Thank you! This was a labor of love for sure and my final production as the founder, music director and executive producer of CYO. Grateful for my students fortitude and open minds and brilliance. I love you all. Thankful for my friendship with Tommy and continued professional relationship with Styx. Michael Bradford did the mixing, Stefan Podell is the arranger. Thank you for supporting my amazing students.

Have been watching your online performances again and again. I keep imagining how cool this must have been for the students! I'm a former theater teacher and am thrilled to see young people involved in the arts. Love seeing this virtual version as I've been involved in virtual choirs during this time. All the best to you in your future endeavors.

This just happened to pop up in my YT sidebar, and I'm really glad I clicked on it! I have seen a number of quite good collaborative online music performances ("COMP"?), and this is one of the best. Thanks to all involved!
MANY years ago, someone once said simply of Uriah Heep's Ken Hensley "Long may he produce." (He did, quite wonderfully, and his "Last Dance" makes a pretty good orchestral-rock synthesis too!) I would surely wish the same for all who contributed here. Hopefully Tommy is able to work with CYO again in the future -- it would be a blessing for all involved and for us the grateful listeners too!

It's always hard to stop listening to anything Tommy Shaw does. He's such a pleasure hearing. And he usually has a positive message in many of his songs. Tommy is my absolute favorite lyricist. He has a realism in his words that are much appreciated.
I also can't wait until Styx releases their new studio album, hopefully sometime next year.
I've been into TS since the late 70's. He's the very reason I became a Styx fan. How sweet of you to share a link for donating to the CYO.
Hello Fil, hope you and everyone are doing well. Have a blessed, Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year...🎸🎄🎉

Music, like all art...paintings, theater, writing...connects you to an innate experiential plane that transcends everyday emotion or state of being. We love how we feel when we hear Idina Menzel sing “Let it go” not just because we recognize her talent but because our minds and hearts join hers as she soars through notes none of us can hit. Tommy Shaw loves music, is HUGELY talented and never stops creating... and inviting people to join him in his joy.

What a song! I was like 14 when it came out and it spoke to me. Blue collar man hit home also later. Those guys created a lot of songs that anyone could relate to. And it didn't hurt they played so good. Thanks for bringing this to light. Kudos to the CYO, they stepped up, kicked butt and took names. They got my respect.

In addition to the monumental amount of production work, I hope people realize the amount of work each musician did here as well. I can say from first-hand experience that it is much more difficult to perform the piece this way than it is altogether in a live setting. Hats off to all - really well done and a joy to listen to!

The US government contributes very little to the arts, perhaps because the arts are essential forms of self expression, critical thought, and alternative ways of imagining the world and challenging cultural hegemony. It's wonderful to see the commitment of these young people to music. Their performance shows the passion and joy they experience and communicate to us. Tommy Shaw's song is a perfect piece for them to play, its message is loud and clear, and the performers feel it, embody it, and live it. Thank you once again for a meaningful presentation, Fil!

Great analysis Fil, so uplifting in theses difficult times. That lead-in from the orchestra sounds very seasonal. Tommy Shaw's vocals still sounding brilliant, along with the fabulous playing and singing of the dedicated young musicians of The CYO. I think Tommy is blessed with a voice that has stood the test of time. Or maybe he was very shrewd in choosing/singing lead vocals on those Styx songs back in the last century that were well within his range. But nobody knew back then how far the music of Styx would go! So good to see this merging of talents! Thank you Fil, stay safe.

Even though his original band Styx has been snubbed from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a band due to Dennis DeYoung's foray from rock into strictly techno/pop ballads, Tommy Shaw has the resume to be inducted on his own. What an outstanding singer, songwriter, guitarist and performer. He has an equal to or greater than body of work as many of the artists already in the "Hall", and has stood the test of time as can be witnessed by his current performances.

I had heard Styx on the radio. But never heard an album. The night I got out of the Navy, we had a huge party. Various substances & alcohol were ingested liberally. As the party wound down, there were the usual suspects left. We went over to a guys apartment, he was blasting the MUSIC! I asked about some one calling the manager to complain. The guy said, he was the manager! He put on The Grand Illusion. It was amazing. Anyway we left California a few days later. But I never forgot how great that album was. Perhaps I got to it later than most as that was 1977. Still this is pretty cool, never was much on adding orchestration to a song, I like the raw stuff, but this sounds great.

There was a single moment in 1986 when one of my guitars
made a bond between me and one of my nephew's father and his uncle.
I just happened to show up with my brand-new Fender Malibu at an
ad-lib party, and those guys took my Fender and their own Gibson dreadnaught
and covered "Crystal Ball", unplugged style and did it so well that I almost gave them
    my guitar.
I almost didn't want to sully it with my own weak efforts.

Hey there Fil, Really loving the channel and your awesome analysis of so many great musicians and songs. With Styx being one of my favorites growing up in the 70s and 80s, I've always felt Tommy Shaw didn't get proper recognition for his exceptional guitar playing , especially multitasking with his singing. I wanted to ask if you would do a video with Tommy performing Crystal Ball live. In regards to learning the song myself on 6 and 12 string guitar, I'm discovering the arpeggiated parts at the start of the song to be more complex than it initially sounds . Again, great channel and content, rock-on,... Cheers 🎸

Just imagine Fil walking into the wrong room and these guys just start playing like this - would be Fil's ultimate trauma room experience!

    This is great!!
Fil, have a go at The Tremeloes “Doing Their Thing” Live 1970 (whole show).
Four superb musicians, all lead singers, Rick Westwood as fine a guitarist as you’ll get. It’s not Rory at Montreux, but it’s incredibly good. At 13.50 you’ll have some of the finest live harmonies. RIP Dave Munden.
