Cool! Curious about the Puny-runes although I don’t think I could use one. Sorry for my spelling. The Pixel Hugs sounds interesting too.

i have the punirunes already! i got the japanese version imported, it’s kind of like a tamagotchi, but with a larger emphasis on raising/collecting many characters instead of focusing on taking care of it well. it’s also far more lenient - there is technically a “lose condition” for not taking care of the character, but it’s not it dying, but rather it melting, and you can easily knead it back into shape and there’s no punishment. i think it’s fun, but the actual game inside gets pretty boring after a while. the little hole you stick your finger into, though, is still a really fun gimmick - sometimes i’ll just reach in there and pet the little thing, then just move on with my day.
…but i’ll usually do it with it off, because the thing has background music that plays while it’s on. it’s not bad, but it can get on your nerves. i forget if you can turn it off without completely turning off sound but just be aware of it.
p.s. the only thing in the hole is a little button that can rock in any direction - kind of like a d-pad on a game controller. the cover on top (i won’t spoil how it feels!) can “deflate” (i can’t really think of a better word for it) if you push too hard on it, and as far as i can tell there is no way to replace it without sending it in or taking it apart, which im not sure you can do non-destructively.
just letting you know what to expect, ill leave the other surprises to you!

Thanks so much for the information I really appreciate it! Punirunes being released here as well as Bitzee got me interested in virtual pets & I came across Summiko Friend - do know that one ? I liked it so much I’ve preordered the new one from Amazon Japan. I love how when you put a cover on it the screen becomes a face & you can interact with it & pet it with the touch sensor on top.

oh yeah, i’ve seen that - the summiko friend is actually based on a set of characters by san-x (different from sanrio, who made hello kitty, which took me way too long to find out) called summiko gurashi, and there’s around 6 other summiko gurashi digital toys as well! it looks like most of them are based solely around collecting characters (seems like most of said characters are variants of the same 6 main characters with a couple minor characters in there too), but there are some with a focus on interacting with them - it looks like there’s one called the summiko catch that uses different sticks to interact with the characters, and one that you can fill up with water to… fill the virtual room up with water as well.
i dont actually know anything about summiko gurashi itself other than what you can find at a cursory glance, but what i can gather is that it’s a group of characters who all share the same personality trait of very shy and not liking to be in the center of attention, as suggested by the literal translation of summiko gurashi, “life in the corner.” feels a bit counterintuitive to make a bunch of toys where you give them attention, but best not to think about it i guess???
by the way while looking at the summiko friend plus i noticed they released what could be best described as a sequel to the original punirunes (and punirunes+, which looks like it’s the version they’re localizing, and was also originally released to tie into a tv show… apparently this is that popular) back in march. it’s called the… uhhhh…
punirunes punitomo tsushin. long name aside, the main feature is the ability for it to communicate with other units so they can visit each other. it also looks like a character will visit daily, signaled by a light-up antenna (which to me, looks more like one of those rotating alarm lights on emergency vehicles… seems like a little bit much). it can also pick up special audio signals from videos tomy releases on youtube so that characters that show up in the video will show up on the device. (this feels like it’s meant to tie more into that tv show i mentioned.) it seems to be doing well, and it makes me wonder that if the punirunes sells well here, maybe we’ll get that version too. (maybe even the tv show? doesn’t seem likely, but who knows).
wow, this comment ended up being way longer than i expected lol. can’t wait for your review (and reaction!) to the punirunes, it’s such a cute little device. you and paul had the pronunciation just right, by the way!
as one last aside, be warned that it does take around a day or two for a character to fully turn into an adult on the punirunes, so give it time! this comment is way too long now im stopping myself here

@@Absolute_LUNA-C I honestly find the whole thing fascinating. It’s a whole world I was totally unaware of. I discovered the Summiko when I was looking for videos of the Punirunes & was instantly attracted to the idea of having the “friend” mode so I did dig a little deeper & looked up the background on Wikipedia & after finding out about the characters I watched some short animations with subtitles & found them absolutely delightful, particularly Neko not being adopted because he liked his food & was a chubby kitty 🥹. Then when I found out that the new release has the addition of Neko that nailed it. Paul was really surprised when I said I wanted to get it & said “but I didn’t think you were into playing games” but the games part totally doesn’t interest me. I’d be quite happy just buying Neko & the others toys, watching them play with them & interacting with the “friend”. It reminds me a bit of the Tobi watch where you have all the stuff you can do with the watch but then you still have the little character you can interact with. I just hope one day they’ll introduce a mic so they can respond to you that way like Tobi does.
