It's funny because the first time watching the film when you don't know the ending you are suspicious of Dave's silence because you think he killed her. Watching it through the second time you realize that Dave really is just trying to be a friend, letting Sean Penn pour his guts out without interrupting. It's a clever trick of filmmaking and acting that can totally mislead the viewer about what's going on in a character's head if they don't have the full picture.
I've seen many many amazing performances in movies. But Sean Penn's performance for this movie can be easily in my top 5. I've never seen an actor showing this amount of pain and mourn in any other movie, with such conviction. Ellen Burnstyn did something similar in Requiem For A Dream. I recommend it.
He was great. But I think Mickey Rourke in the Pledge is better. His scene is only 2 min and it’s very similar to this scene. Penn directed the Pledge and I think he really took from Rourkes acting.
@@hineighbor nah no one should go before their parents I know it sucks but people learn to live without them I've spoken to people who've lost kids and they are in perpetual hell
@@hineighbor If you die before your parents you will ruin their lives. They won't recover from your loss. I know nobody wants to lose their parents, but do you want them to lose you?
@@hineighbor Don't say that. My Mom lost her son (my older brother) and it tore her apart. I used to think that I missed him more than her because he was my best friend, but now that I'm a father, I finally realize why it hurt her more. Nobody should have to bury their child.
This scene has really become my favourite in the movie after watching it a few times. The silence from Dave just trying to support his friend - the most badass gangster around breaking down and opening up to his friend. Then knowing what comes next between them. This scene and their last scene together is such a crazy parallel… such a difference. Both acted beautifully. Love this movie.
RIP Dave bro , real sad for him to die , he molested as a child, his son was so sad going thru parade with no dad , rip the good die bruh , such an amazing movie
Sean Penn. You are my hero. And so is Denis Lehann. This is really my "go to" scene whenever I'm feeling leery. You have inspired millions of people man. And so did Tim Robbins. Just wanted to give a shout out. This is cinema at its best.
Beautifully written👏👏👏❤my friend, I also love Sean Penn, he's an incredible actor and a beautiful person😘😘!!! I also love Tim Robbins, he's phenomenal and a beautiful person as well😘😘!!! This movie is DEFINITELY one of my favorites💞🥰😥!!!
Go back and watch the scene when Jimmy finds out his daughter is dead. Yes, it makes that powerful scene more impactful. Mystic River really drains everything out of you. This film is so visceral in it's story telling and character development. It's a film I can't watch a lot. It's just too heart breaking.
I just watched this film and after this scene I said to myself that Sean Penn should’ve won an Oscar for this Film! And then I checked and yeah I’m so dumb to not know that he really did won an Academy for this! This is so dope!
Kevin Moreno oh yeah, was that on the same year as this. wow it was so tough. i just saw that movie to. Bill Murray is gold! Idk maybe the Academy like more of like an "acting" acting method (like DDL style of acting) than the naturalistic type of acting (Ethan Hawke's style of acting) .
One more time. Its always those words that hurt me the most. Cause what do we want, more than anything after losing someone? To see them. Touch them, hug them just One More Time....
I wish we'd have seen more of that father-daughter relationship. I bet Katie was his favourite child, his weakness and it makes sense... at one point they were on their own and they only had each other.
Here's how it goes and should always go. I totally hate this man's political views and what he basically stands for. But , 10 times out of 10 I will always watch whatever movie he is in bc he is such a great actor. This country needs a refreshment on what tolerance is bc both parties are literally dividing this country, and any day now it could blow up.
Adam chewy well, I love his great grrat acting and his views. Thank you Sean Penn for your great acting and the care you show for our country by speaking out when others are afraid to. . Thank you for going to Haiti and New Orleans and through your labor, helping those people in that were in dire need of emergency care. That’s what a true good person does.
@@edithcarter3554 keep your mouth shut Karen. You wrote that 4 years ago, how do you feel about the current state of our country ? Pretty sad huh ? Yeah u can keep your mouth shut now.
You have to be emotionally prepared to see this movie I wasn't when I saw it in my late teens and it haunted me to the bone that I can't bring myself to watch it for quite a while but I'm getting the courage to watch it again.
It's worth noting that, in the hands of lessor actors or a lessor director, this scene would not have been nearly as powerful. There's a real risk of melodrama here but they don't play the scene for sympathy. They have the skill and confidence to let it be truly raw in the way real loss is.
As great as Sean is in this scene, you should all check out the scene from the movie The Pledge (2001) that features Mickey Rourke. Sean directed that film and Rourke's 2 minute cameo is breathtakingly good. So good, and so memorable that when I saw Mystic River and this scene came up I immediately thought: holy crap! Sean's stealing from Mickey!!!
I shouldn't watch this movie as my,19 yo daughter died 3 days after her birthday a week ago Im looking for someone to go after. Not a good idea as a father.let yo know how it turns out unless im im custody?
Does Sean Penn mean that his character cannot cry for the daughter or that he, the actor can't cry in this scene with the director observing? Very confusing here.
Shock. Shock comes in first. Then anger follows. If you drink hard liquor during that anger and pain stage you are not going to get past it. You must keep sober through some of the worst pain as your heart is ripping inside your body. Your heart actually feels like it is going completely rip apart and then all of a sudden something changes. It must be some physiological mechanism to protect yourself. A melancholy sadness follows that has more stillness to it. Grief is a process. And grief through tragedy is an even more acute process. I have had multiple tragedies in my family where you actually think your family is cursed. For Jimmy, he couldn't look vulnerable. But with Dave he knew Dave was vulnerable and probably always felt a guilt to him. He actually released his guilt by sharing his most honest and interment moment with him.
It's funny because the first time watching the film when you don't know the ending you are suspicious of Dave's silence because you think he killed her. Watching it through the second time you realize that Dave really is just trying to be a friend, letting Sean Penn pour his guts out without interrupting. Amazing how both of them won the Oscars for their performance in this film
Has to be some kind of a record
I didn't even know that
They both deserved it.
I didn’t know both won. Wow!
I knew Sean Penn won the Oscar I didn't know Tim Robbins won an Oscar for his performance too. Thanks man
Hands down, one of the best performances in film history.
It's pretty good, but Depp should have won that Oscar.
Sean Penn really owns every scene

Truly a masterpiece of acting, directing, and screenplay
Sean Penn is one of the greatest actor of all Time

Greatest of all Sean Scenes. Guy's phenominal, and Il put Mystic River in my Top 5.
His best film by far.
Because he is Sean Penn
Sean Penn earned this Oscar. He gave a masterclass of acting.
Depp deserved it more for Jack Sparrow.

When it comes to men crying over daughters Mickey Rourke's little seen in The Pledge still knocks it out the park for me.
That movie was directed by Sean Penn.
Pacino in Godfather 3 for me
That movie has alright and the actress who played his daughter was awful
