Step 3 drill small holes into side of bucket ( keeps critters out ) Step 4 add water and dunks. Very intelligently presented. The only thing I would maybe change is the size of the holes in the bucket. Mosquitos can fly through a much smaller hole, and smaller holes will concentrate the CO2 so that it is more detectable.
Seconding this. Also, put the bucket in a corner or against a downwind-side wall, out of drafts, to keep breezes from dissipating the CO2. Mosquitoes are really good at detecting and homing in on CO2 if it is not too scattered. BUT! Look up "ovitrap". Those are traps that rely on keeping the hatched mosquitoes confined, so they don't need to be poisoned, and they rely on stagnant pond water to attract pregnant mosquitoes. Places with a lot of standing water around can't use that kind.
I think you want the co2 to leave the bucket. The mosquitos can see the source. They're attracted to us because of the co2 that we exhale from our bodies, not the amount that we have inside of us. Also, if there's too much co2, then there won't be enough oxygen. The co2 will settle to the bottom of the bucket because it is heavier than oxygen and will cause the flame to extinguish.
A couple of thoughts here. Female mosquitos that are ready to lay eggs won't be attracted to a source of C02 so you probably don't even need the candle to get them to show up. Female mosquitos that are seeking a blood source will be attracted to C02 but are not yet ready to lay eggs so they may fly into the bucket and just leave later on when they don't find anything. In addition to the mosquito "dunk" toss in a handful of yard clippings or some straw into the water to decay over time as this decaying plant matter attracts female mosquitos that are ready to lay eggs to the water source. Straw will keep down algae growth due to it producing hydrogen peroxide as a by product when it decays (this is an old trick used by ranchers to keep their watering tanks clean of algae). If you insist on using the candle try adding a glue trap sheet on the inside wall of the bucket. This will catch some of the actively biting female mosquitos as they fly around inside the bucket before they can leave.
I have a pond and a heavily planted, beautifull backyard and I have been planting stuff that dragon flies love ( tall flowers, cat tails etc ) to pertch on to hunt...it has worked...coming from a former exterminator, I really try to work with nature. I like the theory of a dead end breeding source for the larvae. It would be nice if the holes were smaller or entries only with no exit. Then possibly shop vac the adults out. The reason I have concerns is the faster they lay their eggs, the faster they will find a blood meal source. Culex prefer birds, hence why crows, blue Jay's, and magpies were hammered before they developed natural immunity. The more they collect blood from different hosts, the higher the likelihood they will contract a virus then they can transmit it to you or your family. Great work thinking and sharing. 😊

I had a water plant bucket in the house and I scooped rainwater up outside for it, but i didnt realize their were already skito larvae in there as they were so small but then soon after i began getting skitos flying around me after i went to bed and I was like thats weird as I hadnt had any around but then it dawned on me real quick about the plant water pot and yep, there were scumbag larvae in there.

In my neighborhood they spray BT in the eve every week or so in summer, but I think this design should be adopted by the gov and placed in the neighborhoods to control these buggers. I’m sure some artistic people could make them aesthetically pleasing. Great video!
I wonder if you were to add a surfactant such as dish soap to the water.... Then the egg laying female (which are the only ones that bite) will drown and die before she even lays the eggs. I will definitely be making some of these buckets and trying it this spring! Thanks for this info. Good stuff!
I have saved this video for the spring. I have an acre and a half yard in eastern Pennsylvania and we get tortured with mosquitos. Question on the spraying, do you do the perimeter of the area or do you also do the grass field? Also where do you place you dunk bucket, and how many would you recommend using?
I use one pint of lemon juice, One pint of blue mouth wash. And 2 ounces of lavender oil. I spray that on me and no bugs come around at all. Was cutting brush for hours and never got bit or bothered by flying insects

The one with the "forever" wick is a simple lamp. I live in a very warm climate so the vegetable shortening will probably be a lamp too when used outdoors.
I'm just wondering .... do you know whether witch hazel and/or castile soap would be good for fleas on dogs? If so, exactly how to use? I hate to put flea collars on mine but they need something. Maybe just spray them with apple cider vinegar???
Put dawn dish soap in the water. It breaks the surface tension of the water and they drown.
Edit: Dish soap is heavier then water therefore It won’t stay on the surface of water. This is a fact so no - don’t waste dish soap. Follow the OP’s design.
@@keletienne7947 so drowning the mosqitoes also kills a whole generation of mosquitoes. Spraying dawn with water on insects kills roaches and other insects.

In what situation would killing the larvae and not the mosquito be preferable to killing the mosquito?
@@RandoBoxless mess to clean up🤷♂️

Allowing the mosquito to live gives it a chance to breed in other non-trapped water pools.
Thank you.
Does the repellant system affect butterflies and bees?
I like the theory of a dead end breeding source for the larvae. It would be nice if the holes were smaller or entries only with no exit. Then possibly shop vac the adults out. The reason I have concerns is the faster they lay their eggs, the faster they will find a blood meal source. Culex prefer birds, hence why crows, blue Jay's, and magpies were hammered before they developed natural immunity. The more they collect blood from different hosts, the higher the likelihood they will contract a virus then they can transmit it to you or your family. Great work thinking and sharing. 😊
I saw a study that says mosquitoes are more attracted to certain blood types also
And to higher blood sugar
Very informative
Its my second time watching you do this. Please add mosquito bucket to your hashtags
Thanks, cool and innovative ideas for mosquito control!
Regarding Husqvarna: I splurged in a Husq blower and a weed eater a few yrs ago. Had high hopes, was sick of crappy machines that broke down. Neither Husq machine ever worked worth a crap and both totally broke down within a year. Absolute worst I’ve ever purchased. Will never buy anything from them again.
Excellent!
Good of him to say don't just use the tub of shortening.
my uncle did the same thing but instead of dunks he used a thin film of mineral oil on the surface of the water then when the skitter is lured in by the heat and co2 from the candle they get stuck in the oil then just skim the bugs and add more oil as needed
A small amount of oil in any standing water keeps Mosquitoes from laying eggs. I use mineral oil.
No toxic chemicals.... except for the crisco. 😂😂😂
Great info
Do you think these ideas would also work for no-seeums?? Thanks for the videos!!
so great, Ive been trying to remember to do some studying on how to create a CO2 "dummy" to attract mosquitos to traps and now Ive just had your vid show up and the crisco thing is great to learn about. because I was mainly wanting to figure out a co2 trickfor in the house for summertime when the skitos get inside.
Do you have a video on “how to make the candles?”
Awesome video. When you were talking about the alternative to Deet, I was ready to skip the video If you said baby soft, which definitely does not work. Haha
In my neighborhood they spray BT in the eve every week or so in summer, but I think this design should be adopted by the gov and placed in the neighborhoods to control these buggers. I’m sure some artistic people could make them aesthetically pleasing. Great video!
Cool.. thanks man
I live near a swamp, and I will be trying this. The spray however , made to exact per recipe, did not stop the biting.
I wonder if you were to add a surfactant such as dish soap to the water.... Then the egg laying female (which are the only ones that bite) will drown and die before she even lays the eggs. I will definitely be making some of these buckets and trying it this spring! Thanks for this info. Good stuff!
Very cool.
Crisco makes a fantastic crust though
I have saved this video for the spring. I have an acre and a half yard in eastern Pennsylvania and we get tortured with mosquitos. Question on the spraying, do you do the perimeter of the area or do you also do the grass field? Also where do you place you dunk bucket, and how many would you recommend using?
Depends on property size. Generally one per corner of an average sized yard. Cheers
A shield over the vent holes will help keep rain out. Party store fog machines work great and are cheap.
Super cool, thank you! Though I wonder, would the mixture work better with an emulsifier? (to blend the water and oil)
Thank you! 👍
You're welcome!
Thanks for this! Going to try next season.
Have fun!
Thanks : )
Thank you🎶🌸
Nice candles
I use one pint of lemon juice, One pint of blue mouth wash. And 2 ounces of lavender oil. I spray that on me and no bugs come around at all. Was cutting brush for hours and never got bit or bothered by flying insects
When I first saw your heading, I thought you were referring to humans, because of the obesity epidemic 😂 I suppose it’s still accurate.
Wow, I wish my Aloe Vera looked like yours.. do you have a video about growing Aloe?
Yes I have
Please do this as an experiment... combine the mossie attracting bucket, with the mossie repelling spray... see which is more powerful (spray the bucket with the oil).
I make meat grease candles. I have metal discs that float and hold the wick
I highly recommend Murphy's spray. All natural also lemon eucalyptus as a main ingredient.
As in Murphy's Oil Soap?
Have you tried an emulsifier to reduce the need for shaking the repellent compound?
Crazy idea. Does it work for Noseeums too ?
