Follow me to Ground was one of those books that really surprised me this year. I'm a medical intern (doctor in less than a year) with a disability/chronic illness, so this checked a lot of my boxes. I ended up adoring it. It can be a fine line to balance as a doctor when you want to help people with a disability, without feeling the need to "fix" them or making them feel like that's what you want to do. Communication is so vital, and small mistakes or omissions can cause so much frustration. Having been on both sides, I think this book captured that well. I loved hearing your thoughts, and I'm glad you liked it too!
temperature dysregulation is evillllll oh my I really feel you there - I recently read and loved Pew too and currently half way through Ali Smith's Summer and LOVING it - can't wait to hear your thoughts! xxx
temperature dysregulation twins! (Luckily I live in the north, where it's only a little warm. I feel you! Don’t know how you’re even filming in that heat!)x
24 in a month! Incredible. You've made me very keen for Pew, Pet and All the Little Places. I have The Thing Around Your Neck lurking in the TBR somewhere.
I watched that vlog on reading your shorter books, and I decided to read my shorter books too. Your vlogs as relaxing to watch and now I want to bake bread too.
I’ve read Salt on Your tongue thanks to your Patreon page. I’m not a big fan of water and the sea, but I really enjoyed reading the book. It’s something I wouldn’t have read had I not seen it on Patreon. A few words on air conditioning: my husband bought an air conditioner and it’s sooo good!
Great video as always, Jen. Speaking of fairy tales and analysing them, can I just recommend Vladimir Propp’s Morphology of the Folktale? I thought it quite an interesting read.
You and I don't read the same genres, but I subscribe and watch every video because I love to hear you talk about books, even if I'll never read them! Does that make any sense? Haha
Cool books, writing down some down for my Amazon wish list, loves your creepy books list 📚 and got a few like perfume, revenge, what to do when someone dies and the dreamers. I Luv that head wrap😀❤️
I concur with you on On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous. I really wanted to like it as I adore his poetry, but I thought the prose was all over the place...some of the writing was lush, other parts felt very overdone. Look forward to reading more Vuong, though. On instagram he made out like he's writing another novel. I hope he comes out with another collection soon and that he takes his time with the next novel. Nice to hear you had a good reading month. My reading is going well so far this month - onto Autumn by Ali Smith so far and liking it a lot - which I'm glad of, as I found The Accidental very dull eek.
I just picked up Pew from my local indie yesterday based on your previous video. Looking forward to reading it. I loved Bluebird, Bluebird and I’ve got the next book in the series here. I’m trying to hold off for a bit because, as you said, it’s only just come out and it’ll be awhile before we get the next one. I think she’s an excellent writer. I’ve added Follow Me To Ground to my list. It sounds delicious!
I have a question unrelated to the video if you don’t mind. Do you think is it ok if a writer uses names of actual ancient locations for a fictional world, even though the actual real-world location has nothing to do with the fictional one? For example, The Great Pyramids name is used, but they are not real world pyramids, and the entire setting of the story is obvious fiction/fantasy. If yes? Can you give me examples of literary works using this technique? I’ve been doing so research on the topic and I couldn’t find any helpful information. I’ll be grateful if anyone could help here?
I have picked up Follow Me To Ground in shops a few times and put it back down, unsure about it so I am so excited to hear your thoughts! Will definitely be on my next book haul 😍x
It’s only 16 degrees here. Move to N.Ireland. Though it might get too cold for you. Best book read so far this month House On Endless Waters by Emuna Elon. Translated from Hebrew. Britta recommended it. Currently reading Mussolini’s Island by Susan Day How Much of these Hills is Gold I reread Actress by Ann Enright as I liked it so much. 🦋📖📚☘️👋
I didn't know that Strangers Press had a Korean collection too! Now I want to buy them all, haha. I'll be excited to hear your thoughts on them for WIT Month.
omg that's a lot. wonder how y'all do it?? it took me pretty much staying up all night for three days to finish only one book smh [ laughing crying emoji]
Being American, I had to translate to Fahrenheit before I could be horrified for you. I think anything over 80°F (about 27°C) is a waste of a good afternoon.
Ugh, I read 2 books that month. I am not a fast reader. Jealous. If you haven’t already done a video on how to increase volume it would be appreciated.
I had to read some of these books for work. Got to remember that books are my job - writing them, reviewing them, writing articles etc. Also, something I perhaps should have mentioned in the video, reading a lot is not always a great sign. My mental health was not good in July; I didn’t sleep much and reading was a coping mechanism. I did get to discover some fabulous books, but I would rather have felt happier. So don’t worry about not reading lots. xx
24 books👀😰how?? Even if some of them were short that is insanely impressive! Especially with all the baking that is going on as well. (Never mind that you also have a job). Stay safe & cool 💚💚 (Hope Mr M is standing by with some ice)❄❄❄🍦🍦🍦
Perhaps something I should have mentioned but to echo Jean who has spoken about this before: it’s not always a good thing when you read so much; it can mean that your mental health is pretty low and reading is your coping mechanism. That was definitely the case last month, but at least I discovered some lovely books that will stay with me for a long time xx
@@jenvcampbell ok, I get the mental health aspect and that reading can be a distraction - good and bad. If it works as a coping mechanism that's ok as well (and I know you have others as you' ve spoken about that). But in the interest for your health and wellbeing I will definitely settle for much shorter wrap ups. (As a reflection that you're doing ok) Let's hope that this month will be good all round.
Just found your channel and I am really excited about getting to no what you love to read love 💖 John Saxon in Australia xxx please stay safe and when I can subscribe to you I will as I am waiting for you tube to fix my problem
I have about 10 books that I ordered on line in July. They are all books I really want to read, but for some reason I just can't seem to read anything. It seems that my depression is getting worse and nothing is making me happy.
I feel you ♥️ I think it goes both ways. In March my mental health was bad and I couldn’t focus on reading at all. Last month, my mental health was also really bad but for some reason reading felt like a coping strategy. Sometimes it works, sometimes it really doesn’t. Sending love xx
Oh wow! Maybe I should try this challenge! I haven’t had a good reading month in a while. Btw I love your lipstick, looks absolutely gorgeous, what shade are you wearing Jen? Follow me to The Ground sounds so good!
Can you make a video how we can read in a foreign language (sorry Iam a new subscriber if you made this before)btw I liked weird things customer says in bookstores part 1 and 2 it really was funny
I think the best thing is to start with a book which you are already familiar with. At first, I used a dictionary and looked up every word I didn’t know. But that’s very time consuming so I stopped doing that and just read. English was always my favourite language (and subject at school) so that helps, too, I think. I also watch movies and tv shows in English (if the original language is English). If you like podcasts I recommend “Luke’s English Podcast”. He is an English teacher and I think he did an episode about reading books in another language (English in this case).

Pew sounds intriguing! It doesn't sound like anything I've ever read before. Definitely adding to my TBR :)

I really have to read Pew, I get more and more intrigued each time you mention it!
You look stunning, as always.
And you talk stunning as always. ☺️
Dear Jen, you are a Super-Jen!

I absolutely adored Follow Me To Ground. I got it as an arc early in the year and have been so excited to hear others thoughts.
Blue Bird Blue Bird sounds great - adding that one to my list :). Have you ever tried a Tana French? I feel like you might like her work
I have but didn’t love it, sadly x
I want to read Braised Pork so much!
I read Follow Me To Ground in March and I’ve been wondering what you’d think since- enjoyed hearing your thoughts!
24? GOD DAMN! Great job.
100% agree with your take “On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous”

So your not going to visit Death Valley this year. As a fellow i don't have AC either its bad here in Florida. Stay Safe. Lots of water

I didn't understand the plot "twist" from Follow Me to Ground. Can you explain it? Did the guy have a romantic relationship with his sister?
Yes.
Next month, I want to pick up every book by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie that I haven't read yet.
excellent plan!
