Vârghiș Gorges, an easy hiking route

- 🔴 EN The Vârghișului Gorges nature reserve is located at the southern border of Harghita county with Covasna county, in the northern part of the Perșani Mountains, and is crossed by the Vârghișului valley that springs from the Harghita Mountains.
You can get here, either coming from the village of Merești (Harghita), or from Vârghiș (Covasna).
We opted for the second option.

The car park is located next to the tourist information center.
From the barrier, about 200 m to the entrance to the gorges.
The route is very well marked with a blue cross, but you can't get lost anyway. Go on the water ...
Accessibility: all year round
Recommendations: appropriate equipment
Round trip duration: approx. 5 hours
Length: approx. 4 km/way (8 km round trip)
Difficulty: easy / medium
Vârghiș Gorges are located approximately 12 km from Vârghiș, at the end of an asphalt road, but narrow and approx. 2 km of the unpaved road but practicable for any kind of car.
Although we have not heard of this route, it seems that it is very well known and loved by nature-lovers.
Lots of people. Few bears ... only on the warning signs.
The route resembles the one from Cheile Zănoagei to Scropoasa Lake, from the Bucegi mountains.
Șura Cailor Cave is located just before the third bridge. It's hard to miss, being on the road.
If you turn a few meters on the road you came, you will see the path that goes up to the Tartar Cave. After the rain, the path can be quite slippery, but it is worth it, being the most spectacular of the three caves. Here you need tight boots and downhill trekking poles. It is the most difficult part of the route.
After the third bridge, to the right, you will find the Great Cave of Merești or Orbán Balázs.
It's not electrified either, and you'll need a front end to explore it. It has no stalactites or stalagmites, but it is beautiful. It is one of the longest in the Eastern Carpathians (1800 meters), with a level difference of 50 m, of which you can visit only 900 m without speleological equipment and only accompanied by a guide.
Cave The Great Cave of Merești (Orbán Balázs) is one of the most important bat shelters in Transylvania. Here, the number of species, as well as the number of individuals in each species, differs depending on the time of year.
After the Great Cave from Merești, you have to go back to the fork near bridge number 3 and continue on the blue cross marking.
From now on, all you have to do is stay on the trail and enjoy the scenery along the way.
I read that the area is fantastic in the fall ... so maybe we'll be back ...
