro box etc on sidewalk is illegal (not chill), camping tent in a park is illegal (homeless people)...... try to avoid neighborhood with sight of tents in park, widespread graffiti, or shoes hanging on overhead phone/power line etc. Having said that, Toronto has been consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in N. America and the world. At least, for the last 30 years, I never feel "unsafe" when I occasionally need to go out or go back home after midnight. Stay positive and have fun.
In the 70s and 80s, Riverdale was a very popular community for Chinese immigrants, with plenty of shops and restaurants along Gerrard and Broadview, a Chinese library and senior center, close to the park, overlooking DVPkwy. King Streetcar also runs 24/7, plus Queen Streetcar every 3 minutes. You can go check out the nice middle-class neighborhood along Danforth and Boardview, or Queen to Kingston Road, the Beaches area.
I grew up Gerrard Chinatown. Danforth Boardview, Queen Kingston and the Beaches are very expensive now. A lot of developments going on now. If you want to live in east side, try along subway line and there are a lot of apartments for rent. Down by Queen, there is only streetcar.
Subway stations are along Bloor/Danforth Street not Queen Street. If you move close to Danforth Street you can take the subway to work and it is on the East side. There are a lot of different communities/ethnicity along Danforth. Toronto is a multicultural city and there are pros and cons for that. Enjoy!

If you want to explore east Toronto more, you may want to continue further east on Queen streetcar. Exit at Coxwell Ave., walk south towards the lake and you'll definitely find the more "chill" feel I think you may like at the Kew Beach. Since it's approaching winter, it'll be a bit cold but you'll enjoy the view and feel. Or you can plan for a spring or summer visit for next year! Enjoy!

我覺得可以住Yonge st地鐵沿線因為冇車都很方便，最好挑選是大業主擁有Condo因為沿線有很多是大業主物業，價格比較合理同祇會跟著法例去調整加租幅度，不會因為小業主睇到市場情況而選擇賣樓或用收回自住理由而作出不繼續簽約給現時租客等租客搬出後偷雞用現時市場升幅較大再租出，因為通常舊租客搬走後很少會再理舊業主事宜和不會去浪費金錢用法律追訴，早7-8年前東邊都有很多新Condo樓價和租金比西邊便宜，但疫情後就不知道。
