When I first heard "Don't Blame Me", I thought Taylor must be covering another artist's song, because it's so soulful. It's another great example of what an incredible songwriter and performer Taylor is. Her singing was extremely clear and good before, and nowadays it's become noticeably better. I think we're still witnessing her ascent.
Experiencing “Don’t Blame Me” live on the 6th was an absolutely out of this world experience! Taylor taking a full stadium of 70,000 people to church was insane and is forever ingrained in my brain.
She is considered a good singer with a vocal range of A2 - E6 (3 octaves 6 notes ). It was D3- G5 (2 octaves 3 notes) when she started, but she since matured and has trained extensively. However, her octave range is just part of her vocal skill. Her ability to speak passion, sorrow, joy, pain and more into her songs gives them an emotional depth and presence that comes across to the listener in sound and emotion. Your ears hear it, your heart feels it. 'Say Don't Go' is my current favorite that really exemplifies this amazing ability of hers. However, 'Don't Blame Me' is the song that got me first. Heard it on the radio, found out who wrote it, watched Reputation Tour on Netflix and I was hooked for life. It's still on constant repeat in my daily playlist.
This is one of those songs that gives me goosebumps no matter how many times I hear it. Especially this performance when she puts her arms up and the background singers come in.
that spectacled fan singing 'trip of my life, oh!' always gets me.. it's my fav thing to see everytime i watch this performance, they really acted the way i feel listening to this song.
Max Martin is the producer with her. He has written or co-written 25 billboard top hot 100 songs. He's considered one of the world's most successful producers. He's Swedish. Thanks for returning to Taylor, Nick. Just a side note, she had a cold during this performance.
It is however publicly known the last years that Max Martin demands writing credits on All songs he produces, even when he doesn´t write any part of the song itself, just producing it. That is why not many want to work with him anymore... This also came to the front during Taylor´s "Shake it Off "Copyright lawsuit. He was credited as a songwriter with Taylor on that song, but had to write a letter to court telling them that in actuality he didn´t write the song and therefore was not part of the lawsuit.. So yes, he is a producer and a great one, and has written many songs, but the credits are not always telling the truth when it comes to him.
@@yara5502 which in all honesty, makes sense though considering sometimes he completely changes and elevates songs. He is a genius and honestly at his level it makes sense to do so
I agree, Max Martin does do that and has a very big ego but he's without a doubt along with George Martin (produced most of The Beatles songs) a top 3 pop producer of all time.
The tired old criticism about Taylor not being able to sing comes from the worst performance of her life (all artists have a few bad ones, even Freddy Mercury sang off key a few times). It was in 2010 when she won album of the Year for Fearless and sang a duet with Stevie Nicks at the Grammys. Sadly Taylor was incredibly nervous, couldn't hear herself and sang off key while Stevie sounded great. That performance coupled with jealousy and misogyny at her for being (at the time) the youngest female singer-songwriter to win a Grammy for album of the year brought a LOT of harsh criticism form the press, including that she was a bad singer and that she didn't write her own music. Taylor responded by Taylor a lot of vocal lessons and practicing until she became twice as good (or more) at live singing and made her write solo all of her Speak Now album the only one she has done with zero co-writers. In that album she wrote the song Mean about her biggest critic and ended up winning a Grammy for that song.
I think you just watched the creation of a masterpiece. To me, this performance of "Don't Blame Me" still gives me chills, and is so powerful, like a compressed "Jesus Christ Superstar", which was a play from the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. My dad listened to the JCS album so many times when I was growing up. Taylor's final product makes me think that she would probably be a great playwright too. And it makes me think about Taylor creating a rock opera album, like "The Wall" by Pink Floyd and "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia" by The Who. Folklore and Evermore gave us a taste of Taylor writing albums with intertwined character stories, so I think a Taylor Swift rock opera would be awesome.
Definitely is a love song to Joe- and also, the "older guys" she references at the start, I don't think are referencing her relationships from many years before this, I think it's directly about Tom Hiddleston who she briefly dated during the summer of 2016 but he was just a 'getaway car' [excellent song of hers]/rebound after Calvin Harris. He was just a plaything to use, but then her feelings for Joe came on STRONG and couldn't be repressed
Always seemed like she was perhaps referencing Calvin Harris as well, given how acrimonious their split seemed to be. That said, some of the meaning Nick took from it might not be off base - It’s not unusual for TS’s songs to have multiple possible interpretations. But definitely true that as on point as songs like LWYMMD and IDSB are, most of the songs on Rep seem to be love songs.
She met Joe during the Reputation era. People who like Whitney Houston, and Celine Dion, basically are the kind of people who say Taylor can't sing, and those who just remember baby Taylor. Personally, I don't care for singers who do a lot of runs like Whitney and Celine, no offense to those who love them.
I have spent some time in a music studio, watching the process of recording a studio album. Such "scratch tracks" while the artist is working out what they want the song to be, is fascinating and one of my favorite parts of the artistic process.
I love the person who puts these together for you. The full effect of watching her take this baby seed of a song from just her and a piano to the massive production on tour is mind blowing. A lot of times she has that all in her head from the very beginning - what she wants the production to sound like and how she wants to perform it live. She's involved in every single aspect of writing and producing her music, and it's infuriating to hear people dismiss her talent. She comes up with the concept for every concert too, from the stages to the costumes, etc. Did you notice the whole stage is shaped like a snake? Google #TaylorSwiftIsOverParty if you need context. It's awful. She is the Queen of taking all the nasty shit people say about her and spinning it into gold. This is a top tier song for me, and I still get goosebumps watching this performance. I felt like I was showing this to a friend for the first time cause your reactions were so satisfying. Have you watched I Did Something Bad from the Rep tour yet? If not, please get the legend who made this video do the same thing for that one because WOAH.
Taylor is Raw talent. She never dresses like a slut she's sexy with class. Her performances are based on her voice her sets are awesome and it all comes together perfectly. She's a Guinness with a pen and paper. This song is so smooth ❤
Great reaction as always! It's such a joy to witness her genius in real time. For context, this is a Reputation song. She wrote the album after the Kim & Kanye mess that caused her cancellation in 2016. She was dating Calvin Harris (older guy) in 2015 & 16 but felt unappreciated and wanted out. She met Tom Hiddleston (and Joe) at the MET Gala in May 2016 and used Tom (also an older guy) as a rebound/escape from Calvin that summer. After she dropped Tom, she started her relationship with Joe, mostly while in hiding from the media. All love songs on Reputation (and Lover) were written about Joe. There is another Rep song, King of My Heart, where she says "Cause all the boys and their expensive cars, With their Range Rovers and their Jaguars, Never took me quite where you do." I believe those were the cars driven by Calvin and Tom, so it's likely they are the "older guys" she's referencing here as well. In ...Ready for It she describes Joe as "younger than my exes but he act like such a man so", another reference to these two older recent exes at the time, but of course these lines can hearken back to Jake and John as well.
She could always sing good and loaded with talent, but she's a serious vocalist now. Her writing ability is insane, (I'm an author and so intrigued by her) vocals top notch, she produces, and she's turned into an epic performer. ❤TS❤
Nick, go find Blank Space live at the Grammy Museum; Taylor has invented a persona based on the false media narrative about her. There is also a "Grammy Pro" interview (Production Wing of the Grammy Awards) where she describes her progress of making albums, leading up to 1989. It will give you a lot more insight into what she is writing about.
Nick, I love your deep dives, thoughtful analysis, and hunger to know more about the artist--instead of treating Taylor Swift's videos as mostly entertainment, like some other reactors do. Because of recall flaws that almost everyone has, it's very difficult to dissect a song in real time and get it completely right. You have surprisingly few bad dissections, and you catch most if not all of them before the end. It's a good thing most lines repeat. 😄 So, Nick, you're doing a great job in these Taylor Swift reaction videos! 💯 And so far, like you said, you're being supplied great Taylor Swift videos. 💯
This is a contender for my favorite TS song. Love how you appreciate the process. The live performance is next level, though. Agreed, how do people dismiss her vocals???
Buddy, every romantic song in reputation and lover albums are for her bf Joe Alwyn. They have been together for 7 years now.Even though we thought reputation album was her revenge album, it was also a lover letter for Joe. Moreover she dedicated the whole Lover album for him. And some other songs in her later albums like willow, invisible string, Paris, sweet nothing, peace, mastermind etc. And they even co wrote some songs in the albums folklore, evermore and midnights. He uses the name William Bowery and Taylor revealed that. They wrote champagne problems, Exile, sweet nothing, coney Island, etc which are the most iconic and heartbreaking songs in the entire album. They said it was fun to write heartbreaking songs while in a happy relationship. Now Joe is a Grammy winner. Everyone say they broke up on last month but I'm in delusion. You should react to mastermind next. Love your reactions.
@@ramaninawarathna2420 she even deleted the reel where she talked about lavender haze and their relationship... the only case in which they would do this is if they're trying to get married without noise but even that is a bit too much, I really think they have broken up but honestly from what we know they gave each other good years so at least they got that
It sucks but we will never know the truth. I just want her to be truly happy. When someone drops to the knee and asks no second guessing she just knows. I think her level of Fandom is more than most could handle. And I think that stinks. This is one of my favorite songs!
I think the people who claim she can't sing only heard her live in her early days. She wasn't always this good live, but she worked really hard at improving and the results here show it.
Don't Blame Me is the central epitome of what reputation is. Nick Forell doing the gesture sign at 3:01 to compliment Taylor's work into making lyrics coming out of her mouth is literally the same mood as mine hahahaha I love it!!!
I think you missed something here. From all we know about her John Mayer and Jake Gyllenhaal definitely weren't just playthings or toys for her, if anything they hurt her by treating HER like that. The first verse is told ironically adressing the media who make her out to be like this. "Don't blame me, love made me crazy" is to the media saying "hey, I'm just tryna have a love live can you stop blaming me for that?"
Now that you have heard Don't Blame Me, check out the Don't Blame Me/Look What You Made Me Do perfromacne from Eras Tour. The Transition from Blame into Look is one of her best ever.
You should react to don’t blame me/look what you made me do on the eras tour… it’s just as good but the inclusion and transition to look what you made me do is insane
This is a great video!! I love seeing your reactions as someone who appreciates Taylor but doesn't worship her (yet lmao). Me and the Swifties are always out here like "OBVIOUSLY this means this", and "this is about this" etc; - but hearing your fresh reactions puts such a wonderful new perspective on everything!! Thank you so much for your videos.
who she is with: The two people in the studio are Max Martin and Johan Shellback; they co-wrote /produced IKYWT, WANEGBT, and 22 on Red; co-executive produced the 1989 album, and the Reputation album (mostly the first half; Jack Antonoff did more of the later part). This is their LA studio.
This is very very bluesy, smooth jazzy, UTTERLY different for her and she NAILS it. It sounds like songs of yesteryear by the BEST, and Taylor certainly fits into that category. I'd love to hear her do this song as a duet with another great female artist like Beyonce , Billie Eilish or Katie Perry, OMG, Lady Gaga!!! It'll be fun if fun at or she picked a different fabulous woman to sing this song with every time because it's an amazing, amazing some. Your views are my very favorite I love the way you review music you're the absolute best, I'm prescribed I rang the bell, for me you're the best Mr. Forell! Well done, as usual!!
This was so good live in a huge stadium! The whole Rep tour was kind of mind blowing. But to be fair, this live video was from a Netflix special where they did clean up her voice a bit. She is not always this flawless live. But she’s authentic and I value that so much more.
@@nickforell1 cool. Awesome! The love performance is so good. In general her live performances are better than the album version in my opinion. Just a little question, did you hear her song Anti Hero? I'm asking for this month requests that I want to edit. Enjoy your vacation 😊
Sadly, the force behind so many of these incredible songs has come to an end after 6 quiet years together. We love you, Taylor! She is talking about her ex Joe Alwyn 💙
You should react Out off the woods from 1989 world tour as well as tour Enchanted/Wildest Dream also from 1989 world . Her vocals and performance on that is beyond amazing.
I love all your reactions, I don’t know what is but your voice is unique and the way you speak… it always sounds like your battling a cold or you have allergies. But it’s so adorbs! Lol
The dancers on this song are either a Cobra or Viper. This is from the Reputation album. The two idiots who lied about Taylor with an illegally recorded edited phone call fans and millions of people jumped on the bandwagon to use the snake emoji.
I'm late to the party, I know, but I wanted to tell you what this song is really about. You were on the right track, but this goes deeper. Essentially, this song (and whole album called reputation) was written when a ton of people went from loving her to hating her, just like that. They said she called herself the victim too much, and that she was actually the one manipulating all those men she dated before, which she wasn't. She got fed up and wrote this album about the way people perceive artists, and how one untrue rumor can change the way everybody looks at you. So the whole album has this overdone evil vibe to throw everyone off, and this song in particular in my opinion is so so good because she's playing the role everyone said she was playing at the time, when she wasn't. Saying, "don't blame me, love made me crazy" since everyone was calling her crazy, and calling love her "drug," since everyone said she wrote too many breakup songs. It's a really overdramatic song playing the role of a manipulative snake, which is basically what everyone called her before she was inspired to write this album and create the 'reputation' era. If you want to learn more about this, watch her documentary "Miss Americana" on Netflix. She talks a lot about what went into writing this album. Anyways, that's enough of a rant from me, but I wanted to try and explain more of the song to you so you get the context of how brilliant this song actually is.
This song is so self explanatory 😂 you don’t need to know anything to get it. It’s probably the least cryptic song she’s ever written. It’s so silly but ohhhh it drives me mad when people totally miss the message or miss like a line that gives the overall context 😂 rap fans are the best to watch Taylor reactions coz they get it first go every time. Anyway I still keep coming back coz seeing people just enjoy Taylor at all is enjoyable 💗
It was great seeing you just stop breathing coming out of that bridge to the end! It really looked like you couldn't talk! Great reaction! Oh, & she was sick when this was filmed!
Ok this song is about her job if you listen to the 1s1st line my job is my baby I'll be using for the rest of my life! So in other word's she's giving so much of herself but your not willing to work with her and around her schedule ( joe).
People judge live performing as if some of the best female vocalists of the 70's-2000's didn't absolutely wreck their vocal chords from the sheer amount of touring they did. Mariah Carey talked about how touring ruined her voice and it has never ever been the same. Being a strong vocalist or a clear and pitch perfect vocalist was never really a thing until autotune was discovered. It's okay to have character in your voice and to not be perfect all the time!
This whole album is satire. It is a huge clap back at the press and anyone who believed that fake edited Kim video. She does not really mean what she is saying in many of the songs on this album. In this song, she is making fun of the media for calling her love crazy, and she is calling out lines from what the press says about her. "toying with older guys," "love crazy," "fake love and drama is a drug to her."
Ok, only a few minutes in, but I don’t think u grasped yet the meaning of this song. This to me, is her unapologetically saying that love is her drug of choice - and that if you don’t feel a little nuts, maybe it isn’t love. It’s a very passionate love, maybe more desire driven relationship. She’s giving fully into and embracing the heady power she feels with this person.
My drug is my baby, I’ll be using for the rest of my life …. Baby is a guy …. Using for the rest of her life. That’s the message. When he’s loving her, she gets so high. Has nothing to do with actual drugs.
I'm a swiftie and I agree that Taylor is a very good to great singer, but I readily admit that Taylor doesn't seem to be a "vocalist". I think a few great vocalists are Patsy Cline, Pat Benatar, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Ariana Grande, but many vocalists seem to ruin songs by showing off their voice meaninglessly, à la Mariah Carey's signature high pitched vocal climbs. I can't listen to Mariah anymore. Taylor's singing is more than good enough. I love many songs by many artists, but overall, I'd rather listen to Taylor Swift's catalog of songs than anyone else's.
Out off the woods 1989 world tour... you will never regret it... the vocals, the performance and the lyrics 🙌 👏

I heard her say in a Eras tour clip that Reputation is her “almost metal album”! She’s so so witty but she’s right!!
I saw this live at Reputation tour in Glendale AZ. It was incredible ❤
Hahaha Ralph yes.
Thanks for your reactions. I love watching the making of the song, prior to the video! ❤
15:17 is always perfection and i get so excited when it plays
I think you missed something here. From all we know about her John Mayer and Jake Gyllenhaal definitely weren't just playthings or toys for her, if anything they hurt her by treating HER like that.
The first verse is told ironically adressing the media who make her out to be like this. "Don't blame me, love made me crazy" is to the media saying "hey, I'm just tryna have a love live can you stop blaming me for that?"
I don’t know how is this not a single Taylor album track always x2 better
So excited!
Yay! Glad you're able to watch
I SO agree with you! I love hearing fresh takes with zero context, especially when people are really digging into the lyrics and meaning, etc. So fun.
love love love the music the rhythm love this song
I'm so hyped up for this one
This was HYPE
who she is with: The two people in the studio are Max Martin and Johan Shellback; they co-wrote /produced IKYWT, WANEGBT, and 22 on Red; co-executive produced the 1989 album, and the Reputation album (mostly the first half; Jack Antonoff did more of the later part). This is their LA studio.
Favorite song from my favorite album from Taylor. It's just soooooo good ❤️
watching u trying to process the performance is so funny🤣 this is my fav reaction on ur channel
Definitely need to listen to all of Reputation album , totally different Taylor 💜
I love her in all setting apparently :)
14:22 FINALLY! Lol. I think you finally grasped the meaning of the song. I was getting so annoyed I couldn’t scream to u what it meant.
Thank you Nick!! love your thoughts!! hope you're doing well in your vacation.
Thank you Tal, I really appreciated this one. The soul! It’s gone on my playlist. You’re the best!
Thank you for a great Taylor reaction once again :)
I’m literally watching you right now 💜
Love your Taylor reactions ❤
Thank you ES :)
@7:40 great reaction to Taylor coming on stage. And I’m like oh man …… he has to see the Eras. (Even thought the reputation version is TOO TIER)!!!
I love the eras tour performance of it !!
You should react Out off the woods from 1989 world tour as well as tour Enchanted/Wildest Dream also from 1989 world . Her vocals and performance on that is beyond amazing.
We need this on streaming 😭
i also love how he had to make that thumbnail before he’s even heard the song what if he hates it
I’ve actually already recorded haha. The premiere just means a live chat. Spoiler I loved it ❤
@@nickforell1 OHHH
I love all your reactions, I don’t know what is but your voice is unique and the way you speak… it always sounds like your battling a cold or you have allergies. But it’s so adorbs! Lol
Aw that’s so nice of you. Yeah haha my voice definitely has its struggles 😝
Yeah, I definitely started to go into cardiac arrest 😂
@@nickforell1 Welcome to a little known thing we Swifties call 'TayVoodoo'!
New drinking game: Every time he says “essentially”, take a shot.
(Just teasin’ with ya Nick, please don’t be offended by this)
this performance is my roman empire
This song is giving gospel !!
Wrote this about her, now, ex boyfriend. Joe Alwyn. She broke up with him, after 6yrs.. Like 2-3 months ago.
Have you done I Did Something Bad from this tour yet?? 😍
I have not!
@@nickforell1 oh you’re gonna love that one!!!
brilliant!
Seeing this song live at eras tour has ruined it for me… unreal and insane. One of the best live songs ever
You. Go. Gril ❤❤ sound. So. Good
It's about Joe; this is when they started dating in 2016/2017 when she released the #REPAlbum. 😉
Ok this song is about her job if you listen to the 1s1st line my job is my baby I'll be using for the rest of my life! So in other word's she's giving so much of herself but your not willing to work with her and around her schedule ( joe).
It's basically a love song to Joe 😭
I think she's referring "baby" to her music 🎶
I like this reaction vdeo
I think this is on my top 5 T's songs.....
I agree, it's pretty damn amazing
❤
looks like they used upscaled video; sometimes the audio doesn't stay quite synched.
You should def review the eras tour version of don’t blame me
I definitely will!
Miss Americana explains it all.
Please do Cruel Summer next!!
It looks like the soundtrack is off on this footage in the making of the song.
Yeah, I thought working on the song was super entertaining.
ok fine i'll susbcribe
ok fine I am honored
please check out some Lana Del Rey songs as well
My drug is my baby, I’ll be using for the rest of my life …. Baby is a guy …. Using for the rest of her life. That’s the message. When he’s loving her, she gets so high. Has nothing to do with actual drugs.
🌈💚🍀
