  • In a preview of 1986 WCF, Rockets and Lakers squared off in a packed Forum for the first time in 85/86 campaign and played one of the best regular season games in the 80's. Just check these numbers:
    Hakeem Olajuwon: 29 points, 13 rebounds, 14/24 FG.
    Ralph Sampson: 32 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists, 14/23 FG.
    Kareem Abdul Jabbar: 35 points, 7 rebounds, 17/26 FG.
    Magic Johnson 18 points, 14 assists, 6/11 FG.
    Great battle in the paint between 38-year-old Jabbar and young ''Twin Towers'', Olajuwon and Sampson.
    Lakers won the game 120:112.

    With the loss of MacAdoo, the Lakers were severely lacking in the power forward position for '85-86. Rambis was a workhorse, but undersized and lacked a post-game. Maurice Lucas was toxic to team chemistry, and a bad knee-injury rendered Kupchak ineffective.

    That same year this young Rockets beat the Lakers 4-1 in the playoffs. It was Olajuwon’s second season. If Sampson didn’t get injured the following season, and eventually getting traded, Rockets would’ve been the team of the West.
    It’s incredible that Olajuwon is still new to basketball here (5-6 years) so he’s still learning. Yet he’s excellent regardless.

    • @rocketmank8584
      @rocketmank8584 3 года назад

      Sampson's injury was a big factor, but you're forgetting the drug suspension to Lucas, Wiggins, and Lloyd at the beginning of the following season that absolutely derailed this team.

    • @timmyg831
      @timmyg831 3 года назад +1

      @@rocketmank8584 ...Yes I remember those drug suspensions. The Rockets wasted Olajuwon’s great years from mid 80s to very early 90s, by not surrounding him with all-star players. His prime years started in the late 80s but his teams were even weaker than his championship teams. So I blame the Rockets for not making it possible for Olajuwon to win more.
      Lakers made it possible for Kareem to win a lot by making a super team so he’s now considered a top tier player. Switch teams (Kareem to Rockets and Olajuwon to Lakers) and guess what, Olajuwon would be considered almost up there with Jordan. Funny how that works. Skills and talent wise Olajuwon would’ve provided much more to that Showtime Lakers. And Kareem, even in his prime, wouldn’t be able to win a championship without an all-star teammate like Olajuwon did.

    • @tyjohnson3111
      @tyjohnson3111 2 года назад

      @@timmyg831 I disagree with that. Kareem got to 2 Conference Finals in 70’ as a rookie without Oscar and 77’ in the 1st Year Post Merger without Magic.
      Hakeem’s championship teams were based off of 3PT shooting that created spacing for Hakeem to operate in isolate to play-make or score depending of the given defense during a possession.
      Hakeem was never the playmaker Kareem was and that’s evident in their careers if you actually watch and attach the numbers to it.
      Kareem would have been even MORE dominant with a 3PT line and there’s evidence of that in the exhibitions they played pre merger.

    • @timmyg831
      @timmyg831 2 года назад

      @@tyjohnson3111 …Oh wow that made me laugh. Kareem never had to be a playmaker cause he had the greatest playmaker in history. And he also had the great O for a while too. Hakeem in the 70s would have been even a worse playmaker than he already was in the 90s. He’s not on the level of playmaking as Kareem is.
      Blame the West Teams in 84’ & 87’ for getting upset 🤣🤣🤣🤣 that’s definitely Kareem’s fault. Maybe the bigs were in the other conference to not see him as many times as they would in conference genius.
      Hakeem had Kenny and an offense that was based off of Hakeem’s reads in isolation to self-create or create enough gravity on himself to generate looks for 3s. Kenny was also the primary playmaker for that run they had between 93’-96’. Even in ‘95 Clyde as the newcomer was arguably the better playmaker. Hakeem was always best in a secondary playmaking role behind a lead guard who wasn’t necessarily shot-first. You could even argue for him being more optimal in a tertiary role…
      After Sampson finally left broken down in 88’, it took a couple of years for the Rockets offense to change and be at the top of the league in terms of 3PM & 3PA.
      Hakeem lost 4 consecutive first rounds from 1988-1991 (missed the playoffs in 1992 by a game) after losing Sampson who would have been their best player had he stayed healthy and led Hakeem mold himself slowly.
      He had one great series of 38/17/2/2/3 against the 1988 Mavs on 64% TS; leading his team in FGA.
      He also had a terrible series of 19/12/2/3/6 against the 1990 Lakers (1st Year No KAJ) on 48% TS, didn’t even lead his team in FGA, and was 2nd in TOV.
      The Rockets from 1991-1999 were always Top 3 in 3PM & 3PA per game.
      The average of 3PM/3PA per game ranged from 2-5 3PM/7-13 3PA in those nine seasons.
      The Rockets ranged from 4-8 3PM/12-22 3PA per game in those nine seasons.
      You switched from Fitch to Chaney to Rudy T as your head coach remember?
      Hakeem is not the greatest big man passer. That’s actually asinine to believe. Seriously. The man has NEVER CRACKED 300 AST IN A SEASON. ARE WE JOKING NOW?????
      He’s never averaged over 5 APG in a regular season or eclipsed 300 AST.
      Hakeem’s Championship teams ranked in the top 10 in AST; having five/six of his teammates in the top 100 in 3PM & 3PA.
      In the 80s, Hakeem had some of the leftover core from the Moses era (1977-82’) of the Rockets (Reid, Lucas, Leavell).
      Moses leaves for Philly in 1983 and that caused the team to bottom out at 14-68, after 4 consecutive 40+ win seasons (1981 40-42 NBA Finalist).
      This leads to Sampson & McCray get drafted in 1984 as well as picking up another piece of the Hakeem 80’s core in Lewis Lloyd.
      Hakeem comes in 1985 and the Rockets get upset by Dantley/Eaton’s Jazz in the 1st Round.
      In 1986 Kareem has to face his 4th double big pairing of his career in the last stage of his prime and holds his own.
      He won MVPs without HOFs and All Stars. Jerry West is not a HOF Coach. And Kareem would have had more space to operate with a 3PT line and more opportunities to kick out to 3PT shooters better than Hakeem could.
      Hakeem missed the playoffs in 92’ and barely got in on a tiebreaker in 90’.
      You actually haven’t proven anything with the lack of context you have on those seasons. This is light for me.
      If you actually watched them both play, you’d never utter that out your mouth. To say Kareem didn’t have the moves Hakeem had is asinine.
      Domination isn’t 6 MVPs in 10 seasons? Domination isn’t 17 All-NBA caliber seasons along with 15 Top 5 MVPs finishes?
      Domination isn’t going from 29/15/4 on 55% TS to 35/17/4 on 61% TS as a rookie without Oscar?
      Domination isn’t going from 25/13/5/1/3 on 60% TS to 31/15/4/1/4 on 63% TS without ANY ALL STAR HELP as a Laker before Magic?
      Domination isn’t going from 23/8/3/1/2 on 62% TS to 25/9/4/1/3 on 59% TS while sharing a 1 WIN SHARE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 80’-86’ WITH MAGIC AS THE PRIMARY SCORING OPTION?
      When you think of Hakeem, you think of how he missed his golden opportunity with Ralph and in turned suffered 4 1st Round Losses in a row. You think of MJ not being in the league while being the best player in the world.

    Kareem getting it done one on one. I remember a prime Kobe with shaq and Barkley would say Kobe's not the best one on one player he's the best one on one player that gets to play one on one. When you have a stacked team this is possible. it was just Hakeem and Ralph against a dynasty. Please believe that if Hakeem got to play Kareem one on one at this stage without three or four guys hanging on to him with all the no calls in the games they played. They would have to sit his behind down or he would foul out getting dunked on.
