I don't know if it's still a thing nowadays but Sea Turtles and Manatee were still eaten in parts of the Caribbean in the 1970s and 80s. Turtle steak tastes great. Manatee is literally sea pork. Growing up in a third world country is a little bit like being a pirate. I hope my parents didn't endangered too many species for the sake of my nutrition.
our grandparents were survivors. I saw a funny looking bird out the barn one winter and asked grandpa what is was: Why that's a prairie chicken , he said. How come I just saw one? Cause thems good eaten and we ate em all!!
Sheogorath shouting cheese randomly is welcome and brings a smile to my face. I came across a pirate themed shop in a recent holiday... it was more pyrite than pirate and even that's a too kind. Edit: coconut and baboon sounds like an interesting meal.

The Atlatl relies on the spear/arrow being made of green (not dried) hardwoods or softwood. European harpoons were usually made of what they had in abundance, so lots of white oak, ash, chestnut, etc... Which dont work very well with the atlatl once dry, which surprisingly happens very quickly on a ship, or realistically by the time the ship is underway. I do think making smaller harpoons out of yew could work very well, but we'll probably never know, I suppose.

4:40 Why was cheese not available in the Caribbean? Honest question. Was it not possible to make because of the climate? Edit: 12:20 hah, funny you should mention that. Planning a Pirates of the Spanish Main game is what got me back into pirates in the first place, and what led me to find your channel.
The main reason is because the European breeds of dairy cattle didn't do so well in the high heat, usually getting sick or just massively reducing their efficiency
Green turtles were almost completely fished out by the English. This is where the dish MOCK turtle soup came from..it was invented with pig meat scraps and skins to replace green turtle meat that became illegal to fish due to possible extinction
I love when people say that "the (Cat Turtle) meat tastes just like chicken or just like beef" Well then why instead of eating turtles don't I just eat chicken or beef?
What about incense? In ancient times it was worth as much as gold because of how deserate people were to get away from all of the stink of no soap and deodorant. I never hear of anyone discussing whether or not pirates had any use/value for it due to none of them having deodorant with 100 men crowded onto a ship built for 30. Sorry for it being a bit off-topic from the vid.
a aquaintance of mine once boarded a chinese wooden fishing vessel on a smugling patroll of the coast of indonesia. he said the interior was smelling extreamly strong of a mix of fish and incense
Actually animal organs and tongues are actually the most delicious part of the animal, and also, why, just why did they eat cats, the more I learn the more horrified I get, they ate penguins, dolphins, cute birbs, and even cats.
my grandma was a child durning the hunger winter in 1945. she ate cat as well said that unlike dog which was dilicious not even starving could make cat palatable however hunger makes people wat anything cats dogs birds crewmates

If some theories are to be believed, early European explorers of the Americas did far worse to manatees than eat them.
Most likely not.
our grandparents were survivors. I saw a funny looking bird out the barn one winter and asked grandpa what is was: Why that's a prairie chicken , he said. How come I just saw one? Cause thems good eaten and we ate em all!!
Probably not manatee since they were endangered until very recently
Nah your good the stuff they say is endangered is just because rich people don’t want the poors to eat them all 😂
Just as you said "For all those insufferable cat owners out there," my cat peed on the floor.

Yes
It really was a magical age back then. I mean, it’s such a fantastical image to see groups of humans having to tip and hunt massive turtles!
Reef shark makes a fine meal! Catch a four to five footer and section the tail into thick steaks, grill with lemon, and black pepper!
So basically shark seviche
at least you consumed the flesh.

Flamingo tongue was also considered a Roman delicacy wasn't it?
yeah
I could imagine a pirate who's starving on board a ship and his cat brings him a dead rat he would probably eat it
If he can fight the cat for it lol
Can't wait!
Obsession with food is not totally absent from pirate literature, monkey d luffy is constantly concerned about where he will get meat from next

I heard when pirates ran out of food out of desperation they would boil leather then beat it so they could eat it.

You got to soak it, simmer it for hours before you can eat it.

whoah dude...
Cannabis only occured in Hindu Kush historically. Maybe Arab Bengal pirates.
Not weed... They were huge on crack and crystal meth tho. They would smoke it out of light bulbs as crack pipes weren't invented yet
