to be clear these are not remasters. Every track on this album was re-recorded by Jeff Lynne and accompanied by mostly himself playing all the instruments. He is a genius of course.
This version sounds more punchy and crisp than the other one. But the original sounds richer and more spacious whereas this version sounds like every instrument is tightly put on top of each other. There's simply more clarity on the original. However, the rhythm on this version is much better to me. It just sounds livelier. On the original, the rhythm sounds kind of limp and isn't quite as catchy as this one. The original or this one, you can't go wrong with either. It's a great song regardless!
@@atomiccritter6492 You have no right to say which one is better. You can prefer the original for the cinematic ending, but it doesn't make it better. The original was one part of a 4-part 'concerto' in Out of the Blue; consisting of Standin' in the Rain, Big Wheels, Summer and Lightning and Mr Blue Sky, that's why it had the big operatic ending. Whereas this one is a standalone song, and it doesn't need it. Furthermore, both of them were written and produced by Jeff Lynne several decades apart, so to say one is better than the other doesn't matter. But you can have a favourite.
This one just sounds more sterile to me. The strings are fake and lower in the mix to disguise the fact. It’s still a very good facsimile but it all sounds like a sequencer perfectly synchronised and lifeless.
Welp... After listening to the original for so long... I'll be one of the first to admit that I like this more. The tacked on end bit always ruined the happy mood the song put me in. This one makes me feel better, and lets me stay that way.

Jeff Lynne is just pure genius... wow man... just so awesome. Listened to this song literally thousands of times over 30+ years. This version is a very fine remake. Hats off to you Mr. Lynne.
This sound is so much crisper and cleaner. I don't know which one I prefer to be honest. I think the vocals stand out way more and feel a bit more separated. But, everything seems so much more precise and this seems to fit the feel of the song more than the original. The original was more tight knit which has its own advantages. I guess I'll just have to keep listening to both :)
This remastered version really brings out some of the small intricacies of the song. It feels warmer--even the distorted, metallic bits. So in that sense, it's more of a "blue sky" song--bright and sunny. However, I like the old version just as well. It's just a great song.
Isn't it incredible than even himself with modern technology was unable to make the track sound as good as he did back in 1977, especially the doubled vocals. There's something in the thickness and smoothness of the vintage analog era that is unrivalled. Sounds were melding together to become one ; forming a smooth and compact musical body. I've yet to hear anything like that nowadays, the mystery lives on.
Immediately I perceive the intro to be less crucially staccato during this part 0:12That was always something that grabbed my particular attention (and approval) in the original version. I wondered how they got the micro-silences between the beats so delightfully clean. I considered how they might have even swapped-in (spliced-in) a tiny sliver of blank tape to guarantee a dead perfect and striking staccato effect between beats. ...Anyway somehow, the staccato punches seem more perfectly divided/clean in the original.
In my opinion this is probably the best song of all time, yes it's not better than Bohemian rhapsody but this song is extremely nostalgic and holds such a special place in my heart, what a great song
You can tell Mr Lynn’s growth in production. This one is much more polished and tight. The original has wider stereo separation and more “air”. I always thought ELO from 70s production sounds a bit tinny and this version corrects that. I’m going to agree with Mr Lynn that this one sounds “better”. Who am I to argue with a living legend? 😃
if you are to listen to mister blue sky on its own this is great, the original works perfectly at the end of thee concerto and with the rest of the album's feel
Two versions of this song is great in its own way, the original has more of a summer tone and living in the moment while the 2012 version feelsmlike looking back at those moments while living a new moment.
I think this version sounds clearer than the original but overall it gave me the "now older and with children" feel. Not that I'm older and with children myself, but yes
I feel as if both this and the original are both equally enjoyable in their own regards. While I personally favor this over the original, I still enjoy the original, just in a different way from how I enjoy this.
I'm a long time ELO fan (the biggest, most defining musical moment in my entire life is about this very song), and I have to say that the original is clearly better. This one is not bad by any stretch, and would be awesome as a cleaned-up live recording, but there are a few things that make the original (especially if you have Jeff Lynne's re-mastered version of Out Of The Blue) more rewarding. One, the orchestral ending. I love the "2nd half" of the song with the long instrumental passage, choral vocals, etc. This was the kind of rock n' roll you could do in the 70's and 80's, but no one would have the balls to do it now in the 21st century (including, apparently, Jeff himself [sorry!]). The short-attention-span crowd would hit skip-forward to the next playlist track, with its 3:00 quick hit, the moment the rhythm groove and choral voices started. Two, the part beginning "Hey there Mr. Blue..." This simply sounds better in the original, and that's all I need say. And three, this version sounds compressed and lacks the wide-open spacial breadth of the original. I like ELO's recent concerts such as the Zoom tour and Live in Hyde Park, and those live versions of this song have a more open, free-breathing feel than this. So, although this rerecording sounds, um, fine, it really isn't an improvement, and therefore ultimately fails. Sorry, but I'll keep listening to the original CD and Jeff's re-master of Out Of The Blue, which just never gets old.
I get a kind of euphoria from listening to the original. The remake just doesn't give that to me. Interesting remake but give me the original anyday. Plus I love the melancholy ending with the suggestion to 'Please turn me over'.
I have to say, I still sorta prefer the original, again who wouldn't? Yet I think this is a very nice re-vamp for this song, breathing new life into it.
I love both versions. This one has higher sound quality but the original gives me nostalgia. I never liked the extended ending though, so this one is good when it comes to this one.
Jeff Lynne was frustrated when recording the original of this that the technique of the time limited the ability to record the song in the way he inteded it to, hence the rerecording. Frankly there are plenty artists who would have fared well with modern equipment that make recording so easy nowadays. Imagine Gucci Gang rerecorded 40 years from now.. Man that must blow minds.
