I love mastodon! Are they considered death metal though? I thought they were more sludge / prog rock / prog metal/ heavy metal - even their older stuff. Either way love them! I’d be curious on your thoughts of The Faceless albums “Autotheism” and “In Becoming A Ghost” Technical death metal with some great clean vocals. Would be interested to see if you’d like them based on this list you’ve given! Also Slugdge! A whole progressive metal band dedicated to slugs! 💖💖💖
Gorefest is by far my fav Death Metal band. Their early stuff is good, then they moved away from the typical Death and started blending 70's influences (Thin Lizzy,...), then went for a more rock 'n' roll approach on Chapter 13. Their last 2 albums are back to Death Metal and they're sooooooo brutal and heavy. Amazing band. Ed Warby on Drums is a monster! I actually saw them open for Deep Purple around 1998 (what a weird pairing!), and this ended up being their last show before their first break-up. Besides them, I like the obvious ones (Morbid Angel, Death, Opeth, Deicide...). Cheers.
I temporarily lost interest in metal after the late 80s thrash boom. And ever since coming back, I’ve been attracted to the more extreme genres of metal, but I struggle to embrace them for various reasons. I’m hoping you eventually make that follow up video, I’d love to hear your experience and take on it .
Good choices. I like your picks and appreciate your honesty. I love Death and Morbid Angel. My Top 5 in no order. Pungent Stench Carcass Suffocation Deceased Fulci
Carcass and Pungent Stench would be considered grindcore. Even though Carcass deviated from that Pungent Stench stayed fairly consistent. Great bands though, great choices nonetheless.
I also am not huge into Death Metal, but i love a few albums from Cannibal Corpse, Vader, Decapitated, Death, Morbid Angel and newer band Creeping Death.
Thanks for sharing great bands overall. My favorites right now are: Cattle Decapitation Archspire (I know they get a lot of hate 😂) The Faceless (I know they also get a lot of hate) Inferi Slaughterbox
Death metal only recently really clicked for me but now in the last year or two, I can't get enough of it and have been ravenously going back and delving into the discographies of a ton of bands. I think I prefer a different set of bands mostly; when I crave death metal, I want stuff that's relentlessly overpowering and sounds impossibly vicious and scary and evil. My top 5 at the moment would be: 1) Nile 2) Cannibal Corpse 3) Vader 4) Autopsy 5) Blood Incantation I could see you digging Blood Incantation's "Hidden History of the Human Race" as it has a kinda prog/psych element though still brutal. Current fave new death metal album of 2024 for me is Vitriol "Suffer & Become." What a blast furnace of a record. Mastodon rule (finally saw them live last year with Gojira), but I have never seen them referred to as death metal, even in their early days. I looked at the Wiki for them: "Mastodon has been described as progressive metal, alternative metal, sludge metal, stoner metal, psychedelic metal, experimental metal, and groove metal." Well cool band to highlight anyway. I respect Death and enjoy them; they were one of the only death metal bands I used to be familiar with along with Morbid Angel and Possessed. I remember giving their first couple of LPs good reviews in "Faces" when they came out. But I never loved them and I keep trying and something doesn't totally click for me. Maybe the vocals? They aren't vicious enough for me and have too much reverb or something.
I can not mention 5 albums or bands, I do not like the genre that much. I am dying to hear your episode on your appreciation of, or problems with, death metal. Opeths Blackwater Park I love to death (ahem) but do not consider them Death Metal, more gothic inspired progmetal. Death is a great band, although the vocals are an acquired taste. Bolt Thrower is sometimes ok but to my ears too repetitive.
Great bands. Except I don't like Mastodon. Have you ever listened to Deceased? I think you would like them. They have a ton of melodic traditional Metal sound mixed in with interesting songs structure and Classic Horror lyrics. My top 5 DM: Cannibal Corpse Nile Morbid Angel Mortician Suffocation
@@LairoftheAlchemist Thank you for the reply John, Same here:) in fact I am not a DM fan at all, never was. I do however like some Mastodon, to my ears they were never DM.
It is. He's also been here discussing Black Sabbath with John and I. Incantation are outstanding. If you want to hear proper death metal that's a great place to start.
Hmmm.... 1. Autopsy 2. Dismember 3. Immolation 4. Incantation 5. Bolt Thrower All of the bands above have consistently committed to the genre, with the exception of Bolt Thrower, who sadly are no more - but so great, they must be included! Mastodon isn't death metal. So, that's an interesting choice. Behemoth is more black metal (hence the corpse paint) just saw them in September. Meh.... Opeth started out sort of blackened death and is now progressive metal. Death is an obvious choice but Chuck also moved away from death metal and went more traditional/progressive metal. Morbid Angel are pretty much utter garbage now, but the first three albums are great.....after that, meh. Autopsy are the death metal Gods! Honorable mention to Obituary who, while cheesy, have remained fairly consistent through the years.
Mastodon is not, has never been and will never be Death Metal. What are you even basing that on? In their early more brutal days they were a Sludge Metal band, literally no Death Metal in there sound, Prog and bits of Mathcore sure but no Death Metal. Maybe your confused because Georgia Sludge Metal is more uptempo and aggressive than other Sludge. Either way they're definitely not Death Metal. Also Opeth even in the early days were still always a Prog Metal band, they had Death Metal influence definitely but I would never call them a Death Metal band.
I love Death Metal, but I understand what you say about hooks. Doesn't matter what genre you play you need hooks. That's why I also love bands like Obituary, Entombed, Carcass, Bolt Thrower, Unleashed, and Benediction. Those are bands that still understood the value of bringing memorability to their songs. Entombed probably being the best example of a band that grew out of their death metal limitations by the third album and went in the death n roll direction. I'm not a purist, so I loved everything that Entombed, and Entombed A.D. released.
@@LairoftheAlchemist He's one of the main owners of the Hell's Headbanger's record label. He has become a meme in the metal community. Always calling people "Posers!" on RUclips.
The only death metal band i can tolerate is the band death. For me the others are only noise, i can't stand that grumbling vocals that u can't understand a word (why even bother writing lyrics for that). Another thing i hate about the genre is all the blasphemous hate of God. Most of it is rubbish in my opinion.
You might be interested in technical deathmetal with clean vocals then like the faceless (their most recent albums) and Black crown initiate. Possibly even Entheos 💖

I like Entombed: DCLXVI: To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth if that counts, otherwise i don´t like growl at all.

Well…like I mentioned, I don’t go deep with this stuff, early Mastodon sounds like DM to me but I’m not a scholar on the topic.
