This movie is a great homage to Hong Kong Kung Fu cinema of the 70s and 80s. The three skilled fighers from the villiage, including the landlord/landlady couple, are kung fu movie veterans from that era. Stephen Chow himself, the director and main character, is a huge fan of martial arts and those movies. It's an awesome and unique combination of traditional martial arts, modern CGI and comedy. As someone who once watched this film at least 2-3 times a day every day during college in 2005, I have to say this is still one of my favorite comedies. The knife throwing assassination attempt scene never ceases to make me laugh.

Tathagata Palm: The palm used by the male protagonist, a fictitious kungfu originating from martial arts novels, and there is no real existence. The three tenants in the movie are all played by real kung fu masters. The actor of the landman is Jackie Chan’s senior brother, who acted as stand-in for Bruce Lee in old times. Also the philosophy of it, that is portrayed in Shaolin Kung Fu as well, is that the Kung Fu is inside of all of us and just needs to be unlocked! I never saw anyone watch a kung fu movie and think of superpowers. thats what happens when all you know is superhero movies. hong kong cinema fights are a different class
Stephen Chow itself is legendary actor.. and his films are in every genre.. sci-fi, kungfu, horror, suspense, fiction, action, and lots more.. watch more his old films..
In Shang Chi, you can see the poster of Kungfu Hustle in his apartement Because Marvel want to make an homage to the real rings master 9:42 This movie is legendary classic
I don't remember who wrote it...But he perfectly expressed the essence of the film in one sentence: "This story is about a good guy who can't become bad and therefore he goes to the bright side balancing Chi in his soul" By the way, from personal experience, this film was given to me for my birthday as a child)))
Movie is a love letter to action flick, each "escalation" of the Kung Fu power is an homage to the evolution of kungfu action flick. From the gangland musical style from the 50s to the solid Beijing Opera fight style, to actual kungfu from the 3 master hiding in Pigsty alley, all the way to the Dragonball matrix fight at the end. Stephen Chow (who played the main character) write, direct and produce this and many of his film has this "ultra grunge " aesthetic as a knock on how movies make the heroes or any character to be flawlessly supermodel beautiful, he wanted to show there is beauty, power and virtue in the more of everyday people. The translation of Landlord and Landlady's name is kind of off base with Helen and Troy. Stephen name them after the most beautiful couple of a famous wuxia (martial chivalry) novel that had been made into film/tv multiple times. A western analogy is like naming them Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen. It is as if saying that when they got older, they retire there and looks old and normal.
in the actual chinese context of the movie. the 2 couples are Yang Guo and Dragon Girl. they're the famous martial arts tragic couples. there's even tv dramas and anime about them.
- No kidding, this is for me one of the best tragi comedy films in history - The choreographer of this film was the same one who staged the scenes in the Matrix) - Stephen Chow himself shot this film and took the main role in it himself (and he is preparing a sequel) - Yuen Wa (Vermieter) also starred in Shang Chi and Danny Chen (whom you called similar to Bruce Lee) really created his image, but already in Shaolin soccer (also shot Stephen Chow, I highly advise if you haven't seen) and played Bruce Lee personally, but already in Ip Man 4 - Yuan Qiu (Hostess/Elena Troyanskaya) initially did not pretend to any role in the casting and came on a tip from a friend and she did not pass, but the filming team saw her face with a cigarette in her mouth and immediately chose her XDD - Bill Murray himself praised this picture
"This guy... looks exactly like Bruce Lee, a little bit doesn't he?" "No he doesn't..." That's Danny Chan, who is Bruce Lee in the Ip Man movies, the bio-series "The Legend of Bruce Lee" and the Bruce-parody character in "Shaolin Soccer" Fun facts; The Landlord is Yuen Wah who was one of Bruce Lee's stunt doubles, and can be seen currently in "Shang Chi" as the old archery master. The Landlady was one of the teenage kung fu girls who save Roger Moore's a$$ from a gang of thugs in "Moonraker"
Tell u a thing. The husband of the lad lady. He was a stunt man from Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon in 1972. All the jumping shot was done by him. Marvel movie Shang-chi. He was the playing the leader of the Chinese group.
Of course bro. I actually live in Zhuhai Guangdong China now which is right across from Macau and Hong Kong. So the area I live in, they speak mostly Cantonese dialect like the actors in this film. It's a crazy language with so much fluctuation. Great for absurb movies like this one haha.
KFH is the high water mark of HK action/comedy - Bill Murray (iirc) reckons it the best comedy of all time. Thanks for taking the time to appreciate it, this was a great reaction!
Stephen Chow, who plays the main character, the Buddhist palm guy, is the director and creator of this film. He’s a Hong Kong movie genius, and his brand of action comedy is a genre onto itself. Kung Fu Hustle is probably the most mainstream of his films, and broke into the international stage, but he has a whole host of amazing movies spanning decades. Some of the best titles are Shaolin Soccer, god of cookery and the Fight back to school trilogy. What’s amazing about Chow’s comedy is that there are a lot of culturally specific jokes, like how he incorporates spoofs of Hong Kong gang culture and violence, but it transcends the Hong Kong culture and can be universally appreciated. He’s by far more favorite Hong Kong movie maker, and he’s an awesome actor to boot.
There is a western movie that has a similar hilarious humor and is also an homage to the old eastern kung fu movies. So after Kung Fu Hustle you should check out Kung Pow - Enter the Fist.
Stephen Chow confirmed Kung-Fu Hustle 2 is coming but not sure how long it will take yet. I like the Netflix series on the town too. But it's never gonna happen because Stephen Chow likes to have "full control" over his movies and is free from intervenes. That's why he rejected Hollywood's invitations multiple times.
30:21, you're totally correct. It's a thing with Stephen Chow's movies. (You should check out his others movies too). You will never get bored, even after watching them hundred times. That's why Stephen Chow is beyond legend and is being idolized and worshiped by pretty much 1+ billion Chinese people in China and Oversea Chinese all around the world.
If you go back to the scene just after the Axe Gang member ends up in a trash barrel, it looks like it was ( Rabbit Tooth) Jane that did it. Meaning she was super fast, possibly another master living in the slum village. Check out The Road To Wellville. 1994
It's awesome that you guys reviewed this movie. It is one of my TOP TOP TOP TOP favorites. I feel like nobody even knows it exists... but it combines action, comedy, drama, and everything into the same movie. The movie literally entertains out of the gate. I would love to see a Netflix series with this.
As I'm sure others are recommending as well, check out the film Stephen Chow made before Kung Fu Hustle, a film called Shaolin Soccer. It combines kung fu with soccer/football - brilliant! (and hilarious!) And notice at the beginning of Kung Fu Hustle the first time we meet Stephen Chow's character he destroys a soccer ball and says, "No more soccer!" - that was a nod to "Shaolin Soccer" which had been a big hit in Hong Kong.
I watched this movie with my father when I was a kid about 120 times but recently I decided to watch it again at the age of 18 with my friend and realized that I actually just watch life-action anime
Stephen Chow is a huge fan of Bruce Lee and Chinese Martial Arts novels. Almost in all of his film you will find references to these. The ending segment fight scenes, most of those very 'stylized' martial arts moves including the toad tranformation are all based off fighting styles in Yin Yong's Martial Arts novel. (Yin Yong is probably one of the most famous and legendary author known for his martial arts novels). The villain is also one of the 5 'Dragons' in Hong Kong. Two of the more infamous dragons are Jacky Chan and Bruce Lee.
This is a MASTERPIECE, every scene well thought out, every line, dialogue, expression, subtle details, story, character development, spacing, paying homage and references to other movies and western entertainment, music, sound effects, sound design, ALL put in with creativity. That's Stephen Chow.
Kung Fu Hustle is backed up with all the essence of the Hong Kong’s Kung Fu literatures. The Frog Kung play by the Beast at the end is actually from Jin Yung’a literature ‘Legend of the Condor Heores’
Chi Ling Chiu, who played the tailor, was 60 when they made this. He's in his late 70s now and as of a couple of years ago was still preforming in actions movies.
She really beat him with real sandal and it was real. Behind the scene Stephen chow himself said it was hurt that was why he running. That hit was real.
I was eating pretzels while i was watching this and when the guy got bit by the snakes and his lips swelled up i laughed so hard i spit the pretzels onto the floor, this one was good.
Bro, I saw this when it came out and I forgot how great it is! Glad y'all liked it so much. Fun to see y'all experience it for the first time. So good!! Stephen Chow was supposed to be in a legit Bruce Lee biopic but they wanted to make too many changes so he bailed on the project. Too bad. Anyway, keep em coming bruv!
The gang leader who looks like Bruce Lee did go on to play Bruce Lee in many films, including the most recent, Ip Man 4. XD He was discovered by Stephen Chow when he was just part of the crew in Shaolin Soccer. The "let him do a Bruce Lee impression" thing turned into 20 years of career as Bruce Lee on the big screen XD The sick choreo is directed by Sammo Hung (Jackie Chan's brother in trainining) in the first half and the stunt director of the matrix in the second half. The "fairy" kung fu master who hits super hard is a grand master in real life. He has taught both Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. But on screen, he usually just plays a side character/comedic relief for fun. In this case, he wanted to try something "a little different" Lol The landlord and landlady are both Jackie Chan's brother/sister in training as well. Landlord was Bruce Lee's stunt double, then mostly just played villains/side characters until this movie. The Landlady was a bond girl. She did a bunch of stunt work before kinda fading away from the big screen. Until this movie, where Stephen Chow basically begged her to be the landlady XD So yea, this movie has a really strong cast. They may not be very well known, but they are the real deal. XD Kinda like the movie's premise: Kung Fu master hiding in everyday life.
This is the typical Stephen Zhou movie style, he is named THE KING OF COMEDY in China. Really recommend you to watch his 3 fantastic movies which are especially popular : 唐伯虎点秋香 Flirting Scholar, 武状元苏乞儿 King of Beggers, 大话西游之月光宝盒 Moonlight.
Many of the hk movies do have stories and meaning behind, and that usually associated with the history and culture. Good that the kung fu catches your eye, but there are also some key messages behind. Enjoy our movies!
This is one of the movie reaction you can watch a hundred times and never get bored. Good job both of you. Not sure someone already commented about this or you already realized. The landlord and landlady kungfu compliment each other too. Landlord “Taichi” style is soft and passive type of kungfu, while the landlady lion roar is pure strength and hard type. Together they are good balance and like Yin and Yang.
I love it how westerners said they have "powers" like superhero movies. Not in Chinese concept of Kung Fu ... Martial Arts skill to the highest level. Concept we learned from Kung Fu movies and Hong Kong comics books.
I can only think of one movie similar to this, and that is Shaolin Soccer. There is another movie you can try, its called Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. I remember hating that movie when it first saw it. Ten something happened and i slowed started to love it.
Yes!!! The guy who looks like bruce lee is deliberate. He played a bruce lee look alike character in Shaolin Soccer as well. Stephen Chow loves him some bruce lee.
22:54. she said, "don't u remember me a long ago you helped me from the bullies when we were kids. I want to say thank you and to give you this as a token of appreciation". They're are sooooo many Sign Languages in different continents/countries. These are Chinese Sign Languages (CSL)
The Landlady (Yuan Qiu), Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan , they are under the same master. The landlady is the senior among all, highly respected by Jackie Chan. She was the only actor that Stephen Chow would not criticize or scold her when filming. This lady is highly respected in the kung fu world. The landlord is a great kung fu man too. He filmed with Bruce Lee before.
omg finally this treasure is getting the recognition it deserves! I saw this in theater on release day and the whole room was laughing. Such a great atmosphere and amazing movie. I personally think it is his best one.
Also the actress for the landlady is a proper screen legend. Her name's Yuen Qiu, she trained in fight choreography and opera under the same master as Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung, and she literally only got a part in this movie by chance: she was accompanying a junior actress to the auditions, had no intent of auditioning herself, but the director recognised her and basically begged her to be in the film.
Sammo Hung is a legend.
actually not recognize her, Stephen chow already has the image of "landlady" and he trying to look for among the interviewees, and when he interviewing Yuen Qiu's junior sister, she was smoking while reading magazine at behind he saw that and says "Yes! this is the landlady i looking for."

1:27 What an insult! "You don't know how to use that." Perfect sibling combination.
The landlord was Bruce Lee's stun double and the landlady is the first asian 007 girl in the 70s. They were taught by the same master in real life.
Still and will always be one of my favorite movies.
Mine too now!!
I feel like anyone who has seen this film MUST have it in their Top 5 All Times... its in mine for sure
Chi Ling Chiu, who played the tailor, was 60 when they made this. He's in his late 70s now and as of a couple of years ago was still preforming in actions movies.
He also teaches Hung Gar Kung Fu in San Fransisco and Hong Kong iirc.
She really beat him with real sandal and it was real. Behind the scene Stephen chow himself said it was hurt that was why he running. That hit was real.
The landlord worked as a double for Bruce Lee in his movie. He is now in his 70 's and is still working as an actor in Hongkong and China.
I absolutely love this movie, easily top 10 movie on my list
If any director want to make a live action anime movie this is the perfect example to refer to
It's funny that you mentioned Bolo Yeung earlier in the vid. He's the actor that plays the World's Top Killer.
No wayyyyyy!! Omg, this has blown me away..thank you for this comment
Movie is always a classic ☯️👏 Great reaction as always man 🤘
My brother Charlie, always supporting..cannot thank you enough ❤️
Saw this in the cinema and just fell about laughing. Loved the Untouchables reference (those who watch the dubbed version miss it).
I was eating pretzels while i was watching this and when the guy got bit by the snakes and his lips swelled up i laughed so hard i spit the pretzels onto the floor, this one was good.
I might have watched this movie more that 100 times. Its that good. Glad u enjoyed
The hero was actually the lost son of the land lord and lady that is why he was so special. They also say that he reminds them of their son.
This was one hell of a comedic movie reaction.! 😂❤️
You legend! Thank you for the love and support as always ❤️
what many doesn't realised is that Stephen Chow is himself a martial artist too.
U must watch “a chinese odyssey” and ‘king of comedy’. Stephen chow is asian comedy king.
Will do mate ❤️
This movie is pure legend status. Shaolin Soccer is next. Really glad you enjoyed this. Shows you guys have great taste
Appreciate the love my brother! Will do ❤️
I second Shao Lin soccer. Not quite as funny but it has some scenes so over the top I about fell out of my chair
That landlady is one of the 007 bond girls back then
One of the funniest movies I've ever seen and the fight scenes are epic 🔥🔥
The "let him do a Bruce Lee impression" thing turned into 20 years of career as Bruce Lee on the big screen XD
The sick choreo is directed by Sammo Hung (Jackie Chan's brother in trainining) in the first half and the stunt director of the matrix in the second half.
The "fairy" kung fu master who hits super hard is a grand master in real life. He has taught both Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. But on screen, he usually just plays a side character/comedic relief for fun. In this case, he wanted to try something "a little different" Lol
The landlord and landlady are both Jackie Chan's brother/sister in training as well. Landlord was Bruce Lee's stunt double, then mostly just played villains/side characters until this movie. The Landlady was a bond girl. She did a bunch of stunt work before kinda fading away from the big screen. Until this movie, where Stephen Chow basically begged her to be the landlady XD
So yea, this movie has a really strong cast. They may not be very well known, but they are the real deal. XD Kinda like the movie's premise: Kung Fu master hiding in everyday life.
This is probably my favorite "martial arts" film of all time.
this movie will still be funny decades and decades from now. stephen chow comedy is funny for all ages and doesn't need to be deep or referential
I am from Hong Kong, love the reaction from you guys haha ! Stephen chow is a LEGEND !!! so happy you guys enjoyed the movie : D
Kung Fu Sweetheart Is a spin off featuring Yuen Wah and Yuen Qiu, and King of Beggars is an excellent Stephen Chow movie.
"What the frog just happened to him?" - Perfect!
Yep. The Last Supper....with this playing in the background...perfect.
Recomended....1.God of cookery. 2.King of Beggars.3.Flirting scholar.4.Justice my foot. 5.Royal Tramp. 6.God of Gambler 2..all Stephen Chow movies
Next : shaolin soccer
Many of the hk movies do have stories and meaning behind, and that usually associated with the history and culture. Good that the kung fu catches your eye, but there are also some key messages behind. Enjoy our movies!
They are actually making Kung Fu Hustle 2 right now, it's one of Stephen Chow's upcoming movies.
its like gta six
This is one of the movie reaction you can watch a hundred times and never get bored. Good job both of you.
Not sure someone already commented about this or you already realized. The landlord and landlady kungfu compliment each other too. Landlord “Taichi” style is soft and passive type of kungfu, while the landlady lion roar is pure strength and hard type. Together they are good balance and like Yin and Yang.
Steven Chow is a Genius.
"Shaolin Soccer" is another... Anime Live Action? It's about Soccer, and you'd like it.
I love it how westerners said they have "powers" like superhero movies. Not in Chinese concept of Kung Fu ... Martial Arts skill to the highest level. Concept we learned from Kung Fu movies and Hong Kong comics books.
2:47 nice catch, he played a bruce lee like character in a prior movie shaolin soccer and later on portrayed bruce lee in the ip-man series.
Best Reaction I've ever seen in this movie yet 🤣First 5 mins of the movie Ash is already Laughing his ass off
Hahaha bro I never laugh this hard since Borat! What a legendary movie..appreciate the love
The funniest film of the past 20 years...and that's while reading subtitles.
this is one of the movies you can rewatch every few years because it's so awesome
I can only think of one movie similar to this, and that is Shaolin Soccer.
There is another movie you can try, its called Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. I remember hating that movie when it first saw it. Ten something happened and i slowed started to love it.
This might be the best reaction to this movie, and I have seen a number of them.
2:59 You caught that the ax was off target. Good notice-mention.-Ernie Moore Jr.
You can watch Shaolin Soccer ⚽.....you will love it 😂😂😂
Will do mate ❤️
The main character is the director, Stephen Chow.
Your comment about this is like an Anime was the first thing that came to my mind when i first saw the movie
that's the power of sound waves. If you powerful enough ,you can destroy everything
Welcome to the party! It is the classic kung-fu parody! Drunken Master and Drunken Master 2 are also funny and well choreographed!
