That’s a juvenile bluefin. Still a great catch with a speargun. Bluefins get to be well over 1000 lbs. world record is 1496. Caught right in my backyard. We catch fish over 1000 lbs here every year.
Amazing video. I’ve never been spear fishing but I fish often and I’m always studying their behaviors and patterns. Right when I saw that fish moving slower than the group and out of formation I immediately thought “Shoot that one!” and he did just that. Amazing how that translates. I could never spear fish, these guys are badass!
No hate. It's a nice fish. But still on the smaller side for a blue fin. Big ones I'd say start about 700-800 pounds. We see them on the regular here in the 800-1200 pound range.
It's the absolute pinnacle of spearfishing achievement to find, shoot and land a tuna, moreso bluefin tuna. Big gamefish, top table fish. Spearing a tuna over 350 kg would not be worthwhile, lost gear and lost injured fish. RMY
I use to have a 25 Wellcraft, w twin 150s, before the era of massively overpowering boats! Was out by myself, striper fishing, off the beach, at Sea Side, when guys start yelling. I turn around, and school of tuna, come through, jumping out of the water! Started casting to them, as they were in range, then realized what i was doing, and just started laughing out loud! These were 2, 3 hundred # fish, min., the best i could have hoped for, was to lose all my line!!!
How much is that worth in Japan? if im not mistaken i would guess over $10,000 American money but if im wrong i do know blue fin tuna is VERY VALUABLE in that region!
Yellowfin tuna have a bright yellow second dorsal fin and a clear yellow lateral line above their pectoral fin. Bluefin tuna have a second dorsal fin that is a mixture of gray and yellow, and their underside is silver with uneven lines. Bluefin tuna also have a dark blue tail, while yellowfin tuna have a yellow-and-gray tail.
To me, it’s priceless. You would need a commercial license to sell bluefin. These younger fish aren’t as fatty as the ones they get on the east coast so they aren’t worth as much, but it would easily be worth a few thousand dollars
@craigullman6129 I thought the same thing. There is a Pacific bluefin tuna, and it has a much farther range , they can be caught off the California coast . They look like yellow tail
Bluefin fishing and spearing is a huge industry in SoCal…. I’m sure all the massive bluefin in Nova Scotia and New England would disagree with your equator comment too…
Tuna fishing shows like wicked tuna are about as realistic as keeping up with the Kardashians. It is, however, illegal to use a speargun for bluefin tuna on the East Coast of the United States. This video was filmed in California, where it is legal to spear bluefin.
Unfortunately, we do not have a commercial license so we cannot sell these fish. If we were to buy the amount of meat we harvested it would be thousands and thousands of dollars!
Did anyone notice that it was not a blue fin tuna, but a yellow fin. Please check the difference. I know that for sure!
Not quite! 100% a BFT.

Watch the full video! We were told to “shoot the fish that wants to be shot”, glad you could see that this was the one!
That's dinner for sure...or even a lot of sashimi. Great job!!
Thank you! It was great!
My friend stuck one to big. His 1st one ever learned a valuable lesson.
Ever jump in there and see some big sharks chasing them tuna? You got big balls my friend 👍💪✌️
That is not a bluefin.. thats definitely a yellowfin.. correct me if Im wrong
Smaller bluefin look like yellowfin, but this was 100% a BFT
U r being corrected Mr. @user😂
It appears you stuck it in the perfect place right through the eyeball
How can you do this? Don’t it have to be over a certain size? Or is that just for commercial fishing
Those regulations are for the Atlantic. No size requirement in California
Hey, it's not a million dollar fish, but still 10's of thousands. Nice
How do you keep them from running the line out? Do you always try to get a fatal shot?
Line is attached to a float, the big ones take the float down for a few minutes! Fatal shots are always preferred.
That's definitely a beautiful shoot and fish 🐠🐟🎣😅😅😅.....but why does it look like them motors are still running 😮😮😮😮
We had just taken it out of gear and were cruising into the school
Because they are..they are in neutral
The tax man’s always watching

Yep they get over 1000lbs, usually illegal to spear them in the areas the big ones are though. In SoCal 100+ lbs is a good size!
That's a helluva fish with a spear gun
Thing is the bigger fish because of the money go to Japan
@@ar-sithf.austin3744 indeed is. I'm not saying I shoot 100+ kg on a regular basis. Just once in blue moon :-)
This is not a Bluefin !
Great tuna well done
If thats a small one then apparently i caught a bunch of babies on nmy first charter 😅 it was all very good eating
There's all different kinds/sizes tuna. He just got the biggest of the species. Heckuva fish on a speargun. Heckuva of fish period.
I’d be like bro can you put it in neutral first.
Edit: Maybe it is,I didn’t notice the wake the boat was pushing at first.

Nothing. Unless you have a commercial license. Like the purse seiners. They're not the fish sold in Japanese auctions.
Looks like a yellowfin tuna. Especially out of San Diego

Been catching BFT in much larger numbers than YFT in recent years. Much larger fish too. Cows and Super Cows are fairly common.
Little close to the prop there
Awesome, but it’s more fun and challenging on rod and reel.

To get in the water!
