Generations of hardy men ate hard tack simply because there was nothing else.
On the SS Britain, they even served it to the second class passengers and also to the crew.

Open a can of peaches and put them in your canteen cup. Put your hardtack on top. Cover with the metal canteen cup cover. Place it near the coals of your dying fire before going to bed. Next morning, enjoy your peach cobbler for breakfast.

Flour, suet and water. What you are describing there my friend are dumplings, they are still very popular here in the UK, and are really nice. I normally make them with stew, you use twice as much flour as suet, and a small amount of water, just enough to make a dough, then roll them in to balls, and put them on top of the stew for the last 20-30 minutes, and cover the pan with a lid. The dumplings just cook from the steam off the stew. They are beautifully light and bready, if you do them right, really nice with stew, think of them like Americans would think of biscuits. Although you can just cook them in boiling water, or steam them over a bamboo steamer, and they are just as nice with jam, treacle or syrup. Edit, I paused the video to make this comment, so I hadn't got to the bit where you talk about doughballs, yup that's exactly what I am describing above, they call them, doughballs in Scotland and Dumplings in England.

My mother made chicken n' dumplings - my father ADORED this dish. As you say, a little flour, some grease and salt. The poorest household could afford the dumplings. The meat could be chicken, squirrel, rabbit or grouse. We grew up poor and scratched out a living on the land. We worked together as a family. Nowadays, people don't even understand what that means.

The life of a pirate calls to me. If I would have been born in this time I have no doubt I would have been on one of these ships. In this life I guess I’m more of a gypsy. Almost no possessions outside of survival gear, and live in a moveable Army tent. Almost all of my food is cooked over fire. Maybe I’ll bring back the pirate trend. I don’t have anything else to do this week😆
