Innocent Days? Mam what is a homosexual? I joined Merchant Navy 'At Seventeen' Queen's 'Cross my heart and hope to die' Immanuel. Didn't He Do Well! I've been a Manic Street Preachers since 1986. I was saved in Wales 1984. Love the Metro trains and N Shields to S Shields Ferry Glad to have a Free bus pass.
I remember going to the matinee at the Scala cinema on Saturday afternoons in the 1950s and walking back to Forest hall as we spent our bus fare, threehapence, on sweets! Midweek we'd go swimming at Chillingham Road baths straight after school. My mother and I would go to the Lyric cinema some evenings while my father was away in the Korean War (he was gone three years), I recall seeing 'Singin'' In The Rain'..... Happy days!
I really enjoyed seeing this. My Nanna and Granda lived on Addycombe and my parents started an auto electric business on Rothbury Tc. I even bought my first house in Heaton (Warton Tc) I remember going to the sweet shop as a kid and seeing the old pics really took me back, thank you xx
I loved this... We lived in Heaton for 25 years. I lived opposite the entrance to the station on North View, next to Brownlee's bakers, then Sackville Road, this brought back so many good memories. Thank you!
It was around 40 years ago, and we were University students (many lived in Heaton even then) sharing 35 Cheltenham Terrace. I recall the cold despite feeding the gas meter regularly; Our back wall fell in under the weight of the snow that winter - so either 1977 or 1978; and surprised to find my elder sister's ex-husband David Pinder living next door at 37, renting a room from a friend. One housemate Ian Thompson was doing the landscape design course at the University, and we spent a fair amount of time in Heaton Park walking in and from the Union, helping him with his tree identification. Good memories of the people and the area, catching the bus in, and even the train from time to time.
nice job! Thank you! I'm sitting here in California it seems like yesterday! Geordie always! love your videos of me old hometown! I grew up in Walker....loved your video on Wallsend, Walker, Byker lovely memories! My Grandad would take me for a long walk from the Fossway to Heaton Park! and my Grandma and I would go to the chiropodist on Heaton Road...my Grandad loved going to the Bingo...or did he?! and my Dad had a few furniture stores along Heaton Road...lovely memories...I'm in my 60's now! and all my happy memories were back in the 60's! how strange of a co-incidence is that?!!!
Brings back lots of happy memories for me as my Grandparents used to live at 9 Richardson Street.Newcastle.Loved going to Heaton Park with them.I used to remember a lovely sweet shop in Blue on Chillingham Road.Loved going in there. 😊😍
I lived in Heaton from 1953 till 1974 when I got married. Lived on Heaton Rd, Coquet Ter. and Simonside Ter. Got married at St Gabriel's. My husband says you can take the lass out of Heaton but not Heaton out of the lass. Loved every minute there. I was Watson then and went to Ravenswood and North Heaton Secondary School for Girls.
Thanks for the memories, I was born and lived in the 40s and 50s in Heaton Park road and went to Chillingham road school . Very handy for the lovely park we had then .
Brilliantly done my friend , liked all aspects but thought the small portions of age approprite music that was played that was a hit the same year was a particularly nice touch , very well thought out upload.....thank you for a very good work and upload.
Lived as a student in Lesbury Road and Rothbury Terrace 1967-1970, remember Mrs Tulips corner shop and Tiger loaves; adored the area, reminded me of home.
The only thing I remember about 1970s/80s Heaton was The Legendary Yorkshire Heroes off licence, where they sold vodka on draught. You could take in a pop bottle and get it filled with spirits for half the price of a 'proper' bottle. It was also the only place in Newcastle that sold Belgian beer. Maybe that's why I don't remember much about the place ...
I live in Katsuura, Japan and originally ,many many years ago lived in Rochester Dwellings, Walker. I was born in 1935 and have outlived all my siblings and most of my cousins. Still very active and, teaching in Japan. I often wonder if any of my contemporaries are still around. Our family moved very much upmarket to High Heaton in the 1950s to an excellent council house - in Langton Terrace. Those were the days of 11plus exams and possible upward mobility to grammar schools. Also 2 years National Service . R.A.F . and Germany in my case. Those were the days. Whyaye man. Would love comments. Jack.
Very well edited together, particularly the sounded effects. I lived there for a year, lots of students but never any bother. Sadly the Spar turned into a halal butchers which didn't impress me.
Used to visit friends living in this area, Heaton Road and Rothbury Terrace etc. during my living with my wife in the University residence near University library during 1981-83. I was studying postgraduation in Naval Architecture in the University under some great teachers. Used to come most often to Heaton from my place by bus, was it bus no. 38? Sometimes my friends used to pick me up. Great memories Sir, of my late twenties. Thanks for upload.
I was born in Cardigan Terrace went to Chilly Road and Manor Park school and lived all my life in and around Heaton but sadly Chilly Road is nothing like it was back in 60s and 70s it was a thriving shopping place with a huge variety of shops now it's just fast food and charity shops.
Paul Addison. I went to Manor Park in september 1965. Unfortunately due to family circumstances I had to leave in 1968 when we moved down south. I was in forms 1w, 2w, and 3w. I can still name all of my classmates alphabetically. Happy days in a great school. Keith Black.
Love this brought back lots of lovey memories. Lived on Meldon terrace then moved to Heaton road. Went to school at ravenswood. I go back up to see my parents but chillingham road is just now how I remember it. Which is sad actually.
Well-presented 'now and then' photos. Actually reassuring - many street scenes have not changed much. The streets and houses look cleaner and tree-planting has greened the environment. Using black-and-white for photos in the 1960s and 70s and good colour for 2010-12has the effect of somewhat exaggerating the change. Colour photos from (now) 50 years ago would show that not much had changed. The cars have of course, and there are many more of them showing that most households have cars now. Newcastle and Tyneside have such well-built houses and such a strong urban fabric that they retain their street scenes and character better than most parts of the country.
Thank you so much for sharing, this video is very personnel for me as my mum and gran lived in Spenceley street off Chillingham rd,, Would you happen to have an images from that street. They would be amazing to see. Thank you.
Hey thanks!I cant believe the amount of times i seen this whilst making it that i never noticed that id put Rothbury Avenue rather than Terrace!!Erm,actually it was a deliberate mistake, well done!! Absolutely class! I was disappointed not to see any footage from the "50 pence piece" or that lethal brick slide :) mid 80s. #chillyroadprimarykid
Used to live in Heaton. Simonside Terrace. Just off Chilli Road. Thanks for the memories!
Thanks for the memories, I was born and lived in the 40s and 50s in Heaton Park road and went to Chillingham road school . Very handy for the lovely park we had then .

Does anybody remember Donkins Toy shop, it was on Chillingham Road opposite the petrol station. I spent many happy hours in there in the 1950/60s
Oh yes! Mr Donkin and the big bank of blue-boxed Hornby Dublo and Dinky toys. Always hovered there on way back from St Theresa's school.
ah seeing that the Tesco was an old Scala picturehouse breaks my heart a bit - didn't know about that - great film, really enjoying it
Excellent - thank you. Although that will be Rothbury Terrace, not Rothbury 'Avenue'.
Dosent cheryl cole the singer come from heaton in newcastle . ??

I thought this was Heaton in Bradford. What a disappointment.
It was such a disappointment that you had to comment on it rather than just not watch it? you are disappointing.
Aaron Swallow+ You could have mentioned which city this area's in. Then I wouldn't have made the comment that I did. There's many 'Heatons' in the UK.
Will Scarlett+ To be fair that is a good point. I have taken your comments on board and changed the name.
Aaron Swallow+ Thank you :)
