  • Story by John Kilburn:
Umesh Jadia, (with the Katch Museum), came to me in the spring of 2003 while I was staying at the Navjivan Nature Cure Center near Bhuj, Katch, in the state of Gujarat, India.
In response to the devastating earthquake that had destroyed most of Umesh's collection of the recordings of the local musicians, we created a gathering of some of the regions wonderful local musicians to do a video recording by Kristin English and Geoff Richcreek to help preserve this great cultural musical tradition.
I recently obtained the original footage of the 2 camera shoot we did, and I am releasing all the tracks one by one, to share the simple purity of this beautiful music.
This track is solo Jodia Pawa performed by Noormamad Fakirmamad Sodha, who has incredible circular breathing technique. The scale of his flute is a dorian pentatonic on the root note E:
E F# A B D (R 2nd 4th 5th b7). Note that there is no 3rd in the scale. This creates a very open sound that the player improvises over the E drone.
