Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X - A first look review of the new lightweight Triumphs

- We've seen the spy shots and read (and written) some of the news articles relating to these two all-new bikes from Triumph, but today is the first time we stand next to and get a feel for the new Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X prior to the press riding launch.
And these aren’t just all-new bikes landing in a new segment for Triumph, they are also the first machines to come from Triumph’s partnership with Bajaj. It's a company that is synonymous with machines heading into the light-middle-weight and A2 segment, thanks to the all-conquering KTM to name just one.
As a special preview to the new model, we joined the world's motorcycle press, for a look at the bikes and a chat with the team behind them.

Triumph's design language unlike the competition is organic, unique, and original, you will not mistake these for anything else. If their engineers designed a robust engine to go along with the looks, I think they will have a sure-fire winner coming to their showrooms. I want one myself.
Indeed.
Oh I'm getting an X for sure. I have a Duc, a couple DT's and a Tiger 800. I have owned 5 Triumphs all Triples now I look forward to something I can fling about in the dirt a bit more.
@@mark.e.pz
Looks like a motorcycle, nothing unique about it, certainly not original.
@@Finnv893 Gonna have to disagree mate. They are pretty sharp. The Husky is more visually alarming but not everybody needs nor wants that.
Love these new, smaller Triumph's. I was looking at the 900 scrambler, but their prices kept me from even considering them. I'm also a shorter rider who has been riding since the 70's so these 400's are perfect for me in both style and size. Hopefully they'll be available with spoked wire wheels and are priced in a range that I can afford. If not, I'll be taking a hard look at the new Royal Enfield 450 that's about to be released.
They have even fit good tyres to them.👍
I’m an old short guy who would love a lightweight scrambler, but the 400X is almost 2” taller than their 900! Guess I’ll have to dirty up the speed 400 instead.
Which I think most people will do, buy the speed 400, put higher handle bars or maybe swap them for the scrambler bars, some knobby tires and you are sorted😅 . Ground clearance from the speed 400 already looks good to me, I wouldn't be surprised its similar to the 900 scrambler, and the exhaust on the speed 400 looks way better than on the scrambler 400. ABS disconnection could also be possible but making a switch from the ABS Fuse.
But it dont get switchable abs
@@Fiatmannen1 It might be possible to make a switch from the ABS fuse, I saw it being done on other motorcycles.
@@ripmax333 but then u dont front abs. No K 5hinkbit is best to go with the x then it is all there from the start. Bigger frontwheel more suspension travel more upright seting and more raked fork and sturdier wheels.
Both look great. The Scrambler 400X really interests me as a second bike. Looking forward to the review.
If these release in the US for under $6k they will sell out every year for the next decade and will retain their value very well. Sign me up for a Scrambler. And if not the Speed. Either way, I will get one, oh yes.
Why can't we buy one now?
Really looking forward to these.
One of the closest specced bike to these, that I can think of, is the Fantic Caballero 500. I’ve got one and it’s great, but they are rare in UK and I do worry about future spares availability.
I am a very lanky 6’4” with long legs, surprisingly, the little Fantic is quite roomy, I really like the look of these Triumphs, I need to throw a leg over one sometime, see if it’s a viable option for me.
I wish they would make the street 400 in the same green as the X
Their gonna sell bucket loads!
Only in the UK
Already 10000 bikes booked in just 10 days in India
@@kyakaruvlogs2784 that’s some preorders!
All depends on the price 👍
@@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff Yep & Hardly Davidson had just launched the day earlier the X440 for a few hundred bucks lower than the Triumph Speed 400.
Triumph were offering a £100 discount on the 1st 10,000 orders & production capacity presently is 5000 bikes a month. So by the time we see the 1st bike on the roads, the waiting period would be atleast 6-7 months if not more.
I would really like to see a comparison between the 400 X, RE 350 Hunter and Honda CL500 Scrambler. For me, those are the direct competitors
really liking the 400 X sounds great, except for the small gas tank. My KTM 390 adventure had a 14.5 liter and my Honda 500 X has a 17.5 liter. WHY ONY 13 LITERS ? I love riding the back roads and it is hard to find gas with out hitting a main road, and even then finding one open on Sunday or late in the evening can be hard. I would love the Triumph 400 X but sorry not with that small gas tank. The Honda 500 X will give me over 540 Km. and as good as 580 if I take it easy. So can ride all morning with out having to worry about finding gas. I love the singles. Showing my age but Triumph did make single engines a 250 cc and I think a 500 cc,
Triumph has launched Speed 400 at pricing of $2900 ex showroom in India. 16000 kms service ceiling, Built quality, engine, reliability- 2yr warranty and Triumph branding everything is outstanding. This bike will last for decades if taken care properly.
It's the reason I sold my bobber. Granted I wasn't expecting to go touring on it. But filling up every 70 odd miles got old very, very quickly. I'll never understand their tiny tanks with respect to the rest of the market.
They need a blacked out version. Nice motorbike BTW.
They make the street model with a gloss black tank.
4-5 month away possibly
Both bikes look great. I'm interested, but key thing will be price. I know the speed will be less than £3,000 in India, which will no doubt be £6,000 in UK. I bet the scrambler will top £7k with a couple of options by the time it hits the UK.
Pricing should be near Enfield 350 since that will be it's competitor in UK.
It will be difficult to sell at £7k. Most riders would go for the CB500X at that price.
@@janporkpie anything above £6k for 400x (price of the cl500) will be a big failure
When is it released on the euro/uk market?
£5000 and £5600
If they’re already on sale in India why can’t they tell us the UK price, I’m fancying a Royal Enfield 500 trails and would like to know before I decide which one to buy. 🤔
Well, the speed 400 is being sold here in India at around 233000 INR (approximately 2600 euros). My guess is that it would be sold at around 5k euro in UK, I think the sales are gonna start around in January. Though, the Indian prices are definitely gonna hike up soon. I booked mine almost two weeks ago.
@@mahirbhuiyaare they built in India and then exported to the UK and euro?

What is all this Bajaj stuff? Do they make the engine? The bike? Where is the bike made? Is this a 'real' Triumph, or a bike they had co-manufactured by a different company (Bajaj) ?
if these dont cost too much
and insurance doesnt hate me because ill be 20
i might get a scrambler 400x as my second bike by trading in a z125
It would be nice if you introduce the audience the person you're interviewing here or put a letterbox stating his name.
Toad did exactly this, introducing Stewart Wood @ 3:07. Pay attention! 🙄
@@mrsilbo6499 Yeah.. Pay attention!! Ha.
What’s the american cost for each?
Uh, homeboy needs to learn a bit about the demographic. I love small bore bikes, and the two I am considering right now are the speed 400 and the duke 390. They are DIRECT competitors, and NEED to be compared to one another. You don't just get to cop out, they compete for EXACTLY the same customer.
I’d be surprised if those looking at KTM would consider a triumph.
@@BikingChap And vice versa. The Triumph looks like a motorcycle. KTMs look like alien insectoid invaders.
No. Not everyone prefers classic look. Majority youth prefers sharp, alien like look of KTM.
@@surajtomar4870 sure I get that but (in the uk at least) Triumph has a very ‘old man’ brand image so I’m surprised they’re pitching it as a sporty small single. I’d guess this is much more aimed at the (much larger) Indian market where Triumph doesn’t seem to have this older image?
True..I am with the Triumph spokes person...the design language of the KTM and Triumph are totally different..if you are like an impulsive high-on adrenaline teenager at heart who likes to trash their bikes and be rowdy..you will like the KTM....Triumph is for the more mature at heart kind of audience...its like comparing beer to whiskey..
It all comes down to the price tag
When will we see ride reviews on these bikes!?
January 2024
So massively over square to try and max the power output at the expensive of grunt. Let’s hope the new 450 Enfield follows their traditional long stroke route so we don’t end up with just a number of similar engines to the KTM390.
This has WAY better low end torque than Duke. 30Nm @ 3000 RPM. It has longer stroke by 4 mm.
@@surajtomar4870 interesting, thank you!
Also it's unlikely 450 Enfield will have traditional longer stroke, definitely higher stroke than a KTMs though. I am saying this only due to the size of its radiator which indicates a higher bore.
@@surajtomar4870 I'm not sure you can determine the bore / stroke ratio from the size of the rad to be honest but i think you're right, if the rumours are 35-40bhp for the 450 then that's not going to be a undersquare thumper, sadly.
@@BikingChap Yah all the reviews are saying the low end is thoroughly acceptable but midrange to high is where it's at. I'm good with that. Getting my money ready soon for a birthday present to me in April '24. I seldom go off road on my Tiger 800 street model.
Why no mpg figures
I read 80mpg uk 😊
Tamed down Bajaj manufactured KTM engine now badged Triumph
No. Completely new engine. The drive chain is on other side for which every component has to be redesigned which costs same as creating an all new engine. It's 399cc with 64mm stroke compared to 373cc and 60mm stroke in KTM. In gear acceleration is fast in Triumph.
@@surajtomar4870Wow .. that's a lot of details. It's great to have someone knowledgeable to clear the doubts.👏👏👏
Totally false information. Why make stuff up just for the sake if it?
@@garywilde6171 No interest in making up stuff. Just a guess with very close specs with each other
@@Pistonjockeymaking stuff up is not clever and not amusing
What about Bajaj's role in there ?
they will make em
Built by Bajaj. Good manufacturing track record, best partner triumph will probably have in terms of spare parts etc as well
At least they are singles. probably quite lively. As quick as a 390 Duke? I bet these sell a lot in Thailand, where I am most of the year, although I think I'd rather have a CL500, even though it's a twin. 1990 [Nick J]
They have slightly longer stroke than Duke 390 so it has WAY better low end performance. It's a 399cc engine unlike 373cc in current Duke 390. Fit & finish is higher than Duke. I have booked it and might get it by next week.
@@surajtomar4870 I have a 390 and it has fantastic bottom-end shove. It will pull top gear from 3,000 rpm. I doubt the fit and finish is better. The Duke is really well finished.
@@1990-t1j The full reviews will be out today but every expert has mentioned that they have set new benchmark in fit & finish, there's is no doubt that quality is significantly higher as this has been universally mentioned first ride reviews. It's torque band also support better lower end due to longer stroke. It gives 31Nm torque at 3-4k rpm compared to 23Nm in duke.
@@surajtomar4870 It could be that my 390 has more low-down torque than a stock bike as it has had an airbox mod, a very simple, cheap mod: a K&N filter and six holes drilled in the airbox. I have read some nonsense on RUclips comments about the 390 lacking low-down punch. It is one of its main features, although, as I said, I am willing to believe mine is better than standard. As for finish, my 390 is as good as any more expensive bikes I have owned.
What do you think of the new H-D X440?That will blow both bikes out of the water low down the rev range.
Regards, N
@@1990-t1j X440 has better low end torque due it's engine design but that bike suffers from relativly poor fit and finish and very controversial design. That bike won't be sold internationally unlike Triumph 400. X440 has excellent engine-chasis according to first ride reviews but aesthetics are universally criticized.
What are the seat heights?
Molto belle ma le ruote in lega non mi piacciono proprio su questo tipo di moto
Wished they'd made it 500 or 650 with 50HP +
That would be nice too, but I think they were going for the smaller displacement market. They've already got a lineup of 900cc bikes that sort of fills that middle weight range. Plus if they had to make it a twin like the others to get that extra bit of power that'll also hike up the price of the bike, and I appreciate them making a good bike at a more affordable price
They havnt
170kg..... ZZzzzzz ZZzzzzz
Wish they had black forks
A scrambler with cast wheels makes it a pathetic attempt at a styling exercise and their price point in the UK means that they wont sell in decent numbers. These mediocre generic motorcycles badged up with a Triumphs badge is nothing more than a knee jerk reaction to tumbling sales.
No. It's for tackling mild offroading you get while touring in India. India is still the main market for this bike not UK. This is not a generic motorcycle with Triumph badge, the engine, chasis was built from ground up for it. It has recieved 10,000 bookings in the span of 10 days within India. I have booked one too and expecting it to be delivered by next week.
