Over Exposing Portra 160

- In this video I will be walking through the ruins of Bombay Beach while testing the effects of over exposing film, specifically Porta 160, with my trusty Leica M6.
I have personally never tried to over expose film because I'm naturally a digital photographer and when over exposing digital images you tend to blow out the sky and subjects. Film is much different and reacts very well to over exposing. A lot of times when you over expose film you will bring out more colors and might even cause the image to be more contrasty.
I thoroughly enjoyed testing this out and will definitely continue to over expose Portra and any other film stock.

Stumbled upon your Leica M6 video and I was super surprised that this is a new channel! Love this video too. Keep up the good work man, looking forward to the next one!
Thanks man, so glad you like the videos!
That´s one of the perks of film over digital, it has way more latitude (dynamic range) and that´s why, specially with negative film people tend to overexpose, to retain more detail in the shadows since you know that it´s not gonna have any problems with the highlights. Great video, keep up the good work!
Thank you! I had a blast trying it out and I’m so pumped about the results!
Heck yeah. All about those punchy, overexposed colors.
💛💛💛
I almost never shoot box speed man! I personally think Portra has the nicest tones when overexposed a couple of stops, even more so on medium format. You can overexpose like 4-5 stops on medium format and still retain a lot of detail. The latitude is insane.
Absolutely crazy! Love that you can do that with film and so excited to continue to do it!
So do you pull ur film or just develop normally?
@@joshuakoblin7215 just develop normally man!
Whaddya mean +4 +5 overexposure? This one here was overexpsed by +2 and in many shots- skintones were blown out white, man.
I think there's a chance you might live in a pretty overcast location, where there's no harsh sun. That's why you can overexpose so much. I don't think +4 +5 is really possible for others.
@@eladbari obviously conditions are a huge factor, but it is possible. Medium format has a much wider exposure latitude than 35mm. Kyle McDougall has a great video on this. Highly recommend checking it out.! ruclips.net/video/T3OIzjhu9eo/видео.html
To over expose just set the iso to a lower Number is this correct? You had 160 Gil
But iso 50
Great pictures man Looked to look
I’m still learning to shot on my Canon A1 35mm
Amazing 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼... Really a great job. ♥️
Thank you!
Model: My eyes are really burning!
Photographer: Sometimes that happens.
😆😆
Thanks so much. Love this video. Great shots. Peace
Like your channel of film photography! Just joking around on my last comment. You stayed focused through the shoot! Yes Portra is a great film stock. 👍
thank you, this was informative. The best results seemed to be when you and the subject were in severe sunshine.
Very nice videos! I'm also about to experience the leica and film world... Hope to see more content soon! Keep on going!! :-)
Thank you, glad you like the video and hope you have a wonderful leica experience!
Nice video! What brand did you use to mount your phone on your camera? It looks very stable, thanks!
I loved the results! I’m assuming you didn’t pull the film while developing? Curious because I’m about to shoot a friend on 6x7 with Portra 160 and I’m nervous about over exposing. I’ve always shot box speed but looking to try something different.
Don't pull it... over expose it by 4 stops. It can handle it no problem.
❤️
Nice vid dude. Were you rating it at iso 50 & also exposing for the shadows? I had done this and quite a few shots turned out wayy overexposed lol
Thank you! I was mostly exposing for whatever was in the center of the frame so not always exposing for shadows. That being said, I didn’t have any shots that ended up being over exposed but maybe I would’ve experienced that if I was exposing for shadows
Isaiah Film cheers!
Question ... did you have to tell your developer to plus or negative anything or did you just do a regular at 160 for example when I shoot hp5 at 1600 I tell the developer to develop it at that .... being that your ISO is at 50 do you tell them when they develop that ?
If the goal is to overexpose like he did, the lab should use the box speed to develop it. They usually do a bit of autocorrection with the scan though.
yeah bro where did you get the iPhone attachment
So when it comes to developing the film ...is this pulling film ?
why i cant find your instagram
