  • The United States is the only developed country where maternal mortality is rising. A recent analysis of delivery hospitalizations and postpartum readmissions in the U.S. found that 23% of in-hospital deaths were related to sepsis. It is the body's life-threatening response to an infection.
In this educational video, Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist, Margie Bridges DNP, ARNP, RNC, and Melissa Bauer, DO, a Maternal Sepsis Researcher and Associate Professor at Duke University, discuss the signs and symptoms of maternal sepsis and the challenges of diagnosing and treating sepsis in pregnant women and women who have recently given birth.

I had this after the birth of my son. 😭 Thanks to my mum, by the time i left the hospital which was 9 days after - she knew basically every dr/surgeon/nurse && midwife that ever walked in my room. Forever grateful for each and everyone who stood at my bedside && help me through! 💛

My baby died and i had to be induced in the 2nd trimester. Less than an hour after delivery i deteriorated quickly to a fever of 105.7 i will never know if my baby died because i had sepsis or if sepsis was part of delivery. For 5 hrs i was extremely critical with no lower detectable blood pressure. I had double pneumonia. They need more research on this.

Thank you for all your wonderful informative videos!! I was pregnant with my third child and just gave birth to her November 17th. Before I gave birth to her I got Celulitis on my bottom right leg. I was very very hot and had chills and my right leg was swollen and beet red. I went to the hospital and was sent home with antibiotics. After I had her about a month later in the same spot where the cellulitis was before it came back. I tried letting it go I was extremely hot but couldn't seem to get warm at all I had a fever of 101 and I felt so tired. But I still didn't want to go to the hospital. My husband finally made me go to the hospital. They did all this blood work on me but it wasn't sepsis supposedly. It was the cellulitis again. I was put back on antibiotics again and sent home after 2 days of being there. It went away finally but I'm having concerns. Where I had the infection at on my lower right leg it's still a bit more swollen from my other leg. It's not hot to the touch and I'm not having any fever or any chills like I did before. It's just swollen. What should I do about this situation? Should I go back to the hospital? It's not painful by any means and I'm not feeling sick at all. Its just swollen. No redness. I'm not sure what I should do. Can you guys please suggest what I should do? Thank you so much!

I think you should go back to the hospital to get it checked
