My Momma made this cake in the 70's. For family dinners and for potlucks. She made it as a sheetcake and would put coconut and chopped up pecans in the cake and then coconut in the dreams whip frosting. I have my mommy's recipe box and I have this recipe she wrote out. I had forgotten about it. I'm gonna make it for Christmas now. Thank you for the memory.
That’s how we made it too!! Yummy!🥰❤️🎄
Hey Tammy!
This was my favorite cake growing up. My Granny made it for every get together, baby shower, baptism, etc.. She always used ground pecans n crushed pineapple in the cake, but also added drained crushed pineapple to the dream whip and pistachio icing, with coconut on the outside and maraschino cherries. And boy, She made it tall! Very tall. No less than 4-6 layers. She would put it in the fridge the day before she served it so it would set up and cut nicely (I think, because it was such a big cake) that would be my guess anyhow..It was a real treat! Thank you for your recipe. I thought it had become a long lost recipe because I don't see many folks making it these days.
Forever my favorite cake! 💚
Hello Tammy and Chris . This cake was a big hit in the '70s . It's got its name . From the Watergate scandal in the White House . My sister-in-law made one for the holidays . And I fell in love with this cake . Thank you Sir for sharing the recipe . And I also thank you Tammy . For sharing the recipe . The Lord Bless Both Of You .🙏
We need to come up with a Jan 6 Cake for the scandal of the failed coup during the Trump Administration. I wonder if Tammy could com up with a recipe for that.
@@sanna7509 . I'll name the cake 🍰. Yeah January the 6th was my Birthday . I would call it stupid stuff of trump . Are Trump screwed up cake 🍰. Hahaha. Have a wonderful day .
The 🍰 cake is beautiful and looks delicious.I loves vintage clothing and food
I made up my own version of watergate salad. I call it tropical fluff. Every one loves it. Put one can crushed pineapple in a bowl. Add one smaller box of instant lemon pudding( just dry out of the box) and mix well. Add one med can of mandarin oranges, drained. Mix. Add one normal sized container of koolwhip and mix. Chill. All done!😊. I dont care for coconut, but people say itd be great with coconut in it. Some might like nuts. But i make the 4 ingredient mix and NEVER have any to bring home. Its quick, simple, pretty, tasty, and light.
Got all the stuff, trying this!
Mmmm
@@keahithefieryone8513 enjoy!😊
I grew up eating Watergate Salad. It was one of my favorites! 😋 I've never even heard of Watergate Cake, but I'm sure it's tasty! I would probably add pineapples 🍍 to the batter. It looks delicious! Thanks for sharing! ❤️
Oh Tammy.. just love the gingerbread people on your head 🥰 ,you look so festive 😍
My goodness, I didn't know that they still made Dream Whip. Don't think I've used it since the early 70's!! Melaney from SoCal
My mom used to make watergate cake for both my sister and my birthdays, and she would make the Watergate salad. Yummy! My mother would add the pineapple for my cake, my sister had it plain like the one you made.
Another birthday cake I would like is the hummingbird cake, which my grandmother would make.
Thank you for bring back wonderful memories!
Totally forgot about this cake. My mom made it in a 9 x 13 pan and made sure we all got a cherry. TFS this memory.
Hey, Tammy 🎄❤️🎄💚🎄. I remember this cake, but hadn’t thought about it in years! It’s really yummy and so pretty. My mom didn’t make it, I did😊 I might make one for my volunteer fire department Christmas dinner ❤. I always add my liquid ingredients first, too😂. Dream Whip was before Cool Whip 😂. It’s beautiful! Thank you, Chad, for sharing your recipe with Tammy ❤
Thank you so much tammy for all your cooking for us
I'm going to try the cake
We love you guys with the love of the LORD JESUS CHRIST
About 10 years ago I thought I would make a Watergate Cake because I love Watergate salad it's one of my very favorites to this day. So I got a white cake mix I put pistachio pudding in it I use milk instead of water I put a packet of pistachio pudding in it I put one of those small cans of crushed pineapple in it I put chopped pecans in it and I put coconut in it and of course the oil and the eggs and I made that in a sheet pan and I'm by 13. And when it was done and cool I made the icing I used Cool whip crushed pineapple pistachio pudding chopped pecans coconut and miniature marshmallows. I made it for Easter and I made one for my good friend Pam for Easter as well it was absolutely delicious. But I didn't know that there was already a cake recipe for it out there I just thought it was something that I meant. Anyways thanks for sharing this recipe because there's lots of people that will love it.
Beautiful Easter Cake 💚💛💚❤️❤️💛❤️
My mom used to make this every summer! One of my faves! Now I have the recipe 👏👏👏
This moist and festive cake always makes me think of my dear mother-in-law who liked to make it around the holidays-good memories!
I remember my mother in law making this but never knew it was called a Watergate cake. It’s really tasty. I’d totally forgotten about dream whip
I can watch and hear the mixer beat the cake mix and the sound it makes when it hits the bottom of the bowl all day. Watching you prepare this cake brought me back to my childhood and remembering watching my mom bake and cook. Yes, always lick the spoon and whatever stays in the bowl. Thanks for the video.
I remember my mom saving this recipe from the newspaper. I was there ....back in the day. Not sure she made it, but it looks yummy!!
I love this cake. Been making it for years thanks to my mother!
I've had this caKe baked in layers and it is so good with that frosting.
My Mom used to make this only shed did cupcakes and sheet cakes. This is a delicious cake. Thank you for the memory!❤
My mom made watergate congealed salad a LOT while I was growing up. She had a Tupperware salad mold that she would use, and whenever that mold showed up on the counter, we knew what was coming!
Your watergate cake looks very good. I’ve used Dream Whip a lot over the years--it makes a good whipped topping every time.
Thanks for this video--I love watching you decorate cakes. They are always beautiful…..😊……..❤️Brenda
My mother made this cake when I was a young girl. It was fantastic! :)
Yes I have it on my youtube channel years ago
My mom used dream whip but I have never...This cake looks so delicious that I will have to make it. We always make pistachio pudding for the holidays but I think I will change it up this Christmas. Thanks Tammy ❤️
My momma used to use Dream Whip all the time.

I've put my order in with the hubby to have this for my 70th birthday. Can't wait! Haven't had it in years! Will be so good! Now the wait until February 5th. Merry ⛄🎄 Christmas!
Hope you enjoy it!
I always liked using dream whip better than cool whip. It took more effort but is more like real whipped cream.
Look at you with your adorable Christmas blings!! Haha . Never had this cake. May have to try it!
This brings back wonderful memories. This was my mother's specialty and I'm so glad to see this today.
I use Dream Whip for frosting sometimes! It’s really good.
You could make it in a christmas tree pan and use maraschino cherries for ornaments
My gramma made this cake when I was a little girl. And I’m 58 yrs old. I LOVED this cake! Thanks for sharing with us. Blessings to all. ❤️🙏
This is my next cake!! My children were practically raised in Watergate Salad so they will LOVE this cake.
My Mama’s aunt used to make this once a year for Easter and that was the only time she did and we looked forward to it all year.

Your videos take my mind off worldly events. I like listening to you and Chris. The food you make, when followed to the letter, tastes just as delicious as it looks. I've made many dishes, cakes and pies, and they're fail proof. Thank you🥰
Awesome! Thank you!
Oh my goodness, thank you! Not only a great recipe but icing tips! I need plenty of that. My cakes are fine but icing them is terrible. And I love what you did with the icing spatula as well! ❤
I made this and it was absolutely amazing
Wonderful!
I loves your gingerbread headband
Ok I was hooked and made one tonight. Yum yum yum. Thank you.
Momma made Watergate salad a lot. It was always my sisters favorite. My Pop always cleaned the bowl lol and I helped lol , I am gonna try this !!!
i love your cozy kitchen ❤
You are right about the pineapple. I've had the frosting made with cool whip, 1 can of crushed pineapple (drained), and the box of pistachio pudding. YUMMY!
You probably had Watergate Salad not the frosting, you put more than pineapple in it! Just like she showed pecans, maraschino cherries, coconut and, you also put marshmallows in it!
My mom made this cake regularly and we all loved it. Watergate salad, too.
One of my faves! Haven't had it in years. Thanx for reminding me!
I still have my mom’s recipe she used club soda instead of sprite. I should try sprite but is sweet with the club soda. Love this my favorite.
I used to make this cake all the time! It was always a hit. I made it a layer cake. I haven't made it in years and you've inspired me to do it again. Thank you for sharing this wonderful memory cake.
Looks amazing. I’ll add drained crushed pineapple to cake and frosting.

Like some other comments I have had a Watergate salad but never in cake form. That looks yummy. I forgot all about dream whip! Pistachio pudding itself is good too

Looks delicious
I had Watergate salad for Thanksgiving but I have never had the cake. Looks delicious 😋
I've made this cake as well. It was a 4-layer cake, though, just like your coconut cake. I think I like your way better. A lot less work and so much prettier!
Love this! Try pecans in the cake. Delicious!
I think bounty cakes became popular in the 70's and that's why these cakes were baked that way. Using pistachio pudding also was also a 70's thing!
OH WOW! That looks delicious🤩
I’ve become a fan of B. Dylan Hollis, and I recently bought his book Baking Yesteryear. One of his recipes in the cookbook is Watergate Cake. I knew about the “Watergate Salad,” but not the Watergate Cake
I’m still love’n your theme song!! Cake looks awesome!! ♥️🙏🏼♥️
My grandmother made this when I was little. Never much cared for it because I don't like pistachios. But I loved my grandmother so thanks for the memory.
Thanks for sharing. I really will make this!
Dream whip was all my mama bought for desserts, I like it much better than cool whip. Love pistachio pudding too, this cake looks delicious

My Grandson, Daughter n I are all allergic to pistachios! I'd have to use a different kind of pudding mix! It wouldn't be a Watergate cake but, it would still be a good cake! My Mama used Dream Whip n so have I... It's Good! Thanks Tammy. GOD BLESS. 🙏🙏❤❤
