how do you feel about the new school of Afrobeats mixing with Caribbean music especially Dancehall? is it okay to not give the West Indies credit? or to give indigenous genres of music credit in general?
yeaa it is evident in a lot of Afrobeat songs that they have incorporated Dancehall music into their own in some sort of way but I won't be ignorant and say that all Afrobeat artists are doing it. I feel its more common with Uk Afrobeat musicians and thats okay because the 'urban' subculture within London is highly influenced by Caribbeans and Americans especially when it comes to music. I often notice that the beat patterns and basslines are the same as the ones used in Dancehall music. Many say that the new school of Afrobeats sounds like a fusion between Afrobeats, Hiphop and Dancehall. One producer called it 'Afro-bashment'. I have also noticed Wizkid and a handful of artists from various countries in Africa been doing it too. In my opinion, 'Come Closer' by Wizkid is a fusion of Afrobeats and Dancehall but it is referred to as a Afrobeat track. I have no problem with them using it but say for instance if I was a Jamaican artist and i started fusing the Afrobeat style with Dancehall music and when asked what it is i deny that i did not use various Afrobeat styles and said that this is the new wave of Dancehall music. I'm sure it would cause an uproar in Africa that we stole their style etc. no?......its just like when Drake uses Dancehall music but the song he creates is still referred to as a HipHop track. like that is disrespectful. Like give credit where its due. no? or am i wrong?....When smaller genres of music use HipHop you can credit it but everyone knows hiphop and are able to recognise it when its used. but when you are using a genre of music that is not known by the masses i feel you should credit it.
That is what Genre Yxng Bane is in, the young people mix Afrobeats with Caribbean music. Same as Machel Montano (Trinidadian artist) and Timaya (Nigerian) . They collab the two genres and made something really cool.
its very cool. I love it actually. We should work together more often. We all know there is this friction between the Caribbean and Africa but i think doing this helps to bridge that gap between us. Hopefully could help in doing more business with each other and help us to grow and improve both industries. Because our colonial counterparts are not investing in us so we should invest in each other (even though Africa has more to offer lol). The only problem i see is that the genre should be credited and not only regarded as being Afrobeats. Like every West African person i speak to refuse to acknowledge that the new school of Afrobeats is merging with Dancehall music. They even refuse to acknowledge it being mixed with HipHop. U know what they say to counter my argument....."Afrobeats/Afropop evolved" nothing can evolve without something changing....just like Dancehall evolved because of technology, electronic music, R&B, Hiphop, various Caribbean genres, boycotting the use of real instruments in their music etc.

@Dominion Ogunjinrin Afrobeat began in Ghana in the early 1920s. During that time, Ghanaian musicians incorporated foreign influences like the foxtrot and calypso with Ghanaian rhythms like osibisaba (Fante). Highlife was associated with the local African aristocracy during the colonial period and was played by numerous bands including the Jazz Kings, Cape Coast Sugar Babies, and Accra Orchestra along the country's coast. Nigeria later joined the Afrobeat wave in the late 60s led by Fela Kuti who experimented with different contemporary music of the time. Upon arriving in Nigeria, Kuti also changed the name of his group to Africa '70.
@Dominion Ogunjinrin learn n do ur research well. We know ur leaders have being lying to you since. How can Fela be founder of genre that is older than him. Afrobeat was in Ghana since 1920s. Put down ur ego n learn.
