- This is a brief overview of how to prepare a commercially dried insect specimen for photography - it is different and a bit more complicated than just re-wetting a caught bug, but very useful if you ever buy some bugs form one of the online vendors.
This is the link to the Livestream "Mastering Macro", this Tuesday (tonight), and every Tuesday, at 8PM Central Time - • Video

When in the studio I use the Nikon D850 as my main camera - amzn.to/3zEznWK
My primary video lens is a 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom - amzn.to/3zzaoUy
My main focus stacking body is a Nikon D7500 - amzn.to/371KoFe
A Nikon D3400 is for emergencies - amzn.to/3xbwXgu
A Fujifilm XT-2, with a battery grip, is my main microscope camera but also does duty as a livestream back up camera - amzn.to/3l3Agnw
My studio lights are a combination of Sutefoto, Small Rig, Weeylite, and Neewer panels (LED) - they are all really very good, and I have a number of other, smaller LED devices for photography- amzn.to/2Wk8Xel
I use Audio Technica shotgun microphones in the studio, - amzn.to/3iQLNnv
but I also have a Pro Caster from Australian mic-maker Rode - amzn.to/3rDPqkx
who also make my DSLR microphone - amzn.to/3iTxfU6
and my wireless microphone system - amzn.to/371C8oD
I record all my sound separately onto the awesome Zoom H5 Digital Audio Recorder. - amzn.to/3BM8aTG
I capture video and stills for my videos using an iPhone 12 Max, and a GoPro Hero 8 Black, complete with the Media Mod for on the go video - amzn.to/2UScm3J & amzn.to/3l3Desa
I use Adobe software for almost everything, because it is good and the support is fantastic. I am an outspoken fan of Zerene Stacker, and for anyone who thinks I must be a Zerene employee to speak of it in such glowing terms and to recommend it so unconditionally, I am not. It is just the only complete professional macro focus stacking software program on the market. It is in a class of its own.
That is just some of the stuff I use - if you have any questions about my macro gear, or my recording equipment, just ask.
All my audio, music and sound effects come from Epidemic Sound - I have been with them for about 3 years and they are pretty awesome - www.epidemicsound.com
Unless I state differently, all the photography you see on my channel, in my videos and on my website, was done by me. I tell you that so that you know I would never blame another photographer for my photographic mediocrity. But I love taking pictures, so I do.

I am a young woman who is infatuated with the natural world and, especially, insects. To most people in my community, my interests make me come off as strange and unusual, almost novel, and it can be hard to find a sense of belonging when this is such an important part of my character. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and pass it on to the next generation. It is comforting to be reminded that this is a practice people have found peace in long before me and that my love for it is not anomalous but an extension of the past.
Excellent explanation, as always. Congratulations.
I just used the pin bending trick just now. Spectacular result and saved a lot of pins. Thank you Allan.
I am very happy to see that you are back to teaching Allan. I know I made a grumpy comment on one of your videos recently. I was feeling very frustrated that you seemed to be locked into reviewing mode. This video is exactly what I needed. Even if it's something I already know about or it's a subject you've covered before I really enjoy the videos where you are teaching and sharing. Hopefully more content like this is on the way. Oh...and sorry about the grumpy comment. Comes with old age I think. Well, at least you always hear "grumpy old man". Must be something in it.
🎉 I am now beginning to do do bugs . I have a bug catching gadget Love it
Thanks Allan for sharing your knowledge.
What should I do to prevent mold in the chamber?
You are an inspiration, thank you.
Nice Video !!!
My question is
What do you use to dispatch the insects?
How dare you kill any insect or even buy insects and encourage that trade. Just for a photograph. A relaxed insect is one alive that's not met you.
Yeah....I was like wait a second this isn't the video I was looking for
