    Fort Montgomery was originally built in 1816 to aid in the defense against British Canada. Due to a survey error it was found to have been built on Canadian Soil. All construction ceased and the site abandoned.
    In 1842 the border line error cleared up they started construction of the 2nd fort in 1844. This error nicknamed the site “Fort Blunder”
    The new fort was in use till 1880, then mostly abandoned. In 1926 the US government auctioned off the site and land. In 1936 most of the fort was crushed into fill to construct the nearby bridge between Vermont and New York. In 1983 it was purchased by Victor Podd. Podd worked with local historical societies to put the site in the state of New York’s possession. With hopes it would be restored. Despite being offer the site at no cost, a deal could not be reached. The site is still owned by the Podd Heirs and is currently for sale. Just under 1 million and it could be all yours.
    This fort has been on my bucket list since I was a teenager. Catching first glimpse of it crossing the bridge over to Rouses Point, NY
    This one was special.

    Wonderful video. Thanks for historic detail. Visited a couple times in the 1960's when I lived in St Albans but never knew the background.

      Thanks so much. Same here, I wondered for half my life. Yes you can but it is under watch quite a bit these days. Game cameras everywhere. I’m not sure how we didn’t get stopped. It was a very early morning in December.

    Ever since i saw this place for sale I’ve been wanting to buy it and turn it into a personal home, i know its not what most people want with the fort but id restore the exterior as much as possible and change the interior to a cozy home based off of the year the fort was built

    Watching this takes me back to my younger days. As a native of RP I went to the Fort in the mid 1970ies quite a lot simple because it was something to do.

      @@oldwoodentrunkadventures Back in the 70ies it was easily accessible and lots of people would frequent the ole Fort. For me learning the history of it being partially destroyed is upsetting, it could have been used as a tourist attraction for all to see similar to Fort Ticonderoga.

    Just imagine the first person in that fort with a metal detector. It must have been a gold mine. All those dropped early eighteen-hundreds coins

    Always wanted to see what that fort looked like. When I go up through there to Burlington I see this fort from the bridge. It's a shame that our own government let this beautiful fort go by the wayside. The politicians that run our government love to spend the taxpayers money on other stupid things. Instead of keeping this fort as a national monument. Our government should be ashamed of themselves. They let alot of old navy ships go for scrap. Shameful. I know not everything can be saved but this fort should have what a shame. A sad day in our nation to see this. Thanks for sharing the video. God bless Dave bkackburn

      Same here. I had saw it so many times crossing that bridge. So many questions as a kid. It should be preserved, even what’s left. Shame it was auctioned off to the public. Should be a state park like Crown Point or the other Star Forts of the world. It’s a beautiful place. Thanks for watching and the feedback.

    This is Fort Montgomery, not Fort Blunder! The original location was . 75 miles north and after the treaty was found to be on Canadian soil, therefore the misnomer of "Fort Blunder!"
    But it is strictly private property and no one is allowed there!!

  • @mpa417
    @mpa417 3 года назад +1

    There's unfortunately not a lot left of the original fort much of it was hauled away and used as fill for the bridge between Alburgh VT and Rouses point N , . Sadly nobody saw the historical significance of the ruins back then.

    • @oldwoodentrunkadventures
      @oldwoodentrunkadventures  3 года назад +1

      I saw pictures of it in the 1930’s when it was still mostly intact. Doors and windows broken and it had been abandoned for years, but it could have been saved then. Very sad they tore it apart for bridge fill. At one time they even tried to donate it to the State of NY for historical preservation but the state had no interest in the property.
