CLIP DESCRIPTION:
E.T. elevates the bicycle and takes Elliott (Henry Thomas) on a ride through the nighttime sky.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Both a classic movie for kids and a remarkable portrait of childhood, E.T. is a sci-fi adventure that captures that strange moment in youth when the world is a place of mysterious possibilities (some wonderful, some awful), and the universe seems somehow separate from the one inhabited by grown-ups. Henry Thomas plays Elliott, a young boy living with his single mother (Dee Wallace), his older brother Michael (Robert MacNaughton), and his younger sister Gertie (Drew Barrymore). Elliott often seems lonely and out of sorts, lost in his own world. One day, while looking for something in the back yard, he senses something mysterious in the woods watching him. And he's right: an alien spacecraft on a scientific mission mistakenly left behind an aging botanist who isn't sure how to get home. Eventually Elliott puts his fears aside and makes contact with the "little squashy guy," perhaps the least threatening alien invader ever to hit a movie screen. As Elliott tries to keep the alien under wraps and help him figure out a way to get home, he discovers that the creature can communicate with him telepathically. Soon they begin to learn from each other, and Elliott becomes braver and less threatened by life. E.T. rigs up a communication device from junk he finds around the house, but no one knows if he'll be rescued before a group of government scientists gets hold of him. In 2002, Steven Spielberg re-released E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial in a revised edition, with several deleted scenes restored and digitally refurbished special effects.

That shot of the moon with the silhouette of the boy, an alien, riding a bike in midair........
just........ICONIC, and dare I say, one of the most recognizable movie images in history.
uncensorer I agree with you.
uncensorer But how is the moon appearing so large?
uncensorer totally agree! :) similar to when I see a rising sun image, it makes me want to sing the beginning of The Circle of Life haha :)
No question man. Luke in front of the sunset, Travis Bickle in the mirror, Jack and Rose at the front of Titanic, the mother silhouette in the shower, E.T. and Elliot flying over the moon. Just some of the most iconic movie images of all time. If I missed any feel free to add.
Travis Bickle with a trigger hand in his head, Jack Torrance's face in the door
the music in this movie is beyond what any other modern composer can pull off. absolutely immaculate.
John Williams same composer as all the star wars movies. In fact ,you can even feel a touch of the same flow in the last jedi as they run on the beach on that animal thing and the same moon imagery. Although the music for that part in the last Jedi makes me think a bit more of return to the future.. maybe it was a not to Alan Silvestri.
I went out and bought everything E.T. related that I could get my hands on. This was the first soundtrack to a movie that I ever owned.
Hans Zimmer would have ruined this masterpiece with his repetitive noise. John Williams dominates.
@@JessicaChastainFan Williams is certainly in a different league to Zimmer but I doubt Zimmer would have done his repetitive ostinato style of music for this. That’s a hallmark of his more recent work. In the 90s his scores were more tuneful. His themes in the Lion King are beautiful, powerful and numerous. Not close to ET but still fantastic in their own right. I suspect he would have provided an effective and tuneful score.
Its John Williams could we expect anything less than immaculate and absolutely perfect!! The best composer of movie scores period!!
John Williams is the best composer of all time every time I watch this scene I tear up.
What about Hans Zimmer
He ripped this off the Krull Main Theme by James Horner, running time 3:08 to 3:20
Honestly, aside from that there is an octave jump--which is absolutely a super-incredibly-laughably-amazingly common thing in music to the point where it's hard to find a piece that doesn't use one SOMEWHERE in it--and that octave jump is on the strings, there's little resemblance at all. Please refrain from knee-jerk statements of "PLAGIARISM PLAGIARISM OMG OMG" without actually, you know, LISTENING CLOSELY and comparing. Or better yet, get a music theory education and see just how much literally every composer ever has been ripping off every other composer ever because they all use the same basic elements of music established centuries ago.
@@stephensutton5321 Google "James Horner plagiarism".
@@theamazingandtalentedblake8296 Many film score enthusiasts actually hate Zimmer.
Elliot: "We'll have to walk from here!"

Definitely.

I miss when Movies used to be like this :(
I feel like the iconicness of the scene comes from the feeling of freedom. It’s magical and the world is kind of their oyster at this moment. They’re out at night when they aren’t supposed to be and they’re roaming the woods freely. Just makes you feel…alive and good at the same time cause they’re on a mission. It’s the ultimate adventure.
God Henry's acting in this scene is mesmerizing. His facial expressions are so amazing and the moment yells, "Ah Ha!" is so perfect
And poignant too because it’s the happiest he’s been in a long time. Ever since his dad left he’s had a pretty unhappy life. Flying in the sky with E.T. is pure joy for him.

Elliott and E.T. Across the moon such a memorable image
Probably the most iconic picture in movie cinema history
Amblin Entertainment logo ^^
If that isn’t the most iconic thing ever then you’re wrong, you’re an idiot, you don’t deserve love, you are a waste.
Iconic image
And it was used as a logo after that
I saw this film at a sneak preview. No one had a clue what to expect. When Elliot soars off the cliff, it was the most joyous reaction of an audience I've ever heard!

The most iconic scene in film history.
1:08 Amblin Entertainment found its own logo.

Scene flying in the moon is epic and cool
1:08 epic moment
Dude. That would have been awesome, if they could just leave Elliott's Cape on in the original version.
Saw it from jurassic park
This is the only film to ever make me cry both tears of joy and tears of sorrow. Spielberg’s story, Williams’ score, and the fantastic performances by the cast make this a true masterpiece. Everyone should see this movie.
1:08 That shot, though! Absolutely wonderful.
Absolutely one of the most iconic moments in cinema history.
It's the Amblin Entertainment logo.
dkelly26666 I think it has some kind of parallel with the binary sunset in Star Wars.
They even added the cape accordingly to it while the original does not.
@@Naminski1a MIB four films columbia pictures
1:08 the most magical shot in any movie, anywhere, period.
Lily Luna That shot from Jurassic Park, when we see the dinosaur for the first time, is absolutely heart-stopping.
This scene alone makes me want to go to Universal and ride E.T. Adventure
Unfortunately it was taken down long ago and replaced with The Mummy.
That was King Kong. E.T. is still alive and well at Universal Studios
Thanks to Spielberg, it will stay there. Love it!
Eric Andrade The Florida is still there so great!
The E.T ride at Universal was great! I rode it in March 2012, and I still remember it pretty well. If you still haven't rode it, just know that the waiting time is LONG. When I rode it, I had to wait 1 - 1.5 hours.
This has to be on of the greatest movie moments ever. The music, the flying . . . everything about this scene is simply perfect.
they dont make them like this anymore
I totally agree but don't worry man....I am certain a shitty remake or an unnecessary, cash grabbing sequel is on the way.
I know. not even the wizardly Mr.Spielberg :-(
Yep. Movies like this makes me wish it was still the 1980's... :)
***** I hear you - but for me at least, that special something has disappeared from some of his films. The magic has gone. I still think he's one of the World's greatest living film Director's, but mainly because of his amazing and wonderful "back catalogue" of films. The sense of wonder has vanished.
That's because movies have to withstand the test of time before they become classics.
A Spielberg- Williams epic
Urry Clark Film Pure genius!!!
This is the penultimate collaboration between a film director and music composer. Just perfect. *wipes tears away every time*
What do you think penultimate means
Kolderman: you meant to say "ultimate", didn't you??
You mean ultimate
John Williams music is really what makes this scene magic. There is very little dialog so it is indeed the music that is driving this scene. Turn down the volume and watch it and you will see that it loses 90% of it's intensity.
John Williams won the academy award for this score .It was well deserved.
The boy the bike and the moon. Has to be one of the most epic iconic shots ever put on film. Spielberg is amazing
the music alone from this scene gives me chills
This scene is pure magic and no other movie can beat it for me!And Elliott's laugh After he passes the moon is hilarious! If I was him I would feel like the luckiest kid in the world!😊
Without John Williams music this scene would be nothing.
Don't think that's necessarily true. It's the combination of image and music that makes E.t. great. Spielberg and Williams were made to work together.
It would be good, but the score made it perfect.
How did Williams come up with this score?? Cinema magic at it's finest.
Without the music, the scene would be great. It's literally one of the most iconic shots in cinema history. The music is just a cherry on top
It would lose about 85% of it's emotional power.
the most iconic scene in movie history
+BIGG91732 I agree! Not far behind is the scene when Marty goes back to 1985 with the clock tower getting struck by lightning.
+sportsygirl8 Don't forget the "I am your father" scene from Empire Strikes Back.
***** Exactly! We could go on and on about so many great iconic scenes.
and the shower scene from psycho
lol
Steven Spielberg was actually against the use of using CGI and recommends only watching the 1982 version. I could see why he would say that, Universal should have left the film alone.
I totally agree with you because I hate it when they put cgi effects into a great movie that originally had only practical effects. It also sucks because I actually grew up with the 2002 version with the cgi effects.
+irwinisidro I think the reason why they added the cape is because it looks EXACTLY like the Amblin logo.
irwinisidro didn't all they add in is the cape
Leslie Stovall No, they also changed ET's face to smiling, and in the original they just kept riding off the cliff, in this they fall and then fly back up. Also some minor score changes I think.
I agree 100%, E.T. already looked realistic, especially for the time it was made. There was literally no point in computerising over the top of him and achieve nothing but make him look less realistic.
Music apart, the thing I prefer on this scene is Eliott being so scared on the beginning, and then he's yelling far above the trees, facing the moon on a cloudless night, like a victory scream. He doesn't even think about the danger anymore, he's a kid enjoying something like a kid, and that makes the whole scene so much more interesting and cool.
Truly a magical scene it never gets old, in fact I feel younger every time I see it.
"MAKE AMERICA THE 80'S AGAIN"
Not so high! NOT SO HIGH!... Holy shit, I'm FLYING!!!!
When the bike leaves the ground and the full orchestra kicks in--it is like turning on a faucet...
That moon scene is weaponised nostalgia. goosebumps.
love the term weaponised nostalgia!
Elliott's laugh is hailarious yet adorable!!!!
As someone who grew up int 80's there are SO MANY childhood memories being held by this scene.
Is it wrong of me to cry?
Absolutely not! There are about five different parts in this movie that I become a complete mess. Some of them from it being so sad, and others, like this one, from absolute beauty in movie making! Also the music helps :-)
I do too! This scene is so f****** beautiful, and I absolutely adore John Williams' score. Pure magic!
Lammy4ever7 Nope.
Lammy4ever7 Dude, am nearly 60 and came to RUclips to deliberately find this clip. OF COURSE I got teary-eyed seeing the "little man" managing to triumphantly escape the "establishment".
It’s not wrong. It is expected 😢
I will never forget watching this movie as a kid and feeling like I was seeing real magic on the screen
This is my favorite scene in the movie. I love when ET makes the bike fly and Elliott is cute in this it would been cool if I was alive in the 80"s to see this in theaters I wasn't born till 90.
Though I'm sure many will disagree, I believe very strongly that this is Spielberg's best film and William's greatest score. Look no farther than this scene.
The Lost World is my favorite Spielberg film
I agree
Elliott's laugh gets me everytime!
I just got tears in my eyes watching this. I was 13 when this movie came out. I'll never forget when that bicycle went up in the air the first time. It took my breath away. The movie suddenly switched from being a science fiction movie to a magical fantasy. Such a simple scene, but so moving. And the swell of music when it happened. So beautiful.
seen it in 82 in theater, I was 7 years old, my feelings at this moment were indescribable, a fire boiling in my chest as i was holding my tears because you know I was a big boy, it was so powerfull, so free, so magic, nothing ever touch me like that moment since, perhaps the separation at the end of the movie who was too much for me I break in tears. Since them I cry everytime because NOW i'm a big boy ;p
I think that the charge of the forces of good on the black gate of mordor (for frodo) in return of the king make me strongly burn inside too, and a particular scene in front of a railroad in "a monster call" but that's all, nothing can really compete with this pure magic of a scene.
This scene never fails to bring tears to my eyes, because of how beautiful it is.
If you didn't ride bikes as a 90s kid with this song in your head, I pity your childhood
Anytime I bike I always think of this scene and wish I could fly on my bike.
1:08 that's the logo for Amblin Entertainment!
They just don't make movies like this anymore :(
nolanception Or do they
If you've never seen Harry Potter.
And Stranger Things like serie El is E.T 😂 on the s1
One of the great scenes in movie history!
1:07 - 1:11 the moment the movie became an icon of the 80's.
Honestly, the remastered version, though we all go on about the Walkie Talkies, is worth it purely to see Elliot's costume's cape flapping in the wind.
“Don’t crash please”
*crashes*
I can’t be the only one who found that funny
One of the most iconic movie scenes ever
If not the most iconic 1:07
Pure movie magic.
Henry Thomas was such a great little actor in this movie! :) Also, those Nike's must have been pretty popular in the 80's.
If I have a sorcerer's stone I would give it to John Williams. He would be immortal!
2022 will be the film's 40th anniversary, and in my opinion, re-animated version of the movie would be a great way for fans to celebrate.
It should be released again in the theaters for that year, seeing this film on the big screen has no equal.
Aaaaaaand I'm crying rn. Thanks for the feels, ET
I love this movie, man. Watching this makes me feel like a kid again :,)

🌕🚲This was one of those moments in kids movies you don't wanna miss pure MAGICAL ENCHANTMENT!
My interest in bicycles was piqued due to this 1982 film. 👽
A real American myth, a legend. The moon with him and his cape is incredible.
Thank you stranger things for not letting us forget how awesome the 80s si-fi movies were.
This is actually a 2002 extended cut with a CGI ET.
You can forget movies feeling like this again.
I saw this when it was released in 1982 at the Cineramadome in Hollywood. The line to watch this movie was crazy! It was literally around the block. Not to mention, I saw it on a weekday at 1 p.m. When the bicycle flew across the moon, the theater exploded in applause. I’d never heard that in my life! It was magical ❤
This scene in my mind as I listened to Michael Jackson's voice in the ET Children's Storybook being played as a bedtime story... The moonlight entering my dark room through its big window. Owls singing outside. Magic.
Just recently saw this movie FOR THE FIRST TIME (ya I know) in my Film Studies class. Lets just safely say, I had NO CLUE that this movie was THAT good.
I can't even begin to describe the feeling I get all up and down my spine when that bike falls and then catches in the air just as the music swells. So magical.
Magical and beautiful that is how movies should be, the music sells the scene and fits it perfectly, a true masterpiece directed by Steven Spielberg and John Williams composing the music.
Everything about this entire scene is perfect, but the single moment that brings it all together for me is when Elliott yells, "AH HA!" The signature shot immediately before along with the climaxing music brings a tear to my eye every time I watch it.
One of the most iconic scenes ever
Who’s here after the ET commercial?! LOL
Michael Tardi Me!
Me, beautiful commercial :')
They should have made it a movie
Steven Roberts NO!!!!! This commercial was perfect. Let’s leave it be. Today directors are putting political agendas in classic movies. They already ruined Ghostbusters, Terminator, and Star Wars.
This is still the icon that this studio uses to this day
The orginal puppet is great but E.T. looks fantastic in CGI and it actually makes E.T. look real
that 20th anniversary cape adds a magical touch
It amazes me how this movie magic was created by genius filmmakers, that rarely get captured in today's cinema.
All time favorite movie!!! One of my favorite scenes in the world!! I'm suprised that no one included this as a historical iconic part in the movie. They all wish we were Elliot when he bike across the moon.
I hope they knew when they played THAT music over THIS scene that had an absolute masterpiece on their hands.
This part at 1:07 is used in the Amblin Entertainment logo. Anyways this is such a classic movie, and by watching this, I would always love to have the ability to fly. ^_^
Jurassic park
I just went to the theater and watched this with a group friends who I had to convince to come with me. We’re almost all 16 but they only wanted to come for social interaction (no they don’t care to social distance). Sitting in the theater with this picture on the huge screen and the flooding noise of the incredible music sent chills through my whole body, I had the widest smile on my face and every hair was standing up, it brought tears to my eyes. Everyone around me kinda just sat there and when the movie ended and I asked them how they liked it, they said “it wasn’t *that* bad.
I tried my hardest guys, there’s no hope for them :(
1:25 that grunt from e.t XD
+Windy Rat haha gets me every time.
0:36 is my favourite part, and also part 1:08, when they fly over the moon
This is literally a perfect movie.
Did anyone beside me see the new Xfinity commercial reuniting ET and Elliot on Thanksgiving? Not even Hiccup and Toothless test flight can hold a candle to this flight sequence! The rare combined talents of music and visual storytelling.
I have not seen this movie in a long time and I have it but its one of my favorite movies
Two things. One. Elliot’s AHA!!!!! Takes me back to my childhood happiness. Two. Just went to universal and of all the high tech rides the E.T. Ride they haven’t touched since the 80s was hands down my favorite.
Can't believe this movie will be 40 years old next year. In 1982, The Wizard of Oz was just over 40...
Man, that makes me feel old. This movie is the same age I am...

1:07 The true legendary Iconic Movie Scene in Hollywood History !!!!!!
I had no idea that this bike sequence in this clip had been redone from the original 1982 version. It's much more realistic now when he goes over the cliff, and he has a cape flowing in the back now. No reason to alter John Williams music as it's absolutely perfect. Listen to this musical track on RUclips without the visuals, and just concentrate on the music... You'll be happy, and get choked up at the same time.
Elliot: I dont believe it.
