‘Why do I feel shitty about myself’ This man. I spent my entire childhood with the feeling in the pit of my stomach in ‘fancy’ places that said ‘you shouldn’t be here. You haven’t earned the right to be here. You’re bad for being here.’ Like I literally didn’t deserve good things, because I was poor. And Everything had guilt attached to it. Birthdays. Christmas. Just needing lunch money for school had guilt attached. And our history books don’t explain ANY of it. We spend 13 years in school and still don’t understand ourselves in relation to anything we have been taught about the world. Knowing why I was poor would have helped me I think, on some emotional level.
Thank you, friends. Great talk. I thought I'd share some of my mind for comrades who comb this comment section and may find some food for thought. I revisit this episode every now and then. I've always been uncomfortable with, I always forget his name, the british man's insistence on the spiritual mission of Marxism. Any who've studied theory would, I think, immediately recognize the nature of my hesitation with such claims. Beautiful and poetic, but nonetheless idealist.. But my mind has changed over time. Not that i believe that idealism should slip its way into materialist analysis, nothing like that. I've just realized and recognized how pivotal a role religious ideals have played in REAL CONDITIONS, mobilizing the revolutionary masses in so many countries. Now, i began my journey towards Marxism by deconstructing my religious faith FIRST. Broader culture and political-economy followed, but I started with ruthlessly criticizing the Christian ethos I was brought up with in my little midsouthern-US town. What I've learned to do over years of question and study SINCE coming to dialectical materialism, however, is to differentiate between institutional and organic religiosity, as well as between the material interests of each. Organic, religious sentiments are so often grounded in community, acceptance, charity, real empathy and real cooperation. I don't think we will achieve broad atheism/agnosticism before we initiate a global socialist transition. And i dont think we have to. So long as analysis & strategy is grounded in materialism, so long as the goal of a society free from class exploitation is shared among groups, I think people should conceptualize the values behind that mission however fits best for them. I don't need a religious image to make sense of the world. But it would be chauvinistic to impose that on others - like I said, so long as analysis and action is grounded in materialism, organic religion (we can just call that spirituality, hm?) can be very useful for connecting socialist values with local community values. It's one thing to compromise with liberal reformists, fascists or religious zealots, etc. It's another to meet the common people where they're at, and to help them understand what it is we're doing in whatever terms best suit that situation. The conversations we have with an American Protestant, an Indian Hindu, or a Latin American Catholic, they will be different conversations, necessarily. Adapting Marxism TO a religious ideology is dangerous. But connecting the religious values people already have to Marxist methodology is useful, if not necessary. I mean, what, are we just going to ignore or subvert the countless millions who wont (and dont have to) give up their religion but nonetheless yearn for revolution? Thats a sure-fire way to bolster the ranks of the reactionary.. and as a side note, how tf do we explain to sincere, principled anarchists that the proletarian state is qualitatively different from states hitherto?? (assuming its actually created, as the USSR failed to do, ultimately, tragically) And that doesn't necessitate a condemnation of Marxism-Leninism, my principled comrades, it requires a material analysis of what went wrong, how context may differ today, and how we can understand and update our broader revolutionary theory. On that note, at the end of the day, in good faith, i think MLs, MLMs, these types of tendencies, we should put in A LOT more effort expanding our conversations with anarchists - we may not yet agree about state, no state, whatever, but we both KNOW that there are countless other arenas of struggle. What can we MLs do to work with anarchists on building parallel power, creating channels of support, of attack and defense against capital that exist OUTSIDE the state? Mutual aid, alternative business models, labor organizations, and so on? A principled anarchist can only accept a hierarchy that is justly democratic. I think their input and critique of attempts at socialistic organization is invaluable, when it's done in good faith. Alright, done thinking out loud. ¡Viva la revolución!
Im so desperate to be at that table and, while im still learning and cant provide any meaningful analysis lol, i would be honored to contribute to the laugh track with comrades! =)
At 58:00, I feel compelled to say a thing- This isn't precisely relevant to the video, but I think it's still important to note; a quote by Angela Saini: "For those with an ideology to sell, the 'science' simply serves to project themselves as scholarly and objective."
Proles won't load on patreon, won't even show, and won't download on the podcast apps even though it shows all the episodes. I'm guessing maybe they stopped doing it, but does anyone know how I can get these? I'm really interested in so many of them and it would be a shame for all of that material to go to waste.
Effective Post Scarcity of a resource is only true in a realistic sense when resources literally cannot be hoarded. (Like oxygen at sea level for people with functioning lungs; there are no rations for it, there are no markets for it, no jubilees needed, no one needs to work to get it, it’s there in abundance in its natural state. Because if they can be you can bet your life that there will be a person or a faction who is pulling all the dirty tricks in the book hoard it. The Left needs to harness technology to make materials, water, energy, land, intellectual and physical labour effectively post scarce (literally un-hoardable). As that happens much political nonsense would subside and we’d only be left with out pesky instincts to deal with, which tech can help with as well.
Is PRT only available on patreon? I've found it both on Google and Castbox and can see all the episodes, but on both apps it won't allow playback or download of any episodes. Don't know how to find them on any other media sites
Proles pod itself has shut down. It was a whole debacle. It was very sad, it was about a year ago. I don't know if the website is still maintained but the Patreon is shut down.
This was one of the most enlightening episodes discussing HM I’ve ever heard and it’s equally disappointing to hear about Hayden. Nonetheless, I’m a fan of the show.
