  • Created for the opening ceremony of 2017 Hull City of Culture, this film takes Shane Rhodes' poem about the history of Hull and its people and attempts to reflect the words by showing the city and citizens as they are in the present day.
Avoiding many over-familiar buildings, the constantly-moving shots are intended to give a pavement level view of the city, just as any Hullensian has had over the past couple of centuries. (All elevated footage is shot from the roof of Holy Trinity church, which is specifically mentioned in the poem)
Where the poem tells the story of Hull's past, he film is intended to show the city as it is now. The people featured in the film were selected randomly so that they reflect the actual citizens of the city.
The film was made entirely by people born and raised in Hull. Shane Rhodes is a poet and publisher, Dave Lee is a TV producer, writer and film-maker, Steve Cobby is a musician, DJ and producer and Stan Haywood is an actor.
