- The James River Reserve Fleet is an anchorage of the National Defense Reserve Fleet located on the James River at Fort Eustis, Virginia. It is the oldest of the original eight NDRF fleet sites and is currently one of three that is still in operation.

Nice video with interesting information on how these laid up ships are organised in different categories.
When I was station at Ft. Eustis Va back in the late 80's, we trained on this ships. Don't know which one, but it was pretty cool pulling up next to all of this ships.
I spent 5 months there and didnt even realize they were there until I was on my way out
I was at Eustis when this was posted lol
Excellent! We are a Navy family and are always grateful to learn more. And this includes the mothball fleet. (Like these.)
In 1967 I went through the US Army Transportation School at Ft. Eustis, VA. Just one of many classes learning how to operate LCM-8s, LCUs and tug boats. What is shown here is nothing compared to the number of vessels shown here. Many in '67 were Victory Ships left over from WW2. As the 'Nam war heated up they pull another ship out. I spent most of '68 working in the munitions port near Sattahip Thailand. 99% of the ships coming in with bombs and other munitions were Victory ships. Interesting times.
My Dad's ship, the USS Rainier, was originally built during WW2. It was an ammunition supply ship that specialized in underway replenishment of 5" and 8" naval artillery shells. He served on the Rainier during the Korean war and it was also used for several years during the Vietnam war. He was very proud of his service and especially proud that the Rainier continued to serve for so long.
I was there in 89 training aboard quite likely those very same LCUs, Mike boats and tugs. There were many more ships there then. We always referred to it as the "dead fleet". I always wondered what some of the older ones were....liberty ships. So thanks for your service and thanks for the info.
Were you army or navy?
@@winestu5322 I was in the Army - as a draftee. Prior to AIT at Ft Eustis I had no idea that the Army had ships.
After completing 61A10, 61B20, and 61B30 courses over 13 weeks, I was never on another Army boat again.
Why do yo ask?
@@mikeklaene4359 Interesting. MY father was stationed at Fort Eustis in '67. I was born at the Army hospital there. Does a Capt. (later Major) Douglas Brennen ring a bell?
Thank you
Sme of them were used during the first Gulf War to carry equipment to the Middle East.
Joe Pecarro, if you see this I appreciate your work at Suisun from my PGE days. Especially the tour of the Glomar.
I worked at the Philadelphia navy yard. It gets hot and humid in those ships in the summer
I have to say from experience the carriers are the worst because we have to carry supplies and equipment through the ship. It's a long walk and stairwells
all those MARAD red/white/ blue stack ships had great contracts. many guys supported their families on them
This is 2023, how many of these ships would still be at anchor, they look old in the video but I just wonder.
some of these look like extended and heavily modified liberty/victory ships and T2 tankers
not really
At about 3:30 they go by a sub tender. Is that the simon lake? I was on canopus when i was in. Simon lake was our sister ship.
Question, I was stationed aboard USS Platte. I see you have several shots of her along with Monongahela and Merrimack. Is it possible to get some of that footage? I would like to use it, with your permission, in a video of the ship I am working on. I learned this morning PLATTE is no longer in the Ghost Fleet, neither is Merrimack. Both have been sent to LA for dismantling. Thank you
Is it that is so sad bro
ready to serve in 4,5,10, or 20 days.. thats very impressive considering the size of the ships
Not a chance. It would take longer than that just to get a crew together. Most of these ships are just awaiting disposal.
Espetacular, incrível a quantidade de Navios da US Navy em Reserva Naval.
What kind of noise is that ?
Two of the ships I sailed on are there. Albert J Myer and Andrew J. Higgins.
if the engine still work i want to drive that ship
I passed these ships a couple times while traveling around the Chesapeake Bay. It's a strange sight. A little eerie . There area a few places on the bay that you are not allowed near because of bomb ordinances . I really miss the Chesapeake but not for these reasons.
Another interesting thing to see in the lower bay is the Concrete Ships that form the Kiptopeke Beach breakwater.
Interesting
There was a lot more ships there back in the 70s then the government sold a lot of them to some countries to be torn down and some of them that still remains is leaking fuel into the river due to the deterioration of the fuel tanks and the ships hull
I see my ship USNS VANGUARD nested btw those Cimarron class oilers.
I recognized it too! I was a navy kid whose dad was on her when she was home porting from Cape Canaveral in the 80s
Looks like the uss Shenandoah ad-44.. which is now razor blades
If we could turn those ships into new ships. I helped build subs for 43 years. So have been cut up. 😣
You are a legend
I counted ten ships in total, just filmed from different angles ..
At the moment politics being unstable these ships may be needed.
Yes we can round up all the liberals and use them as prison ships
If only they offer transfer with no cost, would like to get at least 3 that has retained propulsion to sail itself to my country's navy... those would be a good platform for afloat forward staging bases
TINY compared to the 70s!
Yeah. This "fleet" is nothing compared to what it used to be. There was a major push to scrap the oldest ships because of maintenance cost and environmental concerns.
What music is that? Is it public domain (can I use it?).
it is not.
It's interesting how some of those ships are anchored so close together, it looks like they are only inches apart, while others are spread really far apart. You would think they would anchor all of them closer together so they wouldn't take up so much room.
If you had a fleet of ships, would you jam them all together? Even though this fleet is inactive, that doesn't mean it isn't one.

The ones parked close to one another are roped together. This is called rafting. The rafts and single ships are anchored with enough room to allow them to swing with the tides and winds without colliding.
It appears than many of the boats of the Ghost fleet that I observed 20 years ago are no longer there which would account for your observation.
Could some of the larger ships not be turned into a ship that is full of cots to sleep in and a large galley and dining area. It could then follow troops who are deployed to any port in the world and be a safe place to feed and bed down troops who are deployed but off dty ? Also it could go to places like Haiti when there is a crisis like now because of the storm and people could bed down till the storm passes. These bvig hulks when anchored properly are storm proof are they not?
They are hulks, no longer fit for human habitation. You would be better off fixing up an abandoned prison At least that wouldn't sink.
Man they ain't gonna use these old tubs besides they ain't got no crews to work em !!
put them to good use give them to the Philippines put them in the spratly islands Philippine crews , the Chinese wouldn't know what to do 1000 ships scattered around the area with basic rocket air defence systems
Brilliant idea for the PHILIPINES!!!!!!!
These are hulks that would have to be towed half way around the world. Doubt many of them would survive the trip.
probably but i bet it would confuse the chinese loll
no need for that. No matter how they try to tease the Philippines China still wouldn't be that stupid to go over the border.
The Philippines couldn't afford to operate them.
Me and friend went fishing on his boat and we parked between the ships then we got busted by the va.marine police and some security police was told we couldnt be anywhere close to the ships
why is embedding disabled?
because I only post it here. I don't want it embedded anywhere. Links are OK.
word. can't argue with that. great footage!
Should of kept them especially the aircraft carriers since war is soon
An aircraft carrier from that era would not be useable because it would not be able to support modern aircraft. And that is if the machinery were intact and functional.
Wtf is this on my homepage?
Needs a Voiced Narration, and softer musical background.
Thanks for your criticism
I like sea turtles.
they are rather tasty
@2:06 I served on this ship.
Seriously, do u wanna go see it
should have reuse some happen war will come future.
seeing all this ship abandoned, really sad, how can human be so wasteful, if u dont want the those ship, give it to me, i will gladly accept them
Most of them are out there for storage until reused or scrapped
But it definitely is sad to see such beautiful ships in working order begging to get back to battle
+Payton Pocha ya I agree man, sad, very sad, I feel like just go there and hijack a ship for myself
+Shana Fh yea but so much fuel to power it lol
+Payton Pocha ikr
