5:56 It's not just black people - a large amount of non-Māori feel it here too, and joined the hikoi and supported the movement. 46k people descended on parliament that day to deliver their message peacefully. I will continue to stand with them - Kia Kaha Aotearoa
Tēna koe Trudi. I note your surname as well. Many Māori like myself are of Scottish descent also. Thank you and all the other peoples who supported us from many cultures around the world. Arohanui
9:36 To clarify (from a kiwi), the confirmed transcription and translation from Te Pati Māori of what Hana says before their haka is ""Kāwana! Ka whakamanuwhiritia [au e koe] (Governor, you make me a visitor in my own land)." On a more personal note, this whole bill is a bunch of malarkey and a waste of tax payer dollars that we'll now be paying for for at least another six months.
We just don't think a referendum is an appropriate forum to discuss the treaty, we are a minority in our own country. Even if all maori voted it would be one sided. Why can't we use a forum with well informed people can help make sense of our founding documents. Having it be an open referendum is like to let the internet make decisions on matters the internet shouldn't. Emotion and opinion rule, not fact.100+ years the legislations added, have systematically broken down our culture to near extinction, generational wealth has been denied to us through laws that oppress our progress. They call us savage, because they view us as so. If the conventional processes cannot help us through a parliament that was built to break us, damn right we will challenge that process. As for the haka in parliament, it is part of our culture to challenge our opposition. And our culture has every right to be there. Its in our treaty to honor our cultures. We have had no choice but to honor yours. Yes, the Treaty of Waitangi affirms Māori rights and interests, including the right to honor their culture: Article 2 Confirms Māori rights to live as Māori, and to protect and develop their valued things, or ngä taonga katoa. Statement by Lieutenant Governor Hobson Before the signing of the treaty, Hobson stated that Māori custom would be protected, along with the faiths of England, the Wesleyans, and Rome. This statement is sometimes called Article Four of the Treaty.
@bobzindabottle I completely agree with you (I hope it didn't come across as the opposite) - I'll be saying something to a similar effect in my submission. It frustrates me that it's come to this at all, but if the principles do need defining it should absolutely be done between relevant parties and experts, not the general public.
@@thatsintreeguing cool as, was only trying to add a bit more insight into your reply thread. And yes, thank you Twano for shining a light on this topic.
@9:35 What she actually said in te reo māori (māori language) before launching into the haka was: “Oh Governors, oh Governors, you are only but visitors here”. I am māori so just wanted to correct as she asked. Before the english arrived, we called ourselves Tangata whenua (Tangata = People Whenua=Land = People of the Land) Thanks so much for the support of my people & for making this video! And the earlier lady was absolutely correct in saying that she was connecting with her ancestors, channelling their wairua (spirit). That is exactly what happens for us. We represent those who have gone before us.
If we lose Maori Culture we are all lost. I have said the same thing for Aboriginal Australian Culture which has been around for 60,000 years. Pake'ha life isn't that great, when we strip away its conceits.
@@DavidWalter-gz8ue Life in the bush without modern technology isn't all that great either. We need the best of both really if we want to move forward.

Thanks Twano, as an Aotearoa New Zealand pakeha I back the hikoi fully with all my heart. The Maori are the keepers of this land and deserve the rights that they were promised when the treaty was signed. Just one more note when I heard one woman in your video say they want equality. I'd recommend they look up the difference between equality and equity .. equality doesn't always make a difference but equity will. Kia kaha(stay strong) from NZ
Yes, as a Pakeha in Aotearoa NZ I agree with you. And I 100% support the hikoi and Te Tiriti 👍 I wish more Pakeha would try to understand the difference between equality and equity.

The lady at 5:39 hit the nail on the head. When performing the haka, you are conscious of what you're doing, but at the same time, you're not-if that makes any sense. Your body goes into autopilot, and you feel your ancestors speaking through you. It's almost like watching yourself in the third person while still being actively engaged.

We are so proud of Hana. I went to the Hikoi the other day. Tens of thousands of us were there to protest the bill. There was no hate, no violence, no aggression. I took my 80 year old mother. That's how safe it was. Nothing but love, unity and pride. One arrest out of over 50k who attended, with the support of thousands and thousands of other New Zealanders. We had people from across the globe to support us who were welcomed with pleasure. Everyone looked after the children and everyone looked after the older people so they could be there. I have nothing but pride. Thank you for sharing what's happening here.
NZ European here, we are unbelievably in support of the Māori people standing up for themselves and representing OUR national founding documents, the Treaty of Waitiangi.
7th generation NZ European.. this was not about standing up for the treaty.. the draft bill took NOTHING away from the treaty at all...our historical document was left untouched....it honoured all settlements and customary rights given to Maori under the treaty.. it only looked at the 1970's add ons by the extreme left Labour government and was suggesting that it should make all citizens of NZ irrespective of ethnicity or heritage EQUAL and it also gave the democratically elected government the right to govern... you obviously have not even read the bill or you would know this. Nothing in the treaty was touched at all and you misinform by suggesting it. It was only a draft bill and called for discussion and submissions from the people over the next 6 months before a second amended draft would then be presented for more discussion to take place. Any short falls Maori felt concerned them in the draft could be addressed in submissions.. when all was iron out it would go for a final reading and vote. The extreme separatist and very racist TPM do not engage in dialogue, discussions and submissions so instead they did their war dance making threatening killing gestures at MP's in Parliament and shutting Parliament down. Parliament is a place for discussions and ideas... and a code of conduct is set down. Maori have to be the first nation in the world who demonstrated AGAINST being made equal with all their other citizens.. instead they call themselves more than equal. TPM have a separatist agenda and deliberately misinformed the people.. many like you did not understand that the treaty was to remain untouched.
Kia ora my Pakeha brothers / sister for your support. Just so you if you didn't already to me and others the treaty of Waitangi is the English version which differs from the Maori translation much. Also according to international law Te Tiriti takes precedence over the treaty. When Te Tiriti is honoured it will be good for all kiwis. Blessings to you
One day it was question time in parliament and David Seymour got up and spoke something in Maori and both the speaker of the house and another Maori asked where the question was. At least he's trying to reconnect even if it is for 2 seconds. Shows how much he doesn't know about The Tiriti oh and who are the experts in linguistics, history did he consult before drafting his flawed bill?
@@valeriehughes1008 why would the Maori surrender themselves to be equal with those beneath them?? If the government are so concerned about others not having the same rights as the Maori then enter into a treaty with those people and lift them up to be equal instead of dragging the Maori down to be equal. And learn haka before making uninformed statements about it.
They are NOT protesting about the same rights being taken away as happens in the USA to black/ethnic people. Māori have always had the same legal status in NZ as anyone else (white, yellow, or green) They are protesting about a bill to change the way NZ is governed according to 1 interpretation of the Treaty of Waitangi. A very minor political party has written the bill and proposed the changes, and most people in NZ do not agree with it. It is very unlikely to get passed, but there is a process for any bill in parliament to be handled, and we have to go thru that process.
Potatoes, Pototoes, it resonates the same. People are fed up with wt supremacy and their goal to steal the world's wealth and colonize all nations! They are incapable of co-habitation, knowing nothing but evil. The whole planet is tired of their greed, racism, violence, and inhumanity. Unfortunately, their devices of war give them an unfair advantage. If they fought fairly, they would not get away with their wickedness. This is the price we pay for rescuing them when they were dying of diseases from which only they suffered and from welcoming them into the lands and teaching them how to survive. Instead of gratitude, they spent their time learning how to conquer and destroy their hospital hosts because they view kindness as weakness. If the world could do it all over again...
Looks to me like people are moved by Maori having love and respect for their people and ancestors. Any people can have love for their own people just the same. In this way Maori can set a good example for non Maori.
Research our country before you speak on it , this sets the worst example for the rest of New Zealand and future generations to come. It tells kids that they aren’t as important because they didn’t grow up in a certain culture.
Our ocean around New Zealand belongs to all who live in New Zealand. The rights Maori are fighting for is for all New Zealanders. Everything upon the land above and beneath belongs to the people. Not the Government, not the big businesses or companies that we the people have the say who, how much they can take, how long their companies can be here, could be a life time but we the people will tell you!
The draft bill did not touch the treaty.. the treaty was left untouched..all it did was looking at the 1970 add ons by the Labour government and suggested ALL citizens, irrespective of their ethnicity or heritage should be equal under the law and it also gave the democratically elected government, elected by the people, the right to govern... it was to ensure all citizens were equal with each other. This whole exercise has been proven to have been a TPM beat up... all settlements and customary rights given to Maori were never going to be touched. TPM is a very separatist and extreme radical party. Beware brother they do not speak for us all ... most people marching didn't know the treaty was to remain completely untouched and that it was only a draft bill to talk on, make submissions to, and the first part was done over a 6 month period to gather what people thought... the whole affair would have taken many months of consultation and discussion... I actually think with any worries Maori had addressed it could have bonded us closer together. . I was shocked at how TPM had misinformed the people.
@@kinasandwich7624 If you had read the draft of the bill you would know it did not touch the treaty, nor did it take anything away from Maori... all land settlements and customary rights were left untouched along with the treaty left untouched... I watch Parliament every day it sits and TPM are rarely even in attendance... just collecting their $200k salaries and all the expenses they can clock up (more expenses than any other party in the house).. they told the people that the treaty was being attacked and their culture cancelled... none of this was happening. Dozens of Maori questioned why they were marching were under the impression the treaty and their culture was being cancelled... none of them realised it was just a draft bill up for discussions and submissions would be taken and only the modern 1970's add ons were to be studied ...the first round of submissions from the people would take 6 months. It was not even going beyond that as the 2 other coalition parties would not support it beyond it's first reading.. so in fact it was a dead duck! TPM used the people as a big publicity drive to justify their presence.. they failed to explain what the bill was about or the fact that the 2 other coalition partners had told Parliament they would not support it beyond it's first reading.... I know a lot of Maori were furious when they realised just how they had been misinformed and used.
@valeriehughes1008 So you think Maori made themselves poor? Do you think Maori gave the lands they used for growing food to the European because they wanted to? You stole everything were you saw Maori were thriving and gave to your farmers? European fishing vessels and companies were given fishing quota to supply you European friends and countries and other places of the world! What was left could be used for Maori fisherman but had to add to export. What Maori people got out of it was a limited quota for Tangi, oh like everyone else the fisheries leagal daily limit. Yeah that's called colonialism.
@@kinasandwich7624I do not know why you attack me... If you were a true researcher you would research all the land transfer documents and look at all the sales of Maori land, as I have done, and then you would change your tune..... huge areas of land were sold by Maori themselves some of these sales dating as early as 1839 - I used the cut off date for my research 1960.. simply because I remember the ques of Maori cashing up on their lands waiting outside the Maori Land Courts in those times. No one wants Maori to be poor, I certainly don't they are my own.. but before you attack know the true facts much of Maori land was sold by Maori themselves They sold mostly the land they thought was scrub lands and poor lands, but now with today's technologies it produces well.. and in today's world is valuable..now the land has gone and money has gone and they scream it was stolen! My own family sold scrub Auckland land that was clay and did not yield in 1850's.. now in 2024 it is the Ellerslie Race Course...and there is no finer land... it was not stolen it was sold by my ancestor. If he knew what it is worth today I doubt that he would have sold his scrub waste land! My family does not try to claim back the land or shout it was stolen because we know the facts. Thank you for sharing this on your platform. So proud of Hana-Rawhiti Kareariki Maipi-Clarke. 22, our youngest MP and fearless about speaking truth to power. The person pushing the re-writing of our treaty is racist and widely disliked and has excluded Māori from any discussions. He also brought the reading of the bill forward in an attempt to prevent protests. Many, many of us are deeply opposed to his bill and upset by the way he has gone about it. Not just Tangata Whenua (people of the land AKA Māori) but, also Pākehā (whites descended from early colonisers) and Tangata Tiriti - literally people of the treaty - a term being embraced by many of us as more inclusive of other races who have made their home here and a show of our willingness to honour what many of us consider to be our founding document. Wish us luck as tomorrow a hikoi (march) that left from the bottom of te Waipounamu (the South lsland) and the top of te Ika-a-Māui (the North lsland) will meet on Parliament's steps to protest this unrighteous bill. Estimated numbers are 30,000 but, we hope for more. Re the haka; The change in expression is called Pukana and for women involves widening the eyes and jutting out the chin. Men do the same but, put out their tongues as well. As a white person who has never mastered it, l think of it as a kind of Māori super power. 😊
I think you need to think again, the original document Maori signed was allegiance to Queen Victoria, that's why the Treaty was signed by Maori Leaders and what has come afterwards is lies and more lies, by Governments that has sold NZ'ers down the river with their lies, reparations have been made to Maori and more by the taxpayer of this country, not Maori, taxpayers of every other ethnic group that makes up NZ, we do not need a 2 tier system, in other words Apartheid in NZ, have you seen it work anywhere else in the world, no because it doesn't work, the only racists here are Maori towards other ethnic races.
"Speaking truth to power" - disrupting a democratic vote in Parliament by staging a haka, physically approaching MPs across the aisle, pointing finger guns at them, and hurling personal insults.... that's your idea of speaking truth to power? David Seymour is racist? His bill literally calls for equality under law for all citizens and renounces the concept of categorizing people based on race or ancestry. Also, you know, he's Maori, so.... "Rewriting of Te Tiriti" - Not even close. It's a clarification of principles expressed in an 1840 treaty, to redress a very vague and questionable definition of those principles put forward by a judge in 1975, a judicial definition since twisted and willfully expanded upon by those with vested interests. "Widely disliked". Except for, you know, the 9% of the population who voted for him. What percentage of the vote did Te Pati Maori receive again? None of the Maori I work or chill with support Te Pati Maori, and generally ridicule them as clowns and extremists. "Brought forward the reading of the bill to prevent protests". Duuuuude, the actual date of first, second, and final readings changes all the time, as a matter of routine, as drafting, select committee, and revision processes play out ahead of or behind schedule. The bill's not even being read under urgency. The select committee process has not been truncated. A hikoi has time to wend its way slowly down the length of the country. So what the actual f**k are you even talking about? You're trying to turn a mundane and routine change in Parliament's schedule into a Scooby Doo conspiracy. If Te Pati Maori have reasoned, rational, and compelling arguments in opposition to the bill, perhaps they should articulate them clearly on the floor of the House, during their allotted time, because that's how Parliamentary democracy works. As Seymour keeps asking, perhaps you'd care to be the first to explain how this two-people, two-government society you're espousing would ACTUALLY FUNCTION IN REALITY?

native Polynesian inhabitants of the island. Today, many New Zealanders remember Mr. Solomon, who died in 1933, as the last survivor of a culture that drifted into extinction. Except it hadn’t. After Mr. Solomon’s death, a few hundred people with Moriori heritage remained. Over the decades that followed, they survived cultural marginalization in a country where children were taught in school that Moriori were inferior to the dominant Indigenous group, the Maori. And now they are fighting to establish themselves in the national consciousness as a thriving native people.

The Moriori people were victims of cannibalism as part of the Moriori genocide, a period of mass murder, enslavement, and cannibalism that took place from 1835 to 1863. The Moriori are the indigenous people of New Zealand's Chatham Islands, and the genocide was carried out by the mainland Māori iwi Ngāti Mutunga and Ngāti Tama. The genocide caused the Moriori population to drop from 1,700 in 1835 to 100 in 1870. The last full-blood Moriori, Tommy Solomon, died in 1933. Today, there are fewer than a thousand people of mixed descent who identify as Moriori. Before the genocide, a prominent Moriori chief named Nunuku-whenua established "Nunuku's Law", which prohibited war, cannibalism, and murder.

It's ironic how you guys have respect and love for us .........n yet our government hates us to the point where they want to erase our culture ........our language.........and to take our land .................what is to be Māori...... Thank u for your Love!
So interesting for a kiwi to see the perspective of the rest of the world. Yes this bill does nothing to the Pakeha, but damages historical protections written in the treaty for Maori. It's just a lot division and disingenuous debate club nonsense that should not be allowed into a house of government.
I think why black people from the US, West Indies, UK have a close connection to Maori culture because you guys have lost your connection of identity through being uprooted from your native lands. ❤
I am a Kiwi and no one is trying to take away any of their rights. And it was not in a courtroom it was in our parliament. That Bill was not going to interfere in anyway with any freedoms any of us Maori or Pakeha it was just a reiteration in the language of today of the principles The Treaty Granted ALL of us. It is being protested because their are those within Maori who have found a great way of dodging around some of our laws because of special rights they have been given re fishing etc., Those in power are just trying to tidy up the wording and understanding of our Treaty. The Waitangi Tribunal was set up to addresses and make such reparations as the country could do without breaking it. I am quite cross with this Hi koi. It is being used by those who have had a great run and lived very well of the reparation’s and other things our governments have made for them because taking a Stone Age people into the 20 th century is not easy but most Maori have not only succeeded but compete on the world stage.. It must also be considered that they had slaves who generationally lived being told where to go and what to do these people over time lost any connection to tribal pride they lost their Mana. These are people with generationally instilled lack of direction. We as a nation have with good intention done our best to help. But you can’t undo history and we can only do so much.
Kiwi too - Ngāti Kahungunu /Ngāti Porou. The bill as I have read it has more holes in it than a pair of ripped fishnet stockings. It seems like David Seymour went to the secondhand book store, found a book "Treaties for Dummies" and thought he was onto a good thing. Please tell me where the Maori Privilege shop is? I've been looking but can't find one. As one of the commenters in the video said, the fight for equity, for equal outcomes and equal shares feels like oppression to those who have had the privilege and the power. And this is what this Treaty Principles Bill is really about. It's not about equal rights for all, it's about entrenching the status quo - keeping power in the hands of those who have misused it for so long. This protest is waking up indigenous, First Nations and minority groups all around the world. Ake, Ake, Ake! Toitū te Tiriti!
The bill put forward by the Act party was always a stupid idea and was never going to go through anyway (due to a resounding lack of support from all other parties). Just a waste of time and money and creating divisiveness and bad feelings.
The ancestors of the Maori people originated in South-East Asian and Micronesian regions. Maori's migrated to Polynesia, where they eventually settled in New Zealand 🇳🇿. The first Maori settlers likely arrived in New Zealand 🇳🇿 , Between 1200 and 1300 AD, - traveling by Canoe. And navigating using the Stars, winds and ocean currants. The first arrivals came from East Polynesia 🇵🇫, specifically Southern Cook Islands and Society Islands. The Maori's here are considered 'The People Of The Land', Creating a new culture and language here. 👍🏻😊
Thanks, guys, for the support of the Maori. We feel for you that have been oppressed because of being a minority as we have been. In the past they wouldn't let you speak Maori in the schools this was about the 1950's and 1960's. Also, in the 1950's and 1960's Maori were not allowed in the hotels or pubs. One of the principles of the treaty that was signed by the chiefs said the British crown would govern us including NZ citizens and that we if we wanted to sell our land to them then this could be done. Instead, they took land from the Maori. Also, there was an agreement that Maori were to run the lands, forestry and the fisheries. So, land was taken, and the forestry was sold to the Chinese by the government, So, we are pissed. On the 19th of this month which will be the 18th in America we are having a Hikoi (March) by our people onto the parliament grounds. A lot of our other cultures who are NZ citizens disagree also and are marching with us as well.
Since before the Hīkoi went onto move for Wellington. I ONLY ever saw negativity around the haka being done in parliament and Māori in general. Now I'm starting to see all these positive videos and comments and it's reassuring to know that there are people willing to learn about the subject and connect; as opposed to blindly take the side of ignorance
Arohanui
We appreciate your support greatly ty!
Nga mihi Trudi .. we appreciate your tautoko (support) as well as the tautoko of other kiwi alike x
And make room for the other non Maori iwi around the globe to join in Wairua, MAURIORA!!!
@@thatsintreeguing That's brilliant. Thanks.
Kia ora, thank you all for understanding our plight, much respect from Aoteroa ❤️
Yes, the Treaty of Waitangi affirms Māori rights and interests, including the right to honor their culture:
Article 2
Confirms Māori rights to live as Māori, and to protect and develop their valued things, or ngä taonga katoa.
Statement by Lieutenant Governor Hobson
Before the signing of the treaty, Hobson stated that Māori custom would be protected, along with the faiths of England, the Wesleyans, and Rome.

Before the english arrived, we called ourselves Tangata whenua (Tangata = People Whenua=Land = People of the Land) Thanks so much for the support of my people & for making this video!
Just making it known that one arrest wasn't from the hikoi protest but from a counter protest. The tapu of Te Tiriti is too strong to be messed with.

Is that you David the Atlas corporate muppet Seymour?
Māori have always had the same legal status in NZ as anyone else (white, yellow, or green)
They are protesting about a bill to change the way NZ is governed according to 1 interpretation of the Treaty of Waitangi.

@valeriehughes1008 How were they being separatist and what did they say that was misinformation?

@@TOMORROWSFRIDAY Nice try.

Maori haka is soo powerful thats why, and its connected to spirit.

native Polynesian inhabitants of the island.
Children were taught in school that Moriori were inferior to the dominant Indigenous group, the Maori??? LMFAO
Oh so Maori put that in the history books of NZ and sent copies to all the schools? LOL I see you now. The author of that fabricated nonsense was Percy Smith assisted by Elsdon Best. I mean seriously? They BOTH claimed the Moriori were part of Percy Smiths mythical Maruiwi ABORIGINALS. Go read the deed of settlement for Moriori. This racist nonsense was used to justify Pakeha theif and violence against Maori. This shit was even called out by proffessional ethnologist HD Skinner in 1924. Claimming MAORI killed Moriori isnt true either uneducated hua manu. Maori as a collective group didnt exist until 1840. Over 100 Iwi Hapu groups held domain independently over their lands. 2 Iwi of around 900 people migrated to Rekohu from Port Nicholson. Ngati Tama & Mutunga.
I see what youre trying to do here .....paru as fuck...

As a New Zealander currently living in Australia (yes, another one),
I find it even more ridiculous that David Seymour who wants to change the Treaty of Waitangi is of Maori heritage.
It's unnecessary and only removes rights and protections for the Maori. Its brilliant to see the impact of the Haka being done in Parliament having an international impact and raising awareness of the detrimental changes to a treaty signed in 1840 would have.
Kia Kaha.
As another New Zealander currently living in Australia,
what a load of BS. Maori legit believe they're owed something when they're not owed shit.
@dilaan8645 We all have different opportunities. I had private school, tertiary educated parents, a middle class home, etc. That opens doors for success in life, many people don't have access to that. So why don't we talk about what truly being equal means? Also, remember, it was their land.

Excellent compilation. Everyone, including Pakeha (white people) should protect the Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi). Indigenous rights are human rights. I lived in Chi-town for 35 years and I've been in Aotearoa for 4+. Love it. If you're coming from a major city you have to detox from all the noise in your day to day. It's quiet here. The roads? Take a professional driving course. Quiet people? Yes, please. Maori culture? Yes, please. Meat pies? Yes, please. You get the idea. "Problems" exist everywhere. So do solutions. I miss my friends and family but I love it here. No regrets.
Don't forget to mention the British involvement, yaknow the instigators.

Willie Jackson acknowledge in parliament house of the brutal injustice of the peaceful Moriori people at the hands of his ancestors, Nanaia spoke as well.
Willie Jackson said :
I've always said to a number of Moriori who I grew up with-some of the Solomon whānau in Māngere-that I couldn't be held responsible for the acts of some of our tīpuna and some of our ancestors.
"Hundreds of years ago, the Moriori of the Chatham Islands took a solemn vow of peace known as Nunuku's law. Their decision to uphold this sacred law in the face of aggression in 1835 had tragic consequences. The people were slaughtered, enslaved, and dispossessed of their lands. Nevertheless, Moriori people survived."
You conveniently forgot to mention the part about the British taking two tribes to the Chathams to attack the Moriori and did nothing to stop the attack. Oh the British just went there to do some sight seeing and just happened to have two out of the many Maori tribes onboard just out of coincidence.
Cool story bro

I know for sure that last woman’s name with the negative checklist is Karen 🤦🏽♂️
Most of the things were positives. Cold houses? Does she live in Mt cook lol

The first Maori settlers likely arrived in New Zealand 🇳🇿 ,
Between 1200 and 1300 AD,
- traveling by Canoe.
And navigating using the Stars, winds and ocean currants.
The first arrivals came from East Polynesia 🇵🇫,
specifically Southern Cook Islands and Society Islands.
The Maori's here are considered 'The People Of The Land',
Creating a new culture and language here. 👍🏻😊
Team Māori!!!!!!!!!
