I am teaching this lesson tomorrow and I have so loved reading through Esther this week. SO many things we can learn from how Esther responded to her circumstances. I think the thing that really stood out to me this week was, in light of the quarterly topic of missions, how both Esther and Daniel were respectful of the culture they were in. Daniel did not DEMAND that he be served special "kosher" foods. Esther did not get an attitude with the eunuch abotu who she would not touch the "unclean" food. They simply explained the situation to the ones that were "need to know" and in both cases they found favor. Esther was even given favor with the eunuch to the point where he gave her better accommodations. One thing that is not really expounded upon in the lesson was that Haman was an Agagite and what that meant. His people were to be annihilated by King Saul way back in 1 Sam 17 (I was actually jsut studying this in the last few weeks). In teh movie, One Night With The King, i ti shinted that Agag's wife (who was with child) escaped and tha tis the line Haman came from. I'm not sure if that was exactly true. But for him to exist, SOMEONE from that group of people had to have escapes and likely carried that hatred for the Jews in their heart. Now we know from reading in 1 Sam 17 that Saul only killed most of the people, and kept the king and some choice animals as plunder. The prophet Samuel himself finished off Agag and informed Saul that he would be losing his kingdom. So flash forward, Mordecai would have known about Agag, and probably knew there were still people from that family line walking on the earth. He would have known that Haman woudl know the story and woudl have a hatred of Jews. But, there is a time limit, and a space limit in the book, so I guess it is what it is. But importan tto understand that kernel to see why Haman would be hating on the Jews so much.

Also, even though the name God or Lord was not mentioned in the book, I believe Mordecai and Esther were constantly in prayer mentioning their God.
Its so important as Christians in whatever situation or circumstance we find ourselves in, to always remember what God's mission is for even in difficult situations. So its important to stand firm for God and he will guide us be our refuge in times of trouble.

We should remember that Mordecai was among the royal captive like Daniel and no doubt he raised her with those royal graces which, no doubt, she evinced in her encounter with the King. This story shows that there is nothing called coincidence, all is orchestred by God. His name is very absent, but His works are ever present.
