    I've been doing this for about 5 years minus a couple bits. Step one get a 5 gallon bucket with lid . Step 2 spray said bucket whatever color you desire to blend into your yard. Step 3 drill small holes into side of bucket ( keeps critters out ) Step 4 add water and dunks. Step 5 place bucket or buckets around your property 6) check and apply new dunks about every three weeks. Mosquitos will find buckets in less than 24hrs , no candles needed .

      I've noticed that the mosquitoes have been insane here after Milton. My hypothesis is that since there's a lot of standing water without predators, the conditions are right for breeding.
      One factor of mosquito control is predators, like fish, minnows, water fowl, etc. If you've got a lake, then usually predators will eat the larvae. But a mile up the road from me, there's a house with probably an acre of standing water that wasn't there a month ago... So there's nothing to eat the larvae and the swarm grows.

It repels, does not kill unless its larvae in water. Natural garlic. Mix with water in a sprayer. Your yard will smell like garlic bread for an hour then that goes away and the allicin in the garlic repels flies and mosquitoes. They use it in New Oeleans and India!!! We use dragonflies to catch the mosquitoes. It sounds silly but it works better and better every year and you kind of build an eco system. It works better than spraying any chemicals. • @moodberry
    @moodberry 2 месяца назад +87

    Very intelligently presented. The only thing I would maybe change is the size of the holes in the bucket. Mosquitos can fly through a much smaller hole, and smaller holes will concentrate the CO2 so that it is more detectable.

    • @Akio-fy7ep
      @Akio-fy7ep 2 месяца назад +1

      Seconding this. Also, put the bucket in a corner or against a downwind-side wall, out of drafts, to keep breezes from dissipating the CO2. Mosquitoes are really good at detecting and homing in on CO2 if it is not too scattered. BUT! Look up "ovitrap". Those are traps that rely on keeping the hatched mosquitoes confined, so they don't need to be poisoned, and they rely on stagnant pond water to attract pregnant mosquitoes. Places with a lot of standing water around can't use that kind.

    • @csimpson8182
      @csimpson8182 2 месяца назад +20

      I think you want the co2 to leave the bucket. The mosquitos can see the source. They're attracted to us because of the co2 that we exhale from our bodies, not the amount that we have inside of us. Also, if there's too much co2, then there won't be enough oxygen. The co2 will settle to the bottom of the bucket because it is heavier than oxygen and will cause the flame to extinguish.

    A couple of thoughts here. Female mosquitos that are ready to lay eggs won't be attracted to a source of C02 so you probably don't even need the candle to get them to show up. Female mosquitos that are seeking a blood source will be attracted to C02 but are not yet ready to lay eggs so they may fly into the bucket and just leave later on when they don't find anything. In addition to the mosquito "dunk" toss in a handful of yard clippings or some straw into the water to decay over time as this decaying plant matter attracts female mosquitos that are ready to lay eggs to the water source. Straw will keep down algae growth due to it producing hydrogen peroxide as a by product when it decays (this is an old trick used by ranchers to keep their watering tanks clean of algae). If you insist on using the candle try adding a glue trap sheet on the inside wall of the bucket. This will catch some of the actively biting female mosquitos as they fly around inside the bucket before they can leave.

    This will be a great experiment for me. As I have a small water fountain the mosquitoes continually lay in, and I have a mosquito dunk in there to take care of that problem. I’ll be curious to see how much this bucket draws! Thx

    • @BrAndroidB
      @BrAndroidB 2 месяца назад +2

      I had the exact same problem. Then I had an idea... and just added salt.
      I don't know if it kills the eggs, or if the mosquitoes simply refused to lay eggs in the salt water, but larvae are no longer a problem. It works well, is perfectly safe, it's cheap, and salt won't evaporate.
      My only concern is whether it could corrode the fountain pump components. I would be hesitant if any components, that make contact with the water, were made of metal. However, as far as I could tell, all of mine are plastic.

    Pedantic I know, but castile soap and witch hazel are not carrier oils they are surfactants. (I believe it's best to be accurate when discussing practical household chemistry.)
    The one with the "forever" wick is a simple lamp. I live in a very warm climate so the vegetable shortening will probably be a lamp too when used outdoors.

    I like the theory of a dead end breeding source for the larvae. It would be nice if the holes were smaller or entries only with no exit. Then possibly shop vac the adults out. The reason I have concerns is the faster they lay their eggs, the faster they will find a blood meal source. Culex prefer birds, hence why crows, blue Jay's, and magpies were hammered before they developed natural immunity. The more they collect blood from different hosts, the higher the likelihood they will contract a virus then they can transmit it to you or your family. Great work thinking and sharing. 😊

    I had a water plant bucket in the house and I scooped rainwater up outside for it, but i didnt realize their were already skito larvae in there as they were so small but then soon after i began getting skitos flying around me after i went to bed and I was like thats weird as I hadnt had any around but then it dawned on me real quick about the plant water pot and yep, there were scumbag larvae in there.
