As a hotel front desk worker, I can say depending on how long I’ve been on shift, I don’t need to necessarily check availability in front of the guest because 9/10 I’ve been habitually checking all of that since I first came in. In my experience, upgrades are contingent upon two things-overbookings and recompense for inconveniences or mistakes such as you finding out your room hasn’t been properly cleaned/you receive poor service. Usually, if I get a person who requests an upgrade upon check in, I will try to find them the best room available that’s basically the same as/close enough price to what they were set to pay, and put them in there. But it’s technically not a dramatic upgrade. And if there is a rare occasion where I do have an actual upgrade available, it’s first come, first serve so if another guest requests it first, they get it.
All of that being said, I think he was lying to you about busy season because it was the easiest explanation he could come up with on the fly. What he should have done was be honest and offer you whatever he could. As a hospitality worker, you should always prioritize giving the guest what you can, and making it known what you CAN do as opposed to just telling them you can’t. It’s sad just how far the standard of basic customer service has fallen. That doesn’t mean the guest will always get what they want, but at the very least they deserve to be treated like just that-a guest.
