Hi Jen. Thanks for another great video. Just wanted to recommend Segu by the French-Guadeloupean writer Maryse Condé. It’s the best historical fiction I’ve read about West Africa from the 18th century. It also mimics a lot of real life events and retains a lot of pertinence to what’s going on today. xx
I just can't fathom WHY an author or publisher would think it in any way ok to let an obsession with a disfigurement become a theme in the books they write/publish! That seems so off. Seriously condone your dnf! Thank you also for all the recommendations about where to donate/who to watch/what to read. I really appreciate it.
i loved your comments on "the memory game" and your enjoyment despite the silliness..i'm with you on "between the world and me" and "remarkable creatures" is one of my all time favorite books.
I've recently read New Boy by Tracy Chevalier, this is a part of Hogarth Shakespeare project and is a retelling of Othello and I really really liked it. The story takes place in the US in the 70-s,new boy, son of an African diplomat joins the the all-white school.
The Perserverance changed the way I thought about poetry and I am forever grateful it exists - the same as Don't Call Us Dead. Both are collections I adore. I recall not being surprised by The Crossing Places when I first read it. I was a teenager, so will admit to not being as knowledgeable at the time about fatphobia which is a shame and I would probably read it with a different lens now. Did any of the books fill the Frieda Klein shaped hole in your reading life?
The Skin We're In, by Desmond Cole, is on my TBR. This is a Canadian perspective on racism (we aren't so different than the US in this regard, though we like to tell ourselves we are).
Not sure if you are interested in books like this and they are nothing like the Freida Klein novels but the ‘Chronicles of St, Mary’s’ by Jodi Taylor are great escapist novels where you can get really involved with the characters.. I love them and I am usually a Crime, Mystery and High Fantasy reader. Thank you for all the links below your video, I have been reading what I can but really useful t have your recommendations.
Thanks for the recommendations and the links 🙂 I spent ages doing loads of links in my last video and they all appear as just an @ sign with nothing else - I can't figure out why they're not displaying 😏 Love Tracey Chevalier too. My favourite of hers so far is The Last Runaway. Recommendations - I love Ghost Reader's channel - he reads so many great non fiction books as well as fiction and his discussions are brilliant. Also Gisele Mills - Caribbean author & booktuber, great selection of books & discussions of them.

@Book Riot is a channel I like that has POC on it regularly too. It is great that you put some links in so I can find more booktubers of colour, so thanks!
I am missing two of my favorite creators: Jesse from Bowties and Books and Noria from Noria reads. Both are very beautiful souls here on booktube and deserve all the love they get and than some! Jesse is the creator of the Black-A-Thon and Noria created the Fuck-A-Thon. Both read-a-thons are worth one's time - to broaden one's horizon while having fun! Great video - as always.
Hi! Just to say that your view on murder-narrator are totally understand... I just can't finish Mr Mercedes by Stephen King because the narrator is planning to and he actually do it (with us in his brain) killing a lot of people by run over them with his big mercedes.... Thank you for the care that you put in your video, your recommendations are always unique.
@@jenvcampbell yes that part is really understood by me: like with the weight... a female protagonist is always neglectfull of her child, pets and has a anger problem if she is obese.... and that's the thing that disgust me. Being mean don't go with the look of the person. lol Have a good day!!!
my reading's been really bad because i can't concentrate, once more i fail at the history of the congo and once more i restart Three Kingdoms. (also a long history book, if fictional) Please stop reading thrillers, i don't like them, i need poetry reviews. Also, please tell the publishers to stop pushing back release dates. Unless they're going to wait three years for a vaccine and queue up every damn author of the past four years at readings, they may as well get on with it and release them now. Grrrr. Would be quite interested in your views on this subject, as i'm sure they're interesting. I'm planning to reread Book of New Strange things as it might reflect the current situation too. Only good reading was deborah levy swimming home. Probably works best if you immediately reread it, but can't be arsed. I'm not sending money to america, they're the richest country in the world, they can fund their own damn selves. Yemen need it more like, but better still we should all write to our MPs suggesting we pause propping up our arms industry helping Saudi carpet-bomb it - just while they've got Covid19. I'm going to give some to Wales' air ambulance, as they're short of money at the best of times and their income's vanished entirely with covid. Even the hospices here are bankrupt. There's no hospice you can go and die in here, just volunteers who'll come round to your house for up to an hour to let your carer do the shopping! That's what counts as a 'hospice' in rural wales. Given it takes about an hour to drive the round trip to the supermarket, i can't see what use it is. As they're not 'end of life' buildings, they're not eligible for government support to charities. I do wish the welsh had a little of the Scots' backbone and demanded more.
you missed out two of the best black booktubers, The Storyscape and Onyx Pages. I can't remember all the ones i follow, but youtube keeps hiding them from me and showing me silly white teenagers who read harry potter and fantasy (can't stand either). (no i don't know what bit me) I wrote to them about it but they're still hiding them from me. Plus youtube are racist as they use colour, like porn, in their algorithm, and not in a good way (if you look at the suggestions when you radically change your watching).

The Elle Griffiths books are fantastic. I love the complicated relationships.
My grandfather is buried in Highgate Cemetery. Whenever I went there as a child, it terrified me and I couldn’t wait to leave!! Hx
It’s a very gothic place! x

I can't believe that you have read so many books Jen!
i do mean to read that. Some day
Oh my goodness, I loved The Virgin Blue. Read it soon after it came out. One of the very first split time books that I cam across.

That's the second in a series; you'll need to read Blue Monday, first! x
Thanks Jen! This was wonderful as always! X

I don’t mind hearing from the murderer as a narrator - I’m just sick of the disfigurement = evil trope. It’s boring and offensive.
