Compare what former Prime Minister, Sir John Major, said about Brexit, with what the current Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, and likely next month’s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, said in the Sky TV leaders’ debate last night (Wednesday).
Well, Sunak and Starmer said nothing about Brexit. That’s right, nothing.
But Sir John has a lot to say about Brexit. He thinks it’s a “colossal mistake”.
We should be back in the EU to keep Britain safe, Sir John told a Parliamentary committee in February last year.
“There are three great power blocs in the world today,” he said. “The United Kingdom is not one of them.”
He spelt it out. “There’s America, there’s China, and there’s the European Union.”
Sir John continued, “Europe is going to face immense competition from both America and China.
“It may face military and security problems with China.
“Is Europe better able to represent its people with the United Kingdom inside the European Union, making it stronger, or outside making it weaker?”
The former Prime Minister’s answer was clear. “I think not just us, but the whole of Europe is stronger with Britain in it.
“And when I look at the interests of my children and grandchildren, I think their future is brighter if they are part of a really big bloc who could work with us if we were in difficulty.”
    He added:
“In a challenging economic world, and potentially difficult political world, how much safer we are in a large bloc than alone, and how much more secure we would be, in times of difficulty, with friends we can hug closely rather than people who may be less willing to come to the aid in difficulties of a country that stands entirely alone.”
    Sir John concluded:
“Those are matters that are important for this generation and future generations, and I don’t think they were given the weight they deserved in the referendum.”

Very true. We used to have an empire and in WWI and WWII we relied on our empire to support us because we were all part of a group, the British Empire. Without the empire and links this country would be speaking a very different language. That empire dissolved but in a nutshell, without having LINKS (like the British Empire or the European Union) we stand alone and have not enough muscle to compete with the likes of China or Russia. MY REPLY: Brexit was never worth a try. You could try jumping off a cliff, just to see how you fare, but I would not recommend it.
The road back to the EU, if it ever happens, will be long and painful. It starts with knowledge. Millions across the country have little idea why the EU was started, what it does, and why it benefits most countries of Europe. We need a massive high profile national awareness campaign, but unfortunately one has not been launched, either before or after the referendum.
Knowledge is the best defence, and attack, against the nonsense of Brexit. And, over time, experience of living with Brexit will inform the public at large that leaving the EU was an enormous gamble and mistake, which has not, and cannot, pay off.

      - introducing subsidiarity which is totally absent in England even not affording an own Parliament ....

@@paologat late 2060's IF you start convergence now. Which I don't think you will. I don't think the UK will ever be back in the EU. In fact, I think the UK will dissolve before that. An independent Scotland may have a chance to rejoin the EU if they so wish... Northern Ireland can again become part of the EU overnight if they choose to unite the isle. As for England... I'm sorry to say, it has become somewhat of a "persona non grata" on the Continent. They are viewed as petulant, arrogant, self-centered, short-sighted, dimwitted buffoons with a thoroughly unjustified and rather quite pathetic sense of exceptionalism. No sane person would welcome back into the club a former member that has those characteristics. And Wales... well, Wales just proved that they're England's pet dog, so they're not worthy of anything. Better just be annexed into England and end their misery altogether. So no, I don't think you'll be joining any time soon. Not with the current path of things. We simply don't want you back. Unless something earth-shattering happens (like a World War or something like that) I don't see a way for England to creep itself back into the EU. Good bye and, quite frankly, good riddance.

To re-join the EU would mean, at the very least, the acceptance of the Euro as our currency and of Schengen. While I have no problem whatsoever with that, I doubt a majority would, so that will be the major stumbling block. I do believe we will re-join at some point, but I’m nearly 70 and I don’t believe it will happen in my lifetime. My generation (the ‘boomer’ Brexit lovers) has to die out first. We also have to reckon with the fact that mainland Europe is heading right politically while the UK seems to be going in the opposite direction. Right now, it might be best to put some political distance between the EU and the UK.

No, it is not true that John Major promised the country a referendum on the Maastricht Treaty. During his time as Prime Minister, John Major did not propose a national referendum on the Maastricht Treaty, which was a significant agreement that furthered European integration by establishing the European Union and the euro. Instead, he focused on securing parliamentary approval for the treaty.
The Maastricht Treaty faced considerable opposition within the Conservative Party and from other political groups in the UK. To navigate this opposition, Major's government employed a strategy of linking votes on the treaty to votes of confidence in his government. This tactic aimed to ensure that Conservative MPs, even those skeptical of the treaty, would support it to avoid bringing down the government. Despite the significant controversy and internal party conflict, Major succeeded in securing the passage of the Maastricht Treaty through Parliament without resorting to a public referendum.

To all those who would wish to remain in the EU, your plight is easily resolved: feel free to go and live in any one of the EU member states where you will be able to "enjoy the benefits" (whatever they are) of life inside the EU to your heart's content. The EU as it is now, is a very different beast to the organisation that the UK joined back in the early seventies - and it's very debatable as to whether it's an improved Iteration on the original model. When the UK was in the EU it frequently found itself at odds with the other member states on most matters and was routinely outvoted, even though it was a net contributor to the organisation's finances. In other words it was paying huge amounts to do as it was told by the rest of the EU even though it wasn't necessarily in the UK interests. An independent UK making decisions in its own interests is the way forward. We managed to do it for hundreds of years prior to joining, and I'm sure we can do it now we're out.

We were called ‘Treasure Island’ by Germany and others, so I’m not convinced they were fully aligned with British interests. Our influence was diluted and becoming more so the more countries joined. I liked the concept of a Common Market, but that was always the first step to becoming a political union unfortunately, which leads people to become less & less engaged because their votes become less & less effective, and in the case of the EU they are essentially worthless as the EU Parliament does not generate legislation, so people’s votes can’t really affect that. I’d sooner be less wealthy but able to make our own decisions and mistakes.
