Thank you! I am from a ghost town in eastern Oregon, its 5,500’ up in the mountains, so we only go half the yr. We take drives every evening to watch the wildlife. You can see herds of 700-800 elk in these beautiful high mountain meadows. I am 68 and have see this gorgeous site all my life. It is spectacular. I have even seen a big herd of elk swimming across a bay on the OR coast. Grateful and blessed to live in such a beautiful state!!!

What an awesome sight! My first summer job in college was as a student trainee at the Nat’l Elk Refuge in 1963. One week there and I was hooked for life on a career in wildlife refuge management. Jackson, at that time, was strictly a tourist way-stop on the road to Yellowstone Park. After Labor Day, the town rolled up the sidewalks and nailed plywood over the motel windows. Such a different place now. Thanks for the video.
In my living in Montana for 42 years, I’ve only seen something like this once. A herd of about 1000 elk crossed Highway 200 by Ovando. It was unbelievable.
I saw this just once in arkansas in early november. Most amazing thing ever. The landowners opened there gates for the elk to do there run. This is a wonderful thing to see
We ran into a herd very similar to this one years ago. Just East of Snow lake in New Mexico. Back before the age of the cellphone and easy pictures.😊 Elk on the move are always a sight to behold.

You really want an Elk? Hunt with horses. You cover 10X times or more ground, and when you get one, you have the game bags over your saddle, and it's much easier to get them out. I got 5 elk over my hunting career, and having horses was the difference maker. You get past where everyone else is, and find the animals literally goofing off. The problems now days are the wolves, and the elk bunch up like this, because there is safety in numbers and hundreds of sets of eyes watching out for danger. Because of the wolves, they have made it a needle in a haystack proposition. All or nothing.

Jackson hole used to be the elk wintering grounds from all the mountains surrounding jackson hole.....then everyone discovered this beautiful place.in the late 60's jackson hole wintered about 900 people. There was 1 cafe and all the shops would be closed. THEN the ritzys moved in , then the millionaires thought they would love to have play estates there, THEN the billionaires run the spoiled millionaires out . Now you can't find anyplace to rent maybe if you want to pay $2500 a month for a single bed shack. everyone commutes from Idaho. GREED and the rick snobs have ruined a once untamed wonderland.

Incredible, as an Aussie I had heard of the winter migration of Wapiti to Jackson Hole. A sight like this was certainly not imagined. This scene being a similarity to Caribou on their migration.
Finally ! A reality I can live with ! Ah Yes ! I remember it well...My buddy Gary and I crawling up to a fence through 3 ft of snow in a field in Alberta. We thought they were all Muley does...and then the sun broke thru the clouds...-20F was like a spring day ! And then , the Bull raised it's head...We counted about 30 cows and yearlings. Best meat you will ever taste and so much energy ! The original Happy Meal !

I have seen two herds of elk converge from different sides of a mountain in Colorado. I was about halfway up that mountain and it was one of the most awesome sights I had ever seen. Nothing like this, totaling maybe two hundred after the herds joined.

Thx for the reminder...lived 8 years in Bondurant Wyoming working on a ranch w 300 head of Bison. It was 45 minutes east of Jackson...the elk are a sight to see 👍
Here in Yakima County, what would be winter territory is occupied by orchards mostly. We set up elk fence and feeding areas so we could winter over more animals than the available habitat could support. It is called management, management requires a lot of consideration of multiple factors. I trust the pros who dedicate themselves to finding the best path.
Don’t know if they still do it, but years ago you could take a sleigh ride in the winter out onto the Jackson Hole elk refuge. The elk got so used to it that the horses and sleigh could just mosey around in the middle of the herd. I got to do that one time; the coldest and most memorable hour I’ve ever spent.
Get out and see it! I'm a city boy myself suburbs of Los Angeles but I grew up traveling California in a 1962 GMC CAB OVER CAMPER... I took a construction career and I've been lucky enough to drive coast to coast for work. One time while traveling to Washington DC from California I decided to take Hwy 50 " The Loneliest Hwy in America" while driving through the mountains in Nevada just before I got to the summit a big sign in the side of the road read " DON'T SHOOT ELK STANDING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD!" it was very slow driving lots of turns ... about half mile past that sign there were about 300 Elk standing on the side of the road! Some huge Bulls too! It was pretty amazing!
I spend quite a few weeks every summer in Yellowstone and the elk are probably my favorite thing to watch and follow because I know the predators aren't far behind. I hope to see the elk migration into Jackson one day, it's always been a dream of mine
WOW, don't get to experience that to often. Although this year I've seen more elk than I have in years! The elk are moving lower every year, wolves, bears. I don't know.
If this were my state the fish and game would look at this video and say “Yep, bull to cow ratio is exactly where we want it. Let’s keep selling unlimited antlered elk permits.”
@@ribo451 a lot of the bulls are in separate herd after the rut. A few bigger bulls in this herd. I missed the four biggest while I was pull off to the side of the road.

Quite a few nice-sized racks in that herd!! I used to drive a big truck OTR, and loved seeing the Elk, Mule Deer, Big Horn Sheep, etc!!!

I spend quite a few weeks every summer in Yellowstone and the elk are probably my favorite thing to watch and follow because I know the predators aren't far behind. I hope to see the elk migration into Jackson one day, it's always been a dream of mine

Although this year I've seen more elk than I have in years! The elk are moving lower every year, wolves, bears. I don't know.

@@ribo451 a lot of the bulls are in separate herd after the rut. A few bigger bulls in this herd. I missed the four biggest while I was pull off to the side of the road.
